    Macroscopic effects in attosecond pulse generation

    We examine how the generation and propagation of high-order harmonics in a partly ionized gas medium affect their strength and synchronization. The temporal properties of the resulting attosecond pulses generated in long gas targets can be significantly influenced by macroscopic effects, in particular by the intensity in the medium and the degree of ionization. Under some conditions, the use of gas targets longer than the absorption length can lead to the generation of self-compressed attosecond pulses. We show this effect experimentally, using long argon-filled gas cells as generating medium.Comment: 5 pages 4 figure

    Phase Measurement of Resonant Two-Photon Ionization in Helium

    We study resonant two-color two-photon ionization of Helium via the 1s3p 1P1 state. The first color is the 15th harmonic of a tunable titanium sapphire laser, while the second color is the fundamental laser radiation. Our method uses phase-locked high-order harmonics to determine the {\it phase} of the two-photon process by interferometry. The measurement of the two-photon ionization phase variation as a function of detuning from the resonance and intensity of the dressing field allows us to determine the intensity dependence of the transition energy.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, under consideratio

    Breeding range and abundance of White–winged Scoters (Melanitta fusca deglandi) have declined in northwestern North America. Hypotheses proposed to account for this trend are that survival and/or recruitment of females had declined. Thus, we used a reverse–time capture–recapture approach to directly estimate survival, seniority and capture probabilities for females of breeding age at Redberry Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada for 1975–1980 and 2000–2003. We also estimated population size of breeding females for 1975–1985 and 2000–2003 using capture–recapture data. Initially, this local population was in serious decline [95% CL ( ) = 0.89 ± 0.09], but has since stabilized and may be slowly increasing [95% CL ( ) = 1.07 ± 0.11]. This reversal in trajectory apparently resulted from increased recruitment rather than increased apparent survival. Importantly, recent recruitment of adult females appeared to be driven solely by immigration of adult females with no detectable in situ recruitment, suggesting a hypothesis that the local population is being rescued by females produced elsewhere.El rango reproductivo y la abundancia del negrón especulado (Melanitta fusca deglandi) han disminuido en la zona noroeste de América del Norte. La hipótesis propuesta para explicar esta tendencia es que se ha producido una disminución en la supervivencia y/o el reclutamiento de hembras. Por consiguiente, utilizamos un enfoque de captura–recaptura con el tiempo invertido para estimar directamente la supervivencia, la jerarquía y las probabilidades de captura de las hembras en edad reproductora del lago Redberry, Saskatchewan, Canadá, durante los periodos 1975–1980 y 2000– 2003. También estimamos el tamaño poblacional de las hembras reproductoras durante los periodos 1975–1985 y 2000–2003, mediante el empleo de datos de captura–recaptura. En un principio, esta población local experimentó una importante disminución [95% CL ( ) = 0,89 ± 0,09], pero posteriormente se estabilizó, y es posible que poco a poco vaya aumentando [95% CL ( ) = 1,07 ± 0,11]. Por lo visto, la inversión de esta trayectoria se produjo como consecuencia de un mayor reclutamiento, en lugar de una mayor supervivencia aparente. Es importante destacar que el reclutamiento reciente de hembras adultas parece haber obedecido exclusivamente a la migración de hembras adultas sin un reclutamiento detectable in situ, lo que sugiere la hipótesis de que la población local está siendo rescatada por hembras procedentes de otros lugares

    Probing single-photon ionization on the attosecond time scale

    We study photoionization of argon atoms excited by attosecond pulses using an interferometric measurement technique. We measure the difference in time delays between electrons emitted from the 3s23s^2 and from the 3p63p^6 shell, at different excitation energies ranging from 32 to 42 eV. The determination of single photoemission time delays requires to take into account the measurement process, involving the interaction with a probing infrared field. This contribution can be estimated using an universal formula and is found to account for a substantial fraction of the measured delay.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, under consideratio

