    Counteracting Phishing Page Polymorphism: An Image Layout Analysis Approach

    Abstract. Many visual similarity-based phishing page detectors have been developed to detect phishing webpages, however, scammers now cre-ate polymorphic phishing pages to breach the defense of those detectors. We call this kind of countermeasure phishing page polymorphism. Poly-morphic pages are visually similar to genuine pages they try to mimic, but they use different representation techniques. It increases the level of difficulty to detect phishing pages. In this paper, we propose an effective detection mechanism to detect polymorphic phishing pages. In contrast to existing approaches, we analyze the layout of webpages rather than the HTML codes, colors, or content. Specifically, we compute the sim-ilarity degree of a suspect page and an authentic page through image processing techniques. Then, the degrees of similarity are ranked by a classifier trained to detect phishing pages. To verify the efficacy of our phishing detection mechanism, we collected 6, 750 phishing pages and 312 mimicked targets for the performance evaluation. The results show that our method achieves an excellent detection rate of 99.6%.

    Coenzyme Q0 from Antrodia cinnamomea

    We investigated the anticancer effects of Antrodia cinnamomea, a medicinal mushroom from Taiwan, on A549 human lung cancer cells using the ethyl acetate extract from submerged culture filtrates. Our results showed that 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone (coenzyme Q0; CoQ0) derived from A. cinnamomea submerged culture filtrates has anticancer activity. CoQ0 treatment reduced the viability of A549, HepG2, and SW480 cancer cell lines. Furthermore, CoQ0 induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and apoptosis in A549 cells, which was inhibited by the antioxidant ascorbic acid. To our knowledge, these data demonstrate for the first time that CoQ0 derived from A. cinnamomea submerged culture filtrates exerts its anticancer effect through the induction of ROS-mediated apoptosis in A549 human lung cancer cells

    Comorbidity and dementia: A nationwide survey in Taiwan

    Background Comorbid medical diseases are highly prevalent in the geriatric population, imposing hardship on healthcare services for demented individuals. Dementia also complicates clinical care for other co-existing medical conditions. This study investigated the comorbidities associated with dementia in the elderly population aged 65 years and over in Taiwan. Methods We conducted a nationwide, population-based, cross-sectional survey; participants were selected by computerized random sampling from all 19 Taiwan counties between December 2011 and March 2013. After exclusion of incomplete or erroneous data, 8,456 subjects were enrolled. Of them, 6,183 were cognitively normal (control group), 1,576 had mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 697 had dementia. We collected information about types of comorbidities (i.e., vascular risk factors, lung diseases, liver diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, and cancers), Charlson comorbidity index score, and demographic variables to compare subjects with normal cognition, MCI, and dementia. Results Regardless of the cognitive condition, over 60% of the individuals in each group had at least one comorbid disease. The proportion of subjects possessing at least three comorbidities was higher in those with cognitive impairment (MCI 20.9%, dementia 27.3%) than in control group (15%). Hypertension and diabetes mellitus were the most common comorbidities. The mean number of comorbidities and Charlson comorbidity index score were greater in MCI and dementia groups than in control group. Logistic regression demonstrated that the comorbidities significantly associated with MCI and dementia were cerebrovascular disease (OR 3.35, CI 2.62–4.28), cirrhosis (OR 3.29, CI 1.29–8.41), asthma (OR 1.56, CI 1.07–2.27), and diabetes mellitus (OR 1.24, CI 1.07–1.44). Conclusion Multiple medical comorbid diseases are common in older adults, especially in those with cognitive impairment. Cerebrovascular disease, cirrhosis, asthma, and diabetes mellitus are important contributors to cognitive deterioration in the elderly. Efforts to lower cumulative medical burden in the geriatric population may benefit cognitive function

    Use and effectiveness of dapagliflozin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a multicenter retrospective study in Taiwan

    Aims/Introduction To investigate the clinical outcomes of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who initiated dapagliflozin in real-world practice in Taiwan. Materials and Methods In this multicenter retrospective study, adult patients with T2DM who initiated dapagliflozin after May 1st 2016 either as add-on or switch therapy were included. Changes in clinical and laboratory parameters were evaluated at 3 and 6 months. Baseline factors associated with dapagliflozin response in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were analyzed by univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Results A total of 1,960 patients were eligible. At 6 months, significant changes were observed: HbA1c by −0.73% (95% confidence interval [CI] −0.80, −0.67), body weight was -1.61 kg (95% CI −1.79, −1.42), and systolic/diastolic blood pressure by −3.6/−1.4 mmHg. Add-on dapagliflozin showed significantly greater HbA1c reduction (−0.82%) than switched therapy (−0.66%) (p = 0.002). The proportion of patients achieving HbA1c <7% target increased from 6% at baseline to 19% at Month 6. Almost 80% of patients experienced at least 1% reduction in HbA1c, and 65% of patients showed both weight loss and reduction in HbA1c. Around 37% of patients had at least 3% weight loss. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated patients with higher baseline HbA1c and those who initiated dapagliflozin as add-on therapy were associated with a greater reduction in HbA1c. Conclusions In this real-world study with the highest patient number of Chinese population to date, the use of dapagliflozin was associated with significant improvement in glycemic control, body weight, and blood pressure in patients with T2DM.     Diagnosis of Neonatal Intrahepatic Cholestasis Caused by Citrin Deficiency Using High-Resolution Melting Analysis and a Clinical Scoring System

