    Continuous Open Access Special Issue "Aircraft Design": Number 3/2021

    Following the successful initial Special Issue on "Aircraft Design (SI-1/2017)" and the relaunch with "Aircraft Design (SI-2/2020)", this is already the third SI in sequence named "Aircraft Design (SI 3/2021)". Activities in the past showed that aircraft design may be a field too small to justify its own (subscription-based) journal. A continuous open access special issue may fill the gap. As such, the Special Issue "Aircraft Design" can be a home for all those working in the field who regret the absence of an aircraft design journal. SI-3/2021 contains six papers (original research articles) about 1.) Oil Fumes in the Cabin and Flight Safety, 2.) Closed-Loop Flying Quality Requirements, 3.)     A Dataset for Buffering Delays Due to the Interaction Between the Nagle Algorithm and the Delayed Acknowledgement Algorithm in Cyber-Physical Systems Communication

    Here, we provide the research community with a data set for the buffering delays that data packets experience at TCP sending side in the realm of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). We focus on the buffering that occurs at the sender side due to the the adverse interaction between the Nagle algorithm and the delayed acknowledgement algorithm, which both were originally introduced into TCP to prevent sending out many small-sized packets over the network. The data set is collected using four real-life operating systems: Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and QNX (a real-time operating system). In each scenario, there are three separate different (virtual) machines running various operating systems. One machine, or an end-host, acts a data source, another acts as a data sink, and a third acts a network emulator that introduces artificial propagation delays between the source and the destination. To measure buffering delay at the sender side, we record for each sent packet the two time instants: when the packet is first generated at the application layer, and when it is actually sent on the physical network. In each case, 10 different independent experiment replications/runs are executed. Here, we provide the full distribution of all delay samples represented by the cumulative distribution function (CDF). The data exhibited here gives an impression of the amount and scale of the delay occurring at sender-side in TCP. More importantly, the data can be used investigate to what degree these delays affect the performance of cyber-physical systems or other real-time applications employing TCP

    Designing a Conflict Management System for Higher Education: A Case Study for Design in Integrative Organizations

    In 1994, the University System of Georgia embarked on an ambitious effort to reduce the costs of disputing by creating what is now possibly the largest comprehensive, integrated conflict management system (ICMS) in higher education. For almost twenty years, the Consortium on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution has provided technical advice and support for this initiative. This article reviews the context, summarizes the ICMS design, draws a few lessons, and speculates on the value of this work. Because of my close personal involvement, I am straying from convention and telling this story from the first-person perspective. Although probably skewed by hindsight, the historical context is important because our decisions and actions reflected the prevailing conditions and our nascent level of knowledge and experience. The overarching lessons are applicable to most organizations and particularly salient for the conflict management challenges facing the diverse colleges and universities in the United States today and any multifaceted, integrative organization
