Comments on Sweeny and Gliozzi dynamics for simulations of Potts models in the Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation
We compare the correlation times of the Sweeny and Gliozzi dynamics for
two-dimensional Ising and three-state Potts models, and the three-dimensional
Ising model for the simulations in the percolation prepresentation. The results
are also compared with Swendsen-Wang and Wolff cluster dynamics. It is found
that Sweeny and Gliozzi dynamics have essentially the same dynamical critical
behavior. Contrary to Gliozzi's claim (cond-mat/0201285), the Gliozzi dynamics
has critical slowing down comparable to that of other cluster methods. For the
two-dimensional Ising model, both Sweeny and Gliozzi dynamics give good fits to
logarithmic size dependences; for two-dimensional three-state Potts model,
their dynamical critical exponent z is 0.49(1); the three-dimensional Ising

Auger Recombination in Semiconductor Quantum Wells
The principal mechanisms of Auger recombination of nonequilibrium carriers in
semiconductor heterostructures with quantum wells are investigated. It is shown
for the first time that there exist three fundamentally different Auger
recombination mechanisms of (i) thresholdless, (ii) quasi-threshold, and (iii)
threshold types. The rate of the thresholdless Auger process depends on
temperature only slightly. The rate of the quasi-threshold Auger process
depends on temperature exponentially. However, its threshold energy essentially
varies with quantum well width and is close to zero for narrow quantum wells.
It is shown that the thresholdless and the quasi-threshold Auger processes
dominate in narrow quantum wells, while the threshold and the quasi-threshold
processes prevail in wide quantum wells. The limiting case of a
three-dimensional (3D)Auger process is reached for infinitely wide quantum
wells. The critical quantum well width is found at which the quasi-threshold
and threshold Auger processes merge into a single 3D Auger process. Also
studied is phonon-assisted Auger recombination in quantum wells. It is shown
that for narrow quantum wells the act of phonon emission becomes resonant,
which in turn increases substantially the coefficient of phonon-assisted Auger
recombination. Conditions are found under which the direct Auger process
dominates over the phonon-assisted Auger recombination at various temperatures

The Percolation Signature of the Spin Glass Transition
Magnetic ordering at low temperature for Ising ferromagnets manifests itself
within the associated Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) random cluster representation as
the occurrence of a single positive density percolating network. In this paper
we investigate the percolation signature for Ising spin glass ordering -- both
in short-range (EA) and infinite-range (SK) models -- within a two-replica FK
representation and also within the different Chayes-Machta-Redner two-replica
graphical representation. Based on numerical studies of the EA model in
three dimensions and on rigorous results for the SK model, we conclude that the
spin glass transition corresponds to the appearance of {\it two} percolating
clusters of {\it unequal} densities.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
On the Coupling Time of the Heat-Bath Process for the Fortuin–Kasteleyn Random–Cluster Model
We consider the coupling from the past implementation of the random-cluster
heat-bath process, and study its random running time, or coupling time. We
focus on hypercubic lattices embedded on tori, in dimensions one to three, with
cluster fugacity at least one. We make a number of conjectures regarding the
asymptotic behaviour of the coupling time, motivated by rigorous results in one
dimension and Monte Carlo simulations in dimensions two and three. Amongst our
findings, we observe that, for generic parameter values, the distribution of
the appropriately standardized coupling time converges to a Gumbel
distribution, and that the standard deviation of the coupling time is
asymptotic to an explicit universal constant multiple of the relaxation time.
Perhaps surprisingly, we observe these results to hold both off criticality,
where the coupling time closely mimics the coupon collector's problem, and also
at the critical point, provided the cluster fugacity is below the value at
which the transition becomes discontinuous. Finally, we consider analogous
questions for the single-spin Ising heat-bath process
The Role of Uncertainty, Worry, and Control in Well-Being: Evidence From the COVID-19 Outbreak and Pandemic in U.S. and China
Uncertainty about the future often leads to worries about what the future will bring, which can have negative consequences for health and well-being. However, if worry can act as a motivator to promote efforts to prevent undesirable future outcomes, those negative consequences of worry may be mitigated. In this article, we apply a novel model of uncertainty, worry, and perceived control to predict psychological and physical well-being among four samples collected in China (Study 1; during the early COVID-19 outbreak in China) and the United States (Studies 2–4, during 4 weeks in May 2020, 4 weeks in November 2020, and crosssectionally between April and November 2020). Grounded in the feeling-is-for-doing approach to emotions, we hypothesized (and found) that uncertainty about one’s COVID-19 risk would predict greater worry about the virus and one’s risk of contracting it, and that greater worry would in turn predict poorer well-being. We also hypothesized, and found somewhat mixed evidence, that perceptions of control over 1’s COVID-19 risk moderated the relationship between worry and well-being such that worry was related to diminished well-being when people felt they lacked control over their risk for contracting the virus. This study is one of the first to demonstrate an indirect path from uncertainty to well-being via worry and to demonstrate the role of control in moderating whether uncertainty and worry manifest in poor well-being
Double Blind Study Investigating the Effect of Different Voice Prostheses on Ease of Swallowing and Residue Post Laryngectomy.
Voice prostheses have been examined for their effect on voice production but there is little datum on their effect on swallow function. This study investigated the difference between six commonly available voice prostheses in terms of swallowing. Laryngectomy patients had up to six voice prostheses placed in a random order over two visits. Swallowing was evaluated for each prosthesis using FEES (Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing). After each prosthesis trial, patients self-evaluated their experience of swallowing. Three independent experts indicated which prosthesis they considered best for swallowing for each patient and judged residue on the voice prosthesis and in the upper esophagus. Raters were blinded to participant details, voice prosthesis type and scores of other raters. On patient self-evaluation, scores were equally distributed across all prostheses for swallowing. Experts most frequently chose the Blom Singer Low pressure and Blom Singer Classic Indwelling voice prostheses as best for swallowing but consensus was poor for most patients. Experts found that the Blom Singer Classic Indwelling and the Provox Vega had least residue on the voice prosthesis on thin liquid (p ≤ 0.001) and soft (p = 0.001), respectively. Experts also found that the Blom Singer Low Pressure had least residue in the upper esophagus on soft consistency (p ≤ 0.001). While self-evaluation by patients did not identify a consistently preferred prosthesis for swallow, many patients expressed personal preferences, suggesting benefits to involving patients in the choice of prosthesis. Some voice prostheses may be associated with lower levels of residue on the prosthesis and upper esophagus with certain consistencies

