Endomorphisms of the Cuntz Algebras and the Thompson Groups

We investigate the relationship between endomorphisms of the Cuntz algebra O2{\mathcal O}_2 and endomorphisms of the Thompson groups FF, TT and VV represented inside the unitary group of O2{\mathcal O}_2. For an endomorphism λu\lambda_u of O2{\mathcal O}_2, we show that λu(V)⊆V\lambda_u(V)\subseteq V if and only if u∈Vu\in V. If λu\lambda_u is an automorphism of O2{\mathcal O}_2 then u∈Vu\in V is equivalent to λu(F)⊆V\lambda_u(F)\subseteq V. Our investigations are facilitated by introduction of the concept of modestly scaling endomorphism of On{\mathcal O}_n, whose properties and examples are investigated.Comment: v1: 10 pages. v2: minor changes, updated reference list, 11 pages; to appear in Studia Mathematic

KMS states on Nica-Toeplitz algebras of product systems

We investigate KMS states of Fowler's Nica-Toeplitz algebra NT(X)\mathcal{NT}(X) associated to a compactly aligned product system XX over a semigroup PP of Hilbert bimodules. This analysis relies on restrictions of these states to the core algebra which satisfy appropriate scaling conditions. The concept of product system of finite type is introduced. If (G,P)(G, P) is a lattice ordered group and XX is a product system of finite type over PP satisfying certain coherence properties, we construct KMSβ_\beta states of \NT(X) associated to a scalar dynamics from traces on the coefficient algebra of the product system. Our results were motivated by, and generalize some of the results of Laca and Raeburn obtained for the Toeplitz algebra of the affine semigroup over the natural numbers.Comment: Changes to Proposition 3.1 and Theorem 4.10. Major changes to section 5 starting from (and including) new Lemma 5.4 to new Example 5.1

    Vortices in polariton OPO superfluids

This chapter reviews the occurrence of quantised vortices in polariton fluids, primarily when polaritons are driven in the optical parametric oscillator (OPO) regime. We first review the OPO physics, together with both its analytical and numerical modelling, the latter being necessary for the description of finite size systems. Pattern formation is typical in systems driven away from equilibrium. Similarly, we find that uniform OPO solutions can be unstable to the spontaneous formation of quantised vortices. However, metastable vortices can only be injected externally into an otherwise stable symmetric state, and their persistence is due to the OPO superfluid properties. We discuss how the currents charactering an OPO play a crucial role in the occurrence and dynamics of both metastable and spontaneous vortices.Comment: 40 pages, 16 figure

On conjugacy of maximal abelian subalgebras and the outer automorphism group of the Cuntz algebra

We investigate the structure of the outer automorphism group of the Cuntz algebra and the closely related problem of conjugacy of maximal abelian subalgebras in On. In particular, we exhibit an uncountable family of maximal abelian subalgebras, conjugate to the standard maximal abelian subalgebra Dn via Bogolubov automorphisms, that are not inner conjugate to Dn
