AbstractFor many years Poland has seen a rapid increase in the incidence of cancer. The incidence of cancer is increasing worldwide. WHO Expert Committee, summing up the state of knowledge about the epidemiology of malignant tumors, said that much of it is the result of lifestyle and environment. It is estimated that approx. 20-30% of all malignant cancers diet related, the development of which are important nutritional factors. The aim of the study was to analyze the nutritional factors for the appearance of cancer and the identification of risks from the diet. Knowledge of the risk factors for cancer may enable the creation of the Dietary Guidelines for antitumor therapy. Numerous studies confirm the impact of diet on the formation and progression of cancer because it seems relevant to the prevention of cancer by raising awareness about relevant health behaviors, including proper eating habits. The risk of cancer can be modified by m. In maintaining a healthy body weight, eating the right amount of fruits and vegetables, avoiding alcohol. The aim should be to introduce nutritional education already in children and adolescents which could eventually allow the reduction of tumors diethoxy subsidiaries. Studies have shown that people with high levels of knowledge about cancer prevention undertake more favorable health behavior

Parents’ education and awareness of the environmental health hazards for children

Introduction. Environmental health hazards can include, among others, exposure to heavy metals (lead, cadmium), pesticides, dioxins, impurities in toys, tobacco smoke and indoor air pollution. Children are continually developing, which points to the need to recognize them as a group particularly vulnerable to the adverse health effects of environmental factors on health. The aim of this study is to examine the awareness of parents living in the province of Silesia in the field of health hazards occurring in home and children’s play area and check if awareness depends on the education of the parents. Material and methods. The research method was an initial questionnaire containing questions about the health risks associated with children’s playground, exposure to heavy metals, dangerous or potentially dangerous toys, exposure to tobacco smoke in the living AREA and harmful substances indoors and outdoors. The study included 218 parents from the province of Silesia. Results. Regardless of education 75% of those surveyed mistakenly believe that children’s exposure indoors is lower than outdoors. More than half of parents with primary education or/vocational and 1/3 of people with higher education do not see the problem of children's exposure to heavy metals. The main route of exposure of children to heavy metals, according to parents with primary education or vocational training is the skin. About 5% of parents with higher and 25% of respondents with primary/ vocational education, smoke cigarettes with a child. Conclusions. The results indicate that the higher the level of education of the parents, the greater awareness of children's environmental health hazards, but knowledge in this area is still fragmented and needs to be completed. Materiał i metody.

The Mechanism of Phosphoryl Transfer Reaction and the Role of Active Site Residues on the Basis of Ribokinase-Like Kinases

    No full text
The role of ribokinase-like carbohydrate kinases consists in ATP dependent phosphorylation of small molecules containing hydroxymethyl group. Although they differ substantially in structural terms and exhibit a broad substrate specificity, some family-wide conserved features can be distinguished suggesting the common mode of action. 4-methyl-5-β-hydroxyethylthiazole kinase (Thz kinase) was chosen as a representative model and the mechanism proposed in X-ray crystal structure paper provided the basis for calculations. In particular, the possible role of several active site residues (Arg121 and Cys198 among others) and of the two magnesium ions was examined. Static and dynamic catalytic fields for the reaction were generated revealing the most favourable environment for the preferential transition state stabilization. An attempt to model the phosphoryl transfer reaction as well as to investigate the influence of the cysteine residue on the reaction course at the semiempirical PM3 level of theory was undertaken

Structure of Alkylimidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids at the Interface with Vacuum and WaterA Molecular Dynamics Study

    No full text
Ionic liquid (IL) interfaces with vacuum and water are studied by means of classical molecular dynamics simulations. Five ILs are compared: [C2mim][TfO], [C12mim][TfO], [C2mim][NTf2], [C8mim][NTf2] and [C12mim][NTf2], where [C2mim], [C8mim] and [C12mim] stand for 1-ethyl-, 1-octyl- and 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium cation. Physical propertiesdensity, thermal expansion coefficient, compressibility, surface tension, heat of vaporization, self-diffusion coefficient, electric conductivity and viscosityare calculated and validated against experimental values. The structure of the interfaces is compared in terms of the orientation of the molecules and segregation into layers. It is observed that ILs with short alkyl chains orient at the surface; however, there is no single preferred orientation. ILs with longer chains, on the other hand, orient with alkyl chains protruding into the vacuum at the IL/vacuum interface and into the bulk IL, at the IL/water interface. Anions and water molecules tend to associate with polar imidazolium groups

Teaching profession dates back to ancient times, when formulation of an ideal of a man with comprehensively developed personality was primarily based on such values as wisdom and knowledge. The profession of a teacher/master was influenced by many factors and underwent numerous transformations over the centuries. Aim. The aim is to assess the impact of stress and burnout at work and functioning of the teachers. Material and methods. The survey was conducted using a proprietary questionnaire consisting of 21 questions, in which the respondent select one of the following answers. The study assured full anonymity. The survey was conducted among a group of randomly selected teacher of primary, middle and secondary schools operating in the province of Opole. Results. As a result of conducted research it appeared that 54% of respondents many times a week feel stress related to their work. There are 28% of surveyed to sense nervous tension due to their professional occupation. 10% among them admit to experience this kind of stress up to twice a week whereas 8% of them tend to feel stressed once a week or less often.  Conclusions. It is obvious that stress cannot be totally eliminated out of teacher profession. However we can reduce its size by applying a number of tools. These can be following: Implementation of educational programs dedicated for teachers- programs which aim at minimizing consequences of stress on teacher’s health and life as well as on their environment. Organizing of workshops of “coping with stress” and with difficult situations; education of behaving in situations of “overload”. The change of system of educating teachers and gaining professional competences.   Key words: stress, teacher, teaching profession, occupational burnout
