    Cet article est le texte d’une conférence donnée sur la préparation de la première anthologie canadienne de cultural studies (2009). La parution d’un tel ouvrage soulève des questions importantes à propos de l’idée de tradition intellectuelle et de la prégnance des imaginaires de la nation et du national dans notre compréhension de la culture. Cette conférence, comme le livre qu’elle présente, fait état des ambivalences qui caractérisent généralement les cultural studies, et les cultural studies canadiennes en particulier. L’idée de ce projet editorial n’était pas de pas de créer un ensemble canonique d’écrits sur le Canada, ou qui refléterait la profondeur d’une quelconque essence canadienne, mais plutôt de saisir la logique des formations spécifiques de celle-ci, en les mettant en lien avec les intuitions les plus pertinentes et les plus stimulantes que nous offrent les cultural studies qui sont pratiquées un peu partout.This is the text of Imre Szeman's public conference presenting the first Canadian Anthology of Cultural Studies (2009) which he co-edited. This anthology raises the key questions of intellectual tradition, metaphorical empires, and of the 'national' dimension built into our own critical understanding of culture in Canada. In this conference, Szeman also points to a set of issues concerning Canadian Cultural Studies' particular and ambivalent development in relation to Canada's modernization process and also in relation to the international development of Cultural Studies as a body of cultural criticism and theory.Este artículo es el texto de una conferencia dada en torno a la preparación de la primera antología canadiense de Cultural studies. La aparición de esta obra suscita cuestiones importantes en relación con la idea de tradición intelectual y de la influencia de los imaginarios de la nación y de lo nacional en nuestra comprensión de la cultura, cuestiones muy pertinentes en la actualidad. Esta conferencia, como el libro al cual ella se refiere, manifiesta las ambivalencias que caracterizan generalmente los Cultural studies y lo Cultural studies canadienses en particular. La idea no es de crear un conjunto canónico de escritos sobre Canadá, o significar que ellos reflejarían la profundidad de una supuesta esencia canadiense, sino de comprender la lógica de sus formaciones especificas, poniéndolas en relación con la instituciones más pertinentes y estimulantes que nos ofrecen les Cultural studies que son practicados en todos lados

    In order to get past the blind spots that have developed in contemporary postcolonial theory, it is essential to seek out complementarities and solidarities in different national situations and in different modernities. This essay undertakes this task by exploring the homologous situations faced in Brazil and Canada in their respective attempts to create genuine national cultures. As in many postcolonial situations, the problem of creating an authentic culture is directly related to the sense that postcolonial culture is necessarily imitative and belated. In Misplaced Ideas, Roberto Schwarz exposes the hidden class character of the problem of cultural authenticity in Brazil, and in so doing, shows that the trauma of national-cultural identity merely reflects the contradictory structural position of Brazil’s postcolonial elite. Using Schwarz’s insights to explore the Canadian situation, the author shows that the same forces are at work in Canada. Though the crisis of a lack of an authentic Canadian culture has recently been surmounted as a result of the apparent international success of Canadian culture (especially literary fiction), that author cautions that this “success” story hides the class basis of Canadian culture in both its belated and isochronic phases (the latter being the moment when cultural belatedness is overcome). Making use of Brazilian theory to examine problems in Canadian culture allows us to see that Canadian modernity, long thought to be simply a derivative of the UK and USA, has similarities with Brazilian modernity that are essential to understanding the space and place Canada occupies in globalization
