Microstructural characterization of laser sintered synthetic calcium phosphate-natural dentine interface for the restoration of enamel surface
Tooth sensitivity is a common occurrence and it is caused by acid induced erosion of enamel surface. In this investigation we report the results of calcium phosphate based minerals which are irradiated with lasers ex vivo for the analysis of photo activated densification of minerals. The photo-activation in these minerals may primarily arise from the absorption centres, namely OH- and rare-earth (RE)3+ ion dopants (e.g. Er3 ions) incorporated during synthesis. The loss of hydroxyl group from mineral is characterized using the thermogravimetric technique. The microstructural changes under the conditions of continuous wave (CW) and pulsed laser irradiation are reported together with the measured temperature rise. The preliminary data on surface hardness of occluded dentine with photo-activated calcium phosphate minerals are also reported, for aiming an eventual hardness value of 3300 MPa which is known for natural enamels

We study the consequences of the existence of spacelike Ricci inheritance
vectors (SpRIVs) parallel to for model of string cloud and string fluid
stress tensor in the context of general relativity. Necessary and sufficient
conditions are derived for a spacetime with a model of string cloud and string
fluid stress tensor to admit a SpRIV and a SpRIV which is also a spacelike

Utilization of bedside ultrasound in the diagnosis and management of massive pulmonary embolism: a case report
AbstractThe prompt diagnosis and treatment of massive pulmonary embolism is a well-known challenge for physicians. We report a case of a 61-year-old hemodynamically unstable man who presented to the emergency department with complaints of acute dyspnea. After performing a focused history and physical, we used bedside ultrasound to diagnose significant right heart strain, which suggested massive bilateral pulmonary embolisms. This diagnosis was further supported by the visualization of deep venous thrombosis in the left lower extremity. The patient was treated with IV tissue plasminogen activator in the emergency department and survived to discharge in his usual state of health
An auxin-inducible, GAL4-compatible, gene expression system for Drosophila
The ability to control transgene expression, both spatially and temporally, is essential for studying model organisms. In Drosophila, spatial control is primarily provided by the GAL4/UAS system, whilst temporal control relies on a temperature-sensitive GAL80 (which inhibits GAL4) and drug-inducible systems. However, these are not ideal. Shifting temperature can impact on many physiological and behavioural traits, and the current drug-inducible systems are either leaky, toxic, incompatible with existing GAL4-driver lines, or do not generate effective levels of expression. Here, we describe the auxin-inducible gene expression system (AGES). AGES relies on the auxin-dependent degradation of a ubiquitously expressed GAL80, and therefore, is compatible with existing GAL4-driver lines. Water-soluble auxin is added to fly food at a low, non-lethal, concentration, which induces expression comparable to uninhibited GAL4 expression. The system works in both larvae and adults, providing a stringent, non-lethal, cost-effective, and convenient method for temporally controlling GAL4 activity in Drosophila

A solar flare type increase in cosmic rays at low latitudes
During the hour following the big solar flare on 23-2-1956, an average increase of +5.7 ± 0.8% has been observed in meson intensity measured with standard telescopes at Ahmedabad, Kodaikanal and Trivandrum. This is the first report of a significant solar flare type increase in cosmic rays near the geomagnetic equator. If the increase is due to solar protons travelling in approximately direct paths, the energy of the protous must extend from about 35-67.5 Bev. It is estimated that the average flux of such protons is approximately equal to 1.5 times the flux of general cosmic ray intensity in the same energy range. During the hour, the sun is estimated to have emitted more than 1028 protons of about 50 Bev energy

Familial Aggregation of Vibrio cholerae-associated Infection in Matlab, Bangladesh
Vibrio cholerae is a major cause of diarrhoeal illness in endemic regions, such as Bangladesh. Understanding the factors that determine an individual's susceptibility to infection due to V. cholerae may lead to improved prevention and control strategies. Increasing evidence suggests that human genetic factors affect the severity of V. cholerae-associated infection. This study, therefore, sought to characterize the heritable component of susceptibility to infection due to V. cholerae using the Matlab Health and Demographic Surveillance System database of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh. In total, 144 pedigrees that included a cholera patient and 341 pedigrees without a cholera patient were evaluated during 1 January–31 December 1992. The odds of the sibling of a patient being admitted with cholera were 7.67 times the odds of the sibling of an unaffected individual being admitted with cholera [95% confidence interval (CI) 2.40–24.5, p<0.001], after adjustment for gender, age, socioeconomic status, and hygiene practices. Although exposure to environmental reservoirs is essential in the epidemiology of cholera, household-specific factors, such as familial relatedness to an index case, may also be important determinants of risk of cholera. Further analysis of human genetic factors that contribute to susceptibility to cholera may be productive
