    The Objectivity of Ordinary Life

    Metaethics tends to take for granted a bare Democritean world of atoms and the void, and then worry about how the human world that we all know can possibly be related to it or justified in its terms. I draw on Wittgenstein to show how completely upside-down this picture is, and make some moves towards turning it the right way up again. There may be a use for something like the bare-Democritean model in some of the sciences, but the picture has no standing as the basic objective truth about the world; if anything has that standing, it is ordinary life. I conclude with some thoughts about how the notion of bare, “thin” perception of non-evaluative reality feeds a number of philosophical pathologies, such as behaviourism, and show how a “thicker”, more value-laden, understanding of our perceptions of the world can be therapeutic against them

    Improved approximation of phase-space densities on triangulated domains using Discrete Flow Mapping with p-refinement

    We consider the approximation of the phase-space flow of a dynamical system on a triangulated surface using an approach known as Discrete Flow Mapping. Such flows are of interest throughout statistical mechanics, but the focus here is on flows arising from ray tracing approximations of linear wave equations. An orthogonal polynomial basis approximation of the phase-space density is applied in both the position and direction coordinates, in contrast with previous studies where piecewise constant functions have typically been applied for the spatial approximation. In order to improve the tractability of an orthogonal polynomial approximation in both phase-space coordinates, we propose a careful strategy for computing the propagation operator. For the favourable case of a Legendre polynomial basis we show that the integrals in the definition of the propagation operator may be evaluated analytically with respect to position and via a spectrally convergent quadrature rule for the direction coordinate. A generally applicable spectral quadrature scheme for integration with respect to both coordinates is also detailed for completeness. Finally, we provide numerical results that motivate the use of p-refinement in the orthogonal polynomial basis

    A multispecies model for the transmission and control of mastitis in dairy cows

    Mastitis in dairy cows is a significant economic and animal welfare issue in the dairy industry. The bacterial pathogens responsible for infection of the mammary gland may be split into two main categories: major and minor pathogens. Infection with major pathogens generally results in clinical illness or strong inflammatory responses and reduced milk yields, whereas minor pathogen infection is usually subclinical. Previous investigations have considered the transmission of these pathogens independently. Experimental evidence has shown cross-protection between species of pathogens. In this study a mathematical model for the coupled transmission of major and minor pathogens along with their interaction via the host was developed in order to consider various methods for controlling the incidence of major pathogen infection. A stability analysis of the model equilibria provides explanations for observed phenomena and previous decoupled modelling results. This multispecies model structure has provided a basis for quantifying the extent of cross-protection between species and assessing possible control strategies against the disease

    San Jacinto Intrusive Complex: 2. Geochemistry

    Rocks from three large (>100^2 km) tonalitic intrusions exposed in the San Jacinto Mountains of southern California show a restricted compositional range of between 63 and 68 wt % SiO_2 for all but volumetrically minor felsic differentiates (with Si0_2≈70 wt %). All rocks with less than 65.5 wt % SiO_2 show linear element-element covariation. Felsic differentiates have characteristics (higher SiO_2, K_2O, Rb, Ba, U; higher and variable rare earth elements) consistent with derivation by in situ fractionation; rocks with between 65.5 and 70 wt % SiO_2 have intermediate characteristics and are interpreted as derived from liquids formed by mixing “primitive” liquids with fractionated liquids within an intermittently recharged, continuously solidifying magma chamber. Mafic inclusions extend the compositional trends of the mafic tonalites to 55 wt % SiO_2. The chemical variations of both inclusions and more mafic tonalites are interpreted as resulting from processes acting before injection of their parental liquids into the observed crustal magma chambers. Effects of chamber processes are minor for all but the most felsic rocks. The major effect of recharge is to buffer the thermal and chemical properties of liquids within the magma chambers, yielding large volumes of relatively homogeneous tonalite. For those elements where the bulk distribution coefficient is between about 0.5 and 2, concurrent recharge and solidification produces rocks that closely approximate the composition of the added liquids. Estimated Rayleigh numbers for these liquids are high (>10^(10)), implying convection throughout much of the solidification history of each chamber. Existence of trace element variations within analyzed rocks imply that convection was not totally efficient at homogenizing the various batches of liquid added to each chamber

    Petrological and geochemical investigations at the Cajon Pass Deep Drillhole

    Chemical analyses of cores from the Cajon Pass Deep Drillhole confirm vertical lithologic diversity of the basement rocks. They are metaluminous and calcalkaline; weak major element correlations with wide-ranging SiO_2 suggest they are not a simple cogenetic suite. Quartz contents correlate with the thermal gradient profile, supporting conduction as the principal thermal transport mechanism. Abundances of heat producing elements are variable and somewhat lower than average crustal values. Cross-calibration with other measures of Th, U and K are underway. Ages of surface granitoids and core 17 are late Cretaceous; other plutonic rocks appear older but late Mesozoic. Initial lead isotopic signatures of the plutonic rocks change dramatically with depth in the hole
