Pluripotential Theory and Convex Bodies: A Siciak-Zaharjuta theorem

We work in the setting of weighted pluripotential theory arising from polynomials associated to a convex body PP in (R+)d({\bf R}^+)^d. We define the {\it logarithmic indicator function} on Cd{\bf C}^d: HP(z):=supJPlogzJ:=supJPlog[z1j1zdjd]H_P(z):=\sup_{ J\in P} \log |z^{ J}|:=\sup_{ J\in P} \log[|z_1|^{ j_1}\cdots |z_d|^{ j_d}] and an associated class of plurisubharmonic (psh) functions: LP:={uPSH(Cd):u(z)HP(z)=0(1), z}.L_P:=\{u\in PSH({\bf C}^d): u(z)- H_P(z) =0(1), \ |z| \to \infty \}. We first show that LPL_P is not closed under standard smoothing operations. However, utilizing a continuous regularization due to Ferrier which preserves LPL_P, we prove a general Siciak-Zaharjuta type-result in our PP-setting: the weighted PP-extremal function VP,K,Q(z):=sup{u(z):uLP, uQ on K}V_{P,K,Q}(z):=\sup \{u(z):u\in L_P, \ u\leq Q \ \hbox{on} \ K\} associated to a compact set KK and an admissible weight QQ on KK can be obtained using the subclass of LPL_P arising from functions of the form 1degP(p)logp\frac{1}{deg_P(p)}\log |p| (appropriately normalized)

The purpose of this paper is to present an artificial neural network (ANN) based method for the estimation of company success during economic crisis periods. There are a number of studies about recovering the crisis successfully by companies. Success or failure interpretation can be made upon financial indicators of companies for the period before the crisis. These indicators also provide estimation about the success of the companies. In this study, an ANN model is proposed estimating the success of companies after crisis period by means of financial indicators of the companies for the year before 2001 economic crisis of Turkey. A prototype model is designed with regards to homogeneous data set retrieved from the companies facilitating in manufacturing sector

The main purpose of this study is to examine possible relationships between resilience, tenacity and motivation of physical education teacher candidates. In addition, resilience, tenacity and motivation levels were examined according to class and gender levels. Participants of the study are 154 PE students in Ağrı province. There are 50 female participants and 104 male students. The Resilience Scale adapted to Turkish by Sarıçam et al. (2012). The Tenacity Scale-Short Form adapted to Turkish by Sarıçam et al. (2016) Stability Scale and Personal Information Form were used. To analyze the data, t test, ANOVA, Pearson moment product correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were used. 99% p <.01 was taken as confidence interval in the study. According to research findings, there are statistically significant relationships in positive direction among the resilience, tenacity and motivation in the candidates of physical education teachers. When the resilience increases, tenacity and motivation levels also increase. According to gender and class level, resilience, tenacity and motivational stability do not differ statistically. The study can be expanded by adding different sections and classes

Pricing Options in Incomplete Equity Markets via the Instantaneous Sharpe Ratio

We use a continuous version of the standard deviation premium principle for pricing in incomplete equity markets by assuming that the investor issuing an unhedgeable derivative security requires compensation for this risk in the form of a pre-specified instantaneous Sharpe ratio. First, we apply our method to price options on non-traded assets for which there is a traded asset that is correlated to the non-traded asset. Our main contribution to this particular problem is to show that our seller/buyer prices are the upper/lower good deal bounds of Cochrane and Sa\'{a}-Requejo (2000) and of Bj\"{o}rk and Slinko (2006) and to determine the analytical properties of these prices. Second, we apply our method to price options in the presence of stochastic volatility. Our main contribution to this problem is to show that the instantaneous Sharpe ratio, an integral ingredient in our methodology, is the negative of the market price of volatility risk, as defined in Fouque, Papanicolaou, and Sircar (2000).Comment: Keywords: Pricing derivative securities, incomplete markets, Sharpe ratio, correlated assets, stochastic volatility, non-linear partial differential equations, good deal bound

How do supply chain management and information systems practices influence operational performance?:Evidence from emerging country SMEs

    Get PDF
This study first provides a comparative analysis of the impact of supply chain management (SCM) and information systems (IS) practices on operational performance (OPER) of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in two neighbouring emerging country markets of Turkey and Bulgaria. Then, we investigate moderating effects of both SCM–IS-linked enablers and inhibitors on the links between SCM and IS practices and OPER of SMEs. To this end, we first empirically identify the underlying dimensions of SCM and IS practices, and SCM–IS-related enabling and inhibiting factors. Second, a series of regression analyses are undertaken to estimate the impact of the study's constructs on OPER of SMEs. The results are discussed comparatively within the contexts of both Turkish and Bulgarian SMEs and beyond. The study makes a significant contribution to the extant literature through obtaining and analysing cross-national survey data of SCM and IS practices in emerging country markets

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Atrial fibrillation was previously reported in patients with esophageal cancer as a complication of total esophagectomy or photodynamic therapy. Here, we propose that atrial fibrillation may also be caused by external compression of the left atrium by esophageal cancer.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present a 58-year-old man who developed atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular rate in the emergency room while being evaluated for dysphagia and weight loss. Atrial fibrillation lasted less than 12 hours and did not recur. Echocardiogram did not reveal any structural heart disease. A 10-cm, ulcerated mid-esophageal mass was seen during esophagogastroscopy. Microscopic examination showed squamous cell carcinoma. Computed tomography of the chest revealed esophageal thickening compressing the left atrium.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>External compression of the left atrium was previously reported to provoke atrial fibrillation. Similarly, esophageal cancer may precipitate atrial fibrillation by mechanical compression of the left atrium or pulmonary veins, triggering ectopic beats in susceptible patients.</p

Exploring wind direction and SO2 concentration by circular-linear density estimation

The study of environmental problems usually requires the description of variables with different nature and the assessment of relations between them. In this work, an algorithm for flexible estimation of the joint density for a circular-linear variable is proposed. The method is applied for exploring the relation between wind direction and SO2 concentration in a monitoring station close to a power plant located in Galicia (NW-Spain), in order to compare the effectiveness of precautionary measures for pollutants reduction in two different years.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 2 table

    Electrically Small Supergain Arrays

The theory, computer simulations, and experimental measurements are presented for electrically small two-element supergain arrays with near optimal endfire gains of 7 dB. We show how the difficulties of narrow tolerances, large mismatches, low radiation efficiencies, and reduced scattering of electrically small parasitic elements are overcome by using electrically small resonant antennas as the elements in both separately driven and singly driven (parasitic) two-element electrically small supergain endfire arrays. Although rapidly increasing narrow tolerances prevent the practical realization of the maximum theoretically possible endfire gain of electrically small arrays with many elements, the theory and preliminary numerical simulations indicate that near maximum supergains are also achievable in practice for electrically small arrays with three (and possibly more) resonant elements if the decreasing bandwidth with increasing number of elements can be tolerated.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation (December 2006
