The Forgotten Stage of Forest Succession: Early-Successional Ecosystems on Forest Sites
Early-successional forest ecosystems that develop after stand-replacing or partial disturbances are diverse in species, processes, and structure. Post-disturbance ecosystems are also often rich in biological legacies, including surviving organisms and organically derived structures, such as woody debris. These legacies and post-disturbance plant communities provide resources that attract and sustain high species diversity, including numerous early-successional obligates, such as certain woodpeckers and arthropods. Early succession is the only period when tree canopies do not dominate the forest site, and so this stage can be characterized by high productivity of plant species (including herbs and shrubs), complex food webs, large nutrient fluxes, and high structural and spatial complexity. Different disturbances contrast markedly in terms of biological legacies, and this will influence the resultant physical and biological conditions, thus affecting successional pathways. Management activities, such as post-disturbance logging and dense tree planting, can reduce the richness within and the duration of early-successional ecosystems. Where maintenance of biodiversity is an objective, the importance and value of these natural early-successional ecosystems are underappreciated

Complementary Patents and Market Structure
Many high technology goods are based on standards that require several essential patents owned by different IP holders. This gives rise to a complements and a double mark-up problem. We compare the welfare effects of two different business strategies dealing with these problems. Vertical integration of an IP holder and a downstream producer solves the double mark-up problem between these firms. Nevertheless, it may raise royalty rates and reduce output as compared to non-integration. Horizontal integration of IP holders solves the complements problem but not the double mark-up problem. On Deusons or Deuteronlike Meson-Meson Bound States
The systematics of deuteronlike two-meson bound states, {\it deusons}, is
discussed. Previous arguments that many of the present non- states are
such states are elaborated including, in particular, the tensor potential. For
pseudoscalar states the important observation is made that the centrifugal
barrier from the P-wave can be overcome by the and terms of the
tensor potential. In the heavy meson sector one-pion exchange alone is strong
enough to form at least deuteron-like and composites
bound by approximately 50 MeV, while and states are

Issues and Opportunities in Exotic Hadrons
The last few years have been witness to a proliferation of new results
concerning heavy exotic hadrons. Experimentally, many new signals have been
discovered that could be pointing towards the existence of tetraquarks,
pentaquarks, and other exotic configurations of quarks and gluons.
Theoretically, advances in lattice field theory techniques place us at the cusp
of understanding complex coupled-channel phenomena, modelling grows more
sophisticated, and effective field theories are being applied to an ever
greater range of situations. It is thus an opportune time to evaluate the
status of the field. In the following, a series of high priority experimental

Parameters associated with efficacy of epidural steroid injections in the management of postherpetic neuralgia: the Mayo Clinic experience
Purpose: Thirty percent of patients with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) receiving conservative treatment report unsatisfactory pain relief. Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are commonly used as a therapeutic intervention in these patients. In this study, we aimed to determine if there are variables that predict the efficacy of ESI in patients with PHN. Patients and methods: We retrospectively identified patients seen at Mayo Clinic who had PHN and received ESI. From their medical records, we abstracted the demographic variables, concurrent medication use, anatomic approach and medication for ESI, and degree of pain relief at 2 and 12 weeks' postintervention. Results: None of the studied variables were significantly associated with efficacy of ESI in patients with PHN. PHN that began < 11 months before treatment was predictive of a response to ESI at 12 weeks postintervention (positive predictive value, 55%). Patients who reported poor ESI efficacy 2 weeks after the intervention had a 94% chance of still having pain at 12 weeks. Conclusion: For this cohort of patients with PHN being treated with ESI, no demographic characteristics, concurrently used medications, or type of ESI were associated with ESI treatment efficacy at 2 or 12 weeks after the intervention.Open Access JournalThis item from the UA Faculty Publications collection is made available by the University of Arizona with support from the University of Arizona Libraries.
