Observation of 'ghost' islands and surfactant effect of surface gallium atoms during GaN growth by molecular beam epitaxy

    Get PDF
GaN (0001) films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) were studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). 'Ghost' islands were observed on surfaces grown under excess Ga conditions. These ghost islands were associated to a metastable, intermediate nucleation state of the surface.published_or_final_versio

Initial stage of GaN growth and its implication to defect formation in films

    Get PDF
In situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observations of initial growth processes of GaN by molecularbeam epitaxy reveal important differences between growth on vicinal versus flat SiC(0001) substrates. Based on stop-growth STM studies, we explain why there are orders of magnitude reductions in the density of threading screw dislocations in the vicinal films. It is shown that on vicinal surfaces, three-dimensional (3D) islands develop into a characteristic shape. The islands coalesce much sooner than on flat surfaces. Consequently, fewer defects are created at their boundaries.published_or_final_versio

Possible flat band bending of the Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3 crystal cleaved in an ambient air probed by terahertz emission spectroscopy

We investigate an evolution of the surface electronic state of the Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3 single crystal, which is one of the most bulk insulating topological insulators, by examining terahertz light emitted from the sample surface upon the illumination of the near-infrared femtosecond laser pulses. We find that the surface state with a flat band bending can appear in the course of the natural maturation process of the surface state in an ambient air. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the evolution of the surface electronic state can be accelerated, decelerated, or even stopped by controlling environmental conditions to contain different amount of H2O, in particular.1121Ysciescopu

Comparative study on the broadening of exciton luminescence linewidth due to phonon in zinc-blende and wurtzite GaN epilayers

The broadening of exciton luminescence linewidth due to phonon in zinc-blende and wurtzite GaN epilayers was discussed. The coupling parameters between exciton and acoustic and longitudinal optical phonons were obtained for both structures. The analysis showed that the coupling constants of both exciton-acoustic optial phonon coupling and exciton-longitudinal optical phonon coupling for zinc-blende GaN were almost twice as much as the corresponding values of wurtzite GaN.published_or_final_versio

Effects of Rosiglitazone on the Expression of PPAR-&#947 and on the Production of IL-6 and IL-8 in Acute Lung Injury Model Using Human Pulmonary Epithelial Cells

Purpose: Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ ligand is known to repress the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators. However, it is unclear how it affects PPAR-γ expression and the inflammatory response in the human lung. We investigated the effects of rosiglitazone (synthetic PPAR-γ ligand) on the PPAR-γ expression and on the IL-6 and IL-8 production in acute lung injury model using human lung epithelial cells. Methods: A549 and Beas-2B cells were pre-treated with rosiglitazone and/or BADGE (selective PPAR-γ antagonist) and then treated with media control or cytokine mixture including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IFN-γ. PPAR-γ expression was analyzed in cell lysates by Western blot. IL-6 and IL-8 production was measured in the culture supernatants by ELISA.Results: PPAR-γ expression was identified in all experimental groups except for the control. The cytokine mixture-induced IL-6 and IL-8 production was significantly inhibited by pre-treatment with rosiglitazone (P<0.01). However, this inhibitory effect of rosiglitazone was not reversed by BADGE. Conclusion: These suggest that rosiglitazone induces the PPAR-γ expression and it may inhibit the cytokine mixture-induced IL-6 and IL-8 production through the PPAR-γ independent pathway. The inhibitory mechanisms of rosiglitazone on the cytokine mixture-induced IL-6 and IL-8 production in human alveolar, and bronchial epithelial cells remain to be further investigated. Keywords: Rosiglitazone, PPAR-γ expression, IL-6, IL-8, Acute lung injur

Can net photosynthesis and water relations provide a clue on the forest decline of Quercus suber in North Tunisia?

    Get PDF
Net photosynthesis, sap flow density (SFD) and water use efficiency (WUE) were measured in a Quercus suber forest in north Tunisia in an attempt to explain the forest decline. In general, sap flow was positively related to light intensity and water loss, indicating that high light intensities can increase the SFD up to the saturation point in the cork oak. CO2 assimilation of cork oak in this region was light intensity-dependent. Cork oak showed a general increase in photosynthetic rates with increasing light intensity up to the light saturation point. Increased radiation probably increased the photosynthesis and growth above ground in this area, whereas the below-ground soil had insufficient moisture for uptake through the roots because the high light intensity and temperature induced high evapotranspiration.Key words: Decline, evaportranspiration, light intensity, Quercus suber, sap flow density, water use efficiency