Spatio-Temporal Patterns of Barmah Forest Virus Disease in Queensland, Australia
Background Barmah Forest virus (BFV) disease is a common and wide-spread mosquito-borne disease in Australia. This study investigated the spatio-temporal patterns of BFV disease in Queensland, Australia using geographical information system (GIS) tools and geostatistical analysis. Methods/Principal Findings We calculated the incidence rates and standardised incidence rates of BFV disease. Moran's I statistic was used to assess the spatial autocorrelation of BFV incidences. Spatial dynamics of BFV disease was examined using semi-variogram analysis. Interpolation techniques were applied to visualise and display the spatial distribution of BFV disease in statistical local areas (SLAs) throughout Queensland. Mapping of BFV disease by SLAs reveals the presence of substantial spatio-temporal variation over time. Statistically significant differences in BFV incidence rates were identified among age groups (χ2 = 7587, df = 7327,p<0.01). There was a significant positive spatial autocorrelation of BFV incidence for all four periods, with the Moran's I statistic ranging from 0.1506 to 0.2901 (p<0.01). Semi-variogram analysis and smoothed maps created from interpolation techniques indicate that the pattern of spatial autocorrelation was not homogeneous across the state. Conclusions/Significance This is the first study to examine spatial and temporal variation in the incidence rates of BFV disease across Queensland using GIS and geostatistics. The BFV transmission varied with age and gender, which may be due to exposure rates or behavioural risk factors. There are differences in the spatio-temporal patterns of BFV disease which may be related to local socio-ecological and environmental factors. These research findings may have implications in the BFV disease control and prevention programs in Queensland
Gaze following in multiagent contexts: Evidence for a quorum-like principle
Research shows that humans spontaneously follow another individual’s gaze. However, little remains known on how they respond when multiple gaze cues diverge across members of a social group. To address this question, we presented participants with displays depicting three (Experiment 1) or five (Experiment 2) agents showing diverging social cues. In a three-person group, one individual looking at the target (33% of the group) was sufficient to elicit gaze-facilitated target responses. With a five-person group, however, three individuals looking at the target (60% of the group) were necessary to produce the same effect. Gaze following in small groups therefore appears to be based on a quorum-like principle, whereby the critical level of social information needed for gaze following is determined by a proportion of consistent social cues scaled as a function of group size. As group size grows, greater agreement is needed to evoke joint attention
A Percolation-Theoretic Approach to Spin Glass Phase Transitions
The magnetically ordered, low temperature phase of Ising ferro- magnets is
manifested within the associated Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) random cluster
representation by the occurrence of a single positive density percolating
cluster. In this paper, we review our recent work on the percolation signature
for Ising spin glass ordering -- both in the short-range Edwards-Anderson (EA)
and infinite-range Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) models -- within a two-replica
FK representation and also in the different Chayes-Machta-Redner two-replica
graphical representation. Numerical studies of the EA model in
dimension three and rigorous results for the SK model are consistent in
supporting the conclusion that the signature of spin-glass order in these
models is the existence of a single percolating cluster of maximal density
