    Planetary Science Goals for the Spitzer Warm Era

    The overarching goal of planetary astronomy is to deduce how the present collection of objects found in our Solar System were formed from the original material present in the proto-solar nebula. As over two hundred exo-planetary systems are now known, and multitudes more are expected, the Solar System represents the closest and best system which we can study, and the only one in which we can clearly resolve individual bodies other than planets. In this White Paper we demonstrate how to use Spitzer Space Telescope InfraRed Array Camera Channels 1 and 2 (3.6 and 4.5 µm) imaging photometry with large dedicated surveys to advance our knowledge of Solar System formation and evolution. There are a number of vital, key projects to be pursued using dedicated large programs that have not been pursued during the five years of Spitzer cold operations. We present a number of the largest and most important projects here; more will certainly be proposed once the warm era has begun, including important observations of newly discovered objects

    Site percolation and random walks on d-dimensional Kagome lattices

    The site percolation problem is studied on d-dimensional generalisations of the Kagome' lattice. These lattices are isotropic and have the same coordination number q as the hyper-cubic lattices in d dimensions, namely q=2d. The site percolation thresholds are calculated numerically for d= 3, 4, 5, and 6. The scaling of these thresholds as a function of dimension d, or alternatively q, is different than for hypercubic lattices: p_c ~ 2/q instead of p_c ~ 1/(q-1). The latter is the Bethe approximation, which is usually assumed to hold for all lattices in high dimensions. A series expansion is calculated, in order to understand the different behaviour of the Kagome' lattice. The return probability of a random walker on these lattices is also shown to scale as 2/q. For bond percolation on d-dimensional diamond lattices these results imply p_c ~ 1/(q-1).Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX, 8 figures (EPS format), submitted to J. Phys.

    The Gibbs-Thomson formula at small island sizes - corrections for high vapour densities

    In this paper we report simulation studies of equilibrium features, namely circular islands on model surfaces, using Monte-Carlo methods. In particular, we are interested in studying the relationship between the density of vapour around a curved island and its curvature-the Gibbs-Thomson formula. Numerical simulations of a lattice gas model, performed for various sizes of islands, don't fit very well to the Gibbs-Thomson formula. We show how corrections to this form arise at high vapour densities, wherein a knowledge of the exact equation of state (as opposed to the ideal gas approximation) is necessary to predict this relationship. Exploiting a mapping of the lattice gas to the Ising model one can compute the corrections to the Gibbs-Thomson formula using high field series expansions. We also investigate finite size effects on the stability of the islands both theoretically and through simulations. Finally the simulations are used to study the microscopic origins of the Gibbs-Thomson formula. A heuristic argument is suggested in which it is partially attributed to geometric constraints on the island edge.Comment: 27 pages including 7 figures, tarred, gzipped and uuencoded.     Bond percolation on isoradial graphs: criticality and universality

    In an investigation of percolation on isoradial graphs, we prove the criticality of canonical bond percolation on isoradial embeddings of planar graphs, thus extending celebrated earlier results for homogeneous and inhomogeneous square, triangular, and other lattices. This is achieved via the star-triangle transformation, by transporting the box-crossing property across the family of isoradial graphs. As a consequence, we obtain the universality of these models at the critical point, in the sense that the one-arm and 2j-alternating-arm critical exponents (and therefore also the connectivity and volume exponents) are constant across the family of such percolation processes. The isoradial graphs in question are those that satisfy certain weak conditions on their embedding and on their track system. This class of graphs includes, for example, isoradial embeddings of periodic graphs, and graphs derived from rhombic Penrose tilings.Comment: In v2: extended title, and small changes in the tex

    Complex-Temperature Singularities in the d=2d=2 Ising Model. III. Honeycomb Lattice