    Objective To assess the diagnosis of neonatal intrahepatic cholestasis caused by citrin deficiency (NICCD) by using high-resolution melting (HRM) analysis and a clinical scoring system. Study design Genetic variations in the 18 coding exons were prescreened using HRM analysis and then confirmed by direct sequencing. To establish a scoring system, clinical features of 20 patients with NICCD diagnosed in Taiwan between the years 2000 and 2008 were compared with those of 47 patients with biliary atresia and 35 with infantile cholestasis. Results Eight types of mutations/polymorphisms were identified in patients with NICCD, including 5 mutations in the coding region or splice site (c.851del4, c.1638ins23, R553Q, IVS6+5G &gt; A, IVS11+1G &gt; A), and 3 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (IVS11+17C &gt; G, IVS4+6A &gt; G/rs6957975, and c.1194A &gt; G/rs2301629). The 3 hotspot mutations (c.851del4, c.1638ins23, and IVS6+5G &gt; A) comprised 33/35 (94.3%) mutated alleles. The patients with NICCD had a higher frequency of the rs6957975 polymorphism compared with 103 healthy controls (P &lt; .0001). A 6-point scoring system was proposed according to clinical parameters. The patients with NICCD tended to score &gt;= 4 points, whereas biliary atresia and other infantile cholestasis tended to score &lt;4 points (P &lt; .0001). Conclusions HRM analysis was efficient and effective in detecting mutations. Three common mutations comprised the majority of mutations found in our patients. The IVS4+6A &gt; G polymorphism was associated with NICCD. A scoring system may help to differentiate patients with NICCD from those with biliary atresia. (J Pediatr 2012;161:626-31)

    Hepcidin correlates with interleukin-1β and interleukin-6 but not iron deficiency in children with Helicobacter pylori infection

    Background: Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with iron deficiency (ID) in children. Inflammatory cytokine reactions could influence the consequences of H. pylori infection. Hepcidin is an important regulator in iron homeostasis and could be induced by chronic inflammation. The relationship between hepcidin and cytokine levels in children infected with H. pylori remains controversial. Methods: Based on serology testing for anti-H. pylori IgG, participants (43 seropositive and 43 seronegative) aged 10–18 years were enrolled. Serum hepcidin levels and iron profiles, including iron, ferritin, and total iron-binding capacity, were measured. ID is defined as iron saturation less than 15%. Seropositive children were divided into low hepcidin (n = 22) and high hepcidin (n = 21) groups. IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 serum levels were compared. Results: Serum IL-1β and IL-6 levels were comparable between H. pylori seropositive and seronegative children, as were the median serum hepcidin levels (6.5 ng/mL versus 8.6 ng/mL; P = 0.1318). Median levels of serum iron, ferritin, and iron saturation were significantly lower in seropositive children with low hepcidin than in those with high hepcidin (P = 0.0123, P = 0.0001, and P = 0.0004, respectively). The prevalence of ID was significantly higher in those with low serum hepcidin levels (33.3% versus 4.5%; P = 0.015). Compared to the high hepcidin seropositive group, the low hepcidin group had significantly lower median serum levels of cytokines IL-1β and IL-6, but not IL-8 (P = 0.0151 and P = 0.0015, respectively). Conclusions: Inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-6, but not IL-8, might be associated with increased hepcidin levels among H. pylori-seropositive children.     Electroactive Composites with Block Copolymer-Templated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Magnetic Hyperthermia Application

    Cancer has been one of the leading causes of human death for centuries. Magnetic hyperthermia is a promising technique to confine and control cancers. However, particles used in magnetic hyperthermia leaking from where the cancers are located could compromise human health. Therefore, we developed electroactive iron oxide/block copolymer composites to tackle the leakage problem. Experimental results show that oleylamine-modified magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) particles and electroactive tetraaniline (TA) could be templated in the self-assembled microstructures of sulfonated [styrene-b-(ethylene-ran-butylene)-b-styrene] (S-SEBS) block copolymers. Various amounts of Fe3O4 particles and TA oligomer were incorporated in S-SEBS block copolymer and their electroactive behavior was confirmed by exhibiting two pairs of well-defined anodic and cathodic current peaks in cyclic voltammetry tests. The heating performance of the resultant TA/Fe3O4/polymer composites improved on increasing the added amount of Fe3O4 particles and TA oligomers. Both Fe3O4 and TA can contribute to improved heating performance, but Fe3O4 possesses a greater contribution than TA does.