    Hepatocyte growth factor in human osteoarthritic cartilage

    AbstractObjective Hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor is a potent mitogen, morphogen and motogen for a variety of mainly epithelial cells. Hepatocyte growth factor is synthesized by mesenchymal cells and can be found in various tissues. The objective of this study was to investigate the expression and distribution patterns of this pleiotropic growth factor and its receptor, the product of the proto-oncogene c-met in normal and osteoarthritic human knee cartilage.Methods Five normal and 14 osteoarthritic human cartilage samples graded histomorphologically by Mankin Score, were studied by radioactive in-situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry for the expression of Hepatocyte growth factor and the c-met receptor.Results Hepatocyte growth factor could be found by immunohistochemistry in the territorial matrix surrounding the chondrocytes of calcified cartilage and within the deep zone of normal cartilage. Chondrocytes of these cartilage zones showed also positive c-met receptor-staining. Moreover, a small number of chondrocytes in the superficial and intermediate zone showed c-met staining. In accordance with the increased hepatocyte growth factor staining of osteoarthritic cartilage, an enhanced expression of hepatocyte growth factor-RNA by chondrocytes of the deep zone as well as the deeper mid zone was observed. Contrary to normal cartilage,c-met was identified immunohistochemically in osteoarthritic chondrocytes of all cartilage zones.Conclusion These results indicate that hepatocyte growth factor seems to be acting in an autocrine/paracrine manner in normal and osteoarthritic cartilage. The ubiquitous presence of the HGF/HGF-receptor complex in osteoarthritic chondrocytes suggests that hepatocyte growth factor may contribute to the altered metabolism in osteoarthritic cartilage.{copy

    Continuous infusion of physostigmine in patients with perioperative septic shock: A pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic study with population pharmacokinetic modeling

    Background In the context of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, the clinical trial Anticholium® per Se (EudraCT Number: 2012-001650-26, ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03013322) addressed the possibility of taking adjunctive physostigmine salicylate treatment in septic shock from bench to bedside. Pharmacokinetics (PK) are likely altered in critically ill patients; data on physostigmine PK and target concentrations are sparse, particularly for continuous infusion. Our objective was to build a population PK (popPK) model for physostigmine, and further evaluate pharmacodynamics (PD) and concentration-response relationship in this setting. Methods In the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 20 patients with perioperative septic shock either received an initial dose of 0.04 mg/kg physostigmine salicylate, followed by continuous infusion of 1 mg/h for up to 120 h, or equivalent volumes of 0.9% sodium chloride (placebo group). Physostigmine plasma concentrations and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were measured; concentration-response associations were evaluated, and popPK and PD modeling was performed with NONMEM. Results Steady state physostigmine plasma concentrations reached 7.60 ± 2.81 ng/mL (mean ± standard deviation [SD]). PK was best described by a two-compartment model with linear clearance. Significant covariate effects were detected for body weight and age on clearance, as well as a high inter-individual variability of the central volume of distribution. AChE activity was significantly reduced to 30.5%–50.6% of baseline activity during physostigmine salicylate infusion. A sigmoidal direct effect PD model best described enzyme inhibition by physostigmine, with an estimated half maximal effective concentration (EC50) of 5.99 ng/mL. Conclusions PK of physostigmine in patients with septic shock displayed substantial inter-individual variability with body weight and age influencing the clearance. Physostigmine inhibited AChE activity with a sigmoidal concentration-response effect

    Intensity Dependence of Laser-Assisted Attosecond Photoionization Spectra

    We study experimentally the influence of the intensity of the infrared (IR) probe field on attosecond pulse train (APT) phase measurements performed with the RABITT method (Reconstruction of Attosecond Beating by Interference in Two-Photon Transitions). We find that if a strong IR field is applied, the attosecond pulses will appear to have lower-than-actual chirp rates. We also observe the onset of the streaking regime in the breakdown of the weak-field RABITT conditions. We perform a Fourier-analysis of harmonic and sideband continuum states and show that the mutual phase relation of the harmonics can be extracted from higher Fourier components.Comment: preprint to article in Laser Physics Nikolai B.
