Adapting SAM for CDF
The CDF and D0 experiments probe the high-energy frontier and as they do so
have accumulated hundreds of Terabytes of data on the way to petabytes of data
over the next two years. The experiments have made a commitment to use the
developing Grid based on the SAM system to handle these data. The D0 SAM has
been extended for use in CDF as common patterns of design emerged to meet the
similar requirements of these experiments. The process by which the merger was
achieved is explained with particular emphasis on lessons learned concerning
the database design patterns plus realization of the use cases.Comment: Talk from the 2003 Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics

Event Indexing Systems for Efficient Selection and Analysis of HERA Data
The design and implementation of two software systems introduced to improve
the efficiency of offline analysis of event data taken with the ZEUS Detector
at the HERA electron-proton collider at DESY are presented. Two different
approaches were made, one using a set of event directories and the other using
a tag database based on a commercial object-oriented database management
system. These are described and compared. Both systems provide quick direct
access to individual collision events in a sequential data store of several
terabytes, and they both considerably improve the event analysis efficiency. In
particular the tag database provides a very flexible selection mechanism and
can dramatically reduce the computing time needed to extract small subsamples
from the total event sample. Gains as large as a factor 20 have been obtained.Comment: Accepted for publication in Computer Physics Communication
Housing metadata for the common physicist using a relational database
SAM was developed as a data handling system for Run II at Fermilab. SAM is a collection of services, each described by metadata. The metadata are modeled on a relational database, and implemented in ORACLE. SAM, originally deployed in production for the D0 Run II experiment, has now been also deployed at CDF and is being commissioned at MINOS. This illustrates that the metadata decomposition of its services has a broader applicability than just one experiment. A joint working group on metadata with representatives from ATLAS, BaBar, CDF, CMS, D0, and LHCB in cooperation with EGEE has examined this metadata decomposition in the light of general HEP user requirements. Greater understanding of the required services of a performant data handling system has emerged from Run II experience. This experience is being merged with the understanding being developed in the course of LHC experience with data challenges and user case discussions. We describe the SAM schema and the commonalities of function and service support between this schema and proposals for the LHC experiments. We describe the support structure required for SAM schema updates, the use of development, integration, and production instances. We are also looking at the LHC proposals for the evolution of schema using keyword-value pairs that are then transformed into a normalized, performant database schema
Measurement of inclusive D*+- and associated dijet cross sections in photoproduction at HERA
Inclusive photoproduction of D*+- mesons has been measured for photon-proton
centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 < W < 280 GeV and a photon virtuality
Q^2 < 1 GeV^2. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of
37 pb^-1. Total and differential cross sections as functions of the D*
transverse momentum and pseudorapidity are presented in restricted kinematical
regions and the data are compared with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative
QCD calculations using the "massive charm" and "massless charm" schemes. The
measured cross sections are generally above the NLO calculations, in particular
in the forward (proton) direction. The large data sample also allows the study
of dijet production associated with charm. A significant resolved as well as a
direct photon component contribute to the cross section. Leading order QCD
Monte Carlo calculations indicate that the resolved contribution arises from a
significant charm component in the photon. A massive charm NLO parton level
calculation yields lower cross sections compared to the measured results in a
kinematic region where the resolved photon contribution is significant.Comment: 32 pages including 6 figure
Angular and Current-Target Correlations in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA
Correlations between charged particles in deep inelastic ep scattering have
been studied in the Breit frame with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an
integrated luminosity of 6.4 pb-1. Short-range correlations are analysed in
terms of the angular separation between current-region particles within a cone
centred around the virtual photon axis. Long-range correlations between the
current and target regions have also been measured. The data support
predictions for the scaling behaviour of the angular correlations at high Q2
and for anti-correlations between the current and target regions over a large
range in Q2 and in the Bjorken scaling variable x. Analytic QCD calculations
and Monte Carlo models correctly describe the trends of the data at high Q2,
but show quantitative discrepancies. The data show differences between the
correlations in deep inelastic scattering and e+e- annihilation.Comment: 26 pages including 10 figures (submitted to Eur. J. Phys. C
Measurement of the azimuthal angle dependence of inclusive jet yields in Pb+Pb collisions at âsNN=2.76ââTeV with the ATLAS detector
Measurements of the variation of inclusive jet suppression as a function of relative azimuthal angle, ÎÏ, with respect to the elliptic event plane provide insight into the path-length dependence of jet quenching. ATLAS has measured the ÎÏ dependence of jet yields in 0.14âânb-1 of âsNN=2.76ââTeV Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC for jet transverse momenta pT>45ââGeV in different collision centrality bins using an underlying event subtraction procedure that accounts for elliptic flow. The variation of the jet yield with ÎÏ was characterized by the parameter, v2jet, and the ratio of out-of-plane (ÎÏâŒÏ/2) to in-plane (ÎÏâŒ0) yields. Nonzero v2jet values were measured in all centrality bins for pT<160ââGeV. The jet yields are observed to vary by as much as 20% between in-plane and out-of-plane directions
Search for dark matter in events with a hadronically decaying W or Z boson and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at âs=8ââTeV with the ATLAS detector
A search is presented for dark matter pair production in association with a W or Z boson in pp collisions representing 20.3ââfbâ1 of integrated luminosity at sâ=8ââTeV using data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with a hadronic jet with the jet mass consistent with a W or Z boson, and with large missing transverse momentum are analyzed. The data are consistent with the standard model expectations. Limits are set on the mass scale in effective field theories that describe the interaction of dark matter and standard model particles, and on the cross section of Higgs production and decay to invisible particles. In addition, cross section limits on the anomalous production of W or Z bosons with large missing transverse momentum are set in two fiducial regions
Search for quantum black hole production in high-invariant-mass lepton + jet final states using pp collisions at âs = 8 TeV and the ATLAS detector
A search is reported for a neutral Higgs boson in the decay channel HâZÎł, Zââ +â - (â = e, ÎŒ), using 4.5 fb-1 of pp collisions at s=7 TeV and 20.3 fb-1 of pp collisions at s=8 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The observed distribution of the invariant mass of the three final-state particles, mââÎł, is consistent with the Standard Model hypothesis in the investigated mass range of 120-150 GeV. For a Higgs boson with a mass of 125.5 GeV, the observed upper limit at the 95% confidence level is 11 times the Standard Model expectation. Upper limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio of a neutral Higgs boson with mass in the range 120-150 GeV between 0.13 and 0.5 pb for s=8 TeV at 95% confidence level
Dynamics of isolated-photon plus jet production in pp collisions at âs=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The dynamics of isolated-photon plus jet production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV has been studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 37 pbâ1. Measurements of isolated-photon plus jet bin-averaged cross sections are presented as functions of photon transverse energy, jet transverse momentum and jet rapidity. In addition, the bin-averaged cross sections as functions of the difference between the azimuthal angles of the photon and the jet, the photonâjet invariant mass and the scattering angle in the photonâjet centre-of-mass frame have been measured. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations are compared to the measurements and provide a good description of the data, except for the case of the azimuthal opening angle