    We study complex-temperature properties of the uniform and staggered susceptibilities χ\chi and χ(a)\chi^{(a)} of the Ising model on the honeycomb lattice. From an analysis of low-temperature series expansions, we find evidence that χ\chi and χ(a)\chi^{(a)} both have divergent singularities at the point z=1zz=-1 \equiv z_{\ell} (where z=e2Kz=e^{-2K}), with exponents γ=γ,a=5/2\gamma_{\ell}'= \gamma_{\ell,a}'=5/2. The critical amplitudes at this singularity are calculated. Using exact results, we extract the behaviour of the magnetisation MM and specific heat CC at complex-temperature singularities. We find that, in addition to its zero at the physical critical point, MM diverges at z=1z=-1 with exponent β=1/4\beta_{\ell}=-1/4, vanishes continuously at z=±iz=\pm i with exponent βs=3/8\beta_s=3/8, and vanishes discontinuously elsewhere along the boundary of the complex-temperature ferromagnetic phase. CC diverges at z=1z=-1 with exponent α=2\alpha_{\ell}'=2 and at v=±i/3v=\pm i/\sqrt{3} (where v=tanhKv = \tanh K) with exponent αe=1\alpha_e=1, and diverges logarithmically at z=±iz=\pm i. We find that the exponent relation α+2β+γ=2\alpha'+2\beta+\gamma'=2 is violated at z=1z=-1; the right-hand side is 4 rather than 2.     Genetic Variation of Juvenile Wood Properties in a Loblolly Pine Diallel Test

    The reduced rotation age for loblolly pine plantations has resulted in an increased percentage of juvenile wood. Juvenile wood has lower wood density, shorter tracheid length and higher lignin content than mature wood. The increased use of juvenile wood has reduced yields and increased pulping costs for the pulp and paper industry. If significant genetic variation in juvenile wood properties can be found, breeders may be able to improve juvenile wood properties to reduce pulping losses. Genetic variation in several wood quality traits of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) was investigated for 14 full-sib families generated by a 6-parent half-diallel mating design. Wood samples of 12 mm increment cores were collected from 11-year-old trees from one test site. Earlywood and latewood of ring three (juvenile wood) and ring eight (transition wood) for each increment core were analyzed for alpha cellulose content (ACY), average fiber length (FLW), coarseness (COA), and lignin content (LIG). Ring three and ring eight had significant differences in ACY, FLW, and COA, but not for LIG. Latewood of both rings had higher ACY, FLW, and COA than earlywood. Transition wood had significantly higher ACY, FLW, and COA, but lower LIG than juvenile wood. Families differed significantly for ACY, FLW, and COA, but not for LIG. In general, additive genetic effects explained greater percentages of family variation than dominance genetic effects. Genetic variation increased from juvenile to transition wood.     Controlling a spillover pathway with the molecular cork effect

    Spillover of reactants from one active site to another is important in heterogeneous catalysis and has recently been shown to enhance hydrogen storage in a variety of materials. The spillover of hydrogen is notoriously hard to detect or control. We report herein that the hydrogen spillover pathway on a Pd/Cu alloy can be controlled by reversible adsorption of a spectator molecule. Pd atoms in the Cu surface serve as hydrogen dissociation sites from which H atoms can spillover onto surrounding Cu regions. Selective adsorption of CO at these atomic Pd sites is shown to either prevent the uptake of hydrogen on, or inhibit its desorption from, the surface. In this way, the hydrogen coverage on the whole surface can be controlled by molecular adsorption at a minority site, which we term a ‘molecular cork’ effect. We show that the molecular cork effect is present during a surface catalysed hydrogenation reaction and illustrate how it can be used as a method for controlling uptake and release of hydrogen in a model storage syste

    'Dressage Is Full of Queens!' Masculinity, Sexuality and Equestrian Sport

    Attitudes towards sexuality are changing and levels of cultural homophobia decreasing, yet there remain very few openly gay men within sport. As a proving ground for heteromasculinity, sport has traditionally been a hostile environment for gay men. This article is based on an ethnographic study within a sporting subworld in which gay men do appear to be accepted: equestrian sport. Drawing on inclusive masculinity theory, equestrian sport is shown to offer an unusually tolerant environment for gay men in which heterosexual men of all ages demonstrate low levels of homophobia. Inclusive masculinity theory is a useful framework for exploring the changing nature of masculinities and this study demonstrates that gay men are becoming increasingly visible and accepted within once unreceptive locales, such as sport and rural communities. However, this more tolerant attitude is purchased at the expense of a subordinated feminine Other, perpetuating the dominance of men within competitive sport. © The Author(s) 2012
