    A PDE-constrained optimization formulation for discrete fracture network flows

    We investigate a new numerical approach for the computation of the 3D flow in a discrete fracture network that does not require a conforming discretization of partial differential equations on complex 3D systems of planar fractures. The discretization within each fracture is performed independently of the discretization of the other fractures and of their intersections. Independent meshing process within each fracture is a very important issue for practical large scale simulations making easier mesh generation. Some numerical simulations are given to show the viability of the method. The resulting approach can be naturally parallelized for dealing with systems with a huge number of fractures

    Correlated Emission of Hadrons from Recombination of Correlated Partons

    We discuss different sources of hadron correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We show that correlations among partons in a quasi-thermal medium can lead to the correlated emission of hadrons by quark recombination and argue that this mechanism offers a plausible explanation for the dihadron correlations in the few GeV/c momentum range observed in Au+Au collisions at RHIC.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; v2: typo on p.4 correcte

    Coupled multiphysics modeling of aortic dissection

    Computational modeling of the cardiovascular system plays an increasingly important role in biomedicine, as it allows for non-invasive investigations of the status-quo and studying the influence of different treatment options available. The goal is to incorporate patient-specific datasets to obtain socalled digital twins to increase relevance of virtual surgery and support clinical decision making. In this context, aortic dissection is particularly challenging, since the overall system behavior strongly depends on the interplay between tissue deformation and blood flow, giving rise to a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction problem. To account for the complex physics, several additional modeling aspects such as prestress, advanced constitutive models respecting fibre orientation and suitable boundary conditions for the fluid and solid phases have to be considered. Within this study, these special techniques are applied to a patient-specific dataset, for which first results are presented highlighting their relevance

    Jet Fragmentation via Recombination of Parton Showers

    We study hadron production in jets by applying quark recombination to jet shower partons. With the jet showers obtained from PYTHIA and augmented by additional non-perturbative effects, we compute hadron spectra in e+ + e-collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV. Including contributions from resonance decays, we find that the resulting transverse momentum spectra for pions, kaons, and protons reproduce reasonably those from the string fragmentation as implemented in PYTHIA.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, contribution to Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions 201
