Design of Langmuir-Blodgett-Films for Nonlinear Optics

    No full text
Results are presented on the design, preparation and characterization of Langmuir-Blodgett films formed from stearyl (S) derivatives of DAN, MAP and NPP. Molecular dynamics modelling of trilayers composed of simplified molecules reveals buckling at the interface owing to disordering of the strongly interacting head groups. Model calculations show weak dielectric interactions between neighbouring layers, and reveal major effects of molecular tilt on the quadratic and cubic susceptibilities. SDAN forms good films but SNPP and SMAP do not form stable films even in mixtures with stearic or behenic acid. All three materials give SHG as powders and as LB films. The film SHG coefficients are some 10% of those for crystals of the underivatized molecules

An Object-Oriented Methodology Using Dynamic Variables For Animation And Scientific Visualization

    No full text
An object-oriented design is presented for building dynamic three-dimensional applications. This design takes the form of the Fifth Dimension Toolkit consisting of a set of interrelated classes whose instances may be connected together in a variety of ways to form different applications. Animation is obtained by connecting graphical objects to dynamic variables, which are able to change their values over time by responding to events. The Fifth Dimension Toolkit is the core of the Fifth Dimension Project, a research project for animating synthetic actors in their environment. The design philosophy and methodology of the toolkit are also described, as well as some of the implementation issues for the Silicon Graphics Iris 4D workstation. Keywords: Object-Oriented, Animation, Scientific Visualization, Dynamic Variables. 1. INTRODUCTION Complex dynamic three-dimensional graphics systems such as task-level animation systems and scientific visualization systems all involve various activitie..

Management of conjunctival malignant melanoma: a review and update

    No full text
Conjunctival malignant melanoma is a pigmented lesion of the ocular surface. It is an uncommon but potentially devastating tumor that may invade the local tissues of the eye, spread systemically through lymphatic drainage and hematogenous spread, and recur in spite of treatment. Despite its severity, the rarity of available cases has limited the evidence for diagnosis and management. This review will provide an overview of the epidemiology, presentation, diagnosis, management, and surveillance of conjunctival melanoma, with an emphasis on recent advances in biological therapies to treat this disease
