Determinants of Participation versus Consumption in the Nordic Swan Eco-labeled Market
This paper uses data on purchases of Nordic Swan Eco-labeled toilet paper and paper towels by individual Danish households to analyze the determinants of demand for eco-labeled goods and the decision process underlying it. Among several models that are estimated, a double-hurdle model that distinguishes between factors influencing the discrete decision to participate by purchasing an eco-labeled good and the continuous decision about the quantity of the eco-labeled good to be purchased is found to fit the data best. We find that prices as well as consumer tastes and preferences, proxied by their socio-demographic characteristics, have a much stronger impact on the participation decision than on quantity consumed for both Swan-labeled toilet paper and paper towels. The quantity consumed of Swan-labeled goods, on the other hand, is strongly affected by factors such as availability of Swan goods in shops, discount sales on Swan goods, and household size.Environmental Economics and Policy,
Ramification theory for varieties over a local field
We define generalizations of classical invariants of wild ramification for
coverings on a variety of arbitrary dimension over a local field. For an l-adic
sheaf, we define its Swan class as a 0-cycle class supported on the wild
ramification locus. We prove a formula of Riemann-Roch type for the Swan
conductor of cohomology together with its relative version, assuming that the
local field is of mixed characteristic.
We also prove the integrality of the Swan class for curves over a local field
as a generalization of the Hasse-Arf theorem. We derive a proof of a conjecture
of Serre on the Artin character for a group action with an isolated fixed point
on a regular local ring, assuming the dimension is 2.Comment: 159 pages, some corrections are mad
The origin of peculiar molecular bands in cool DQ white dwarfs
The DQ white dwarfs are stars whose atmosphere is enriched with carbon, which
for cool stars () is indicated by the Swan bands of
in the optical part of their spectra. With decreasing effective
temperature these molecular bands undergo a significant blueshift (). The origin of this phenomenon has been disputed over the last
two decades and has remained unknown. We attempt to address this problem by
investigating the impact of dense helium on the spectroscopic properties of
molecular carbon under the physical conditions encountered inside helium-rich,
fluid-like atmospheres of cool DQ white dwarfs. We found that the electronic
transition energy increases monotonically with the helium density
(). This causes
the Swan absorption to occur at shorter wavelengths compared with unperturbed
. On the other hand the pressure-induced increase in the vibrational
frequency is insufficient to account for the observed Swan bands shifts. This
is consistent with the observations and indicates that the observed Swan-like
molecular bands are most likely the pressure-shifted bands of .Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A letter
Analysis of the C (d-a) Swan bands as a thermometric probe in CO microwave plasmas
The optical emission spectra of high pressure CO microwave plasmas are
usually dominated by the C Swan bands. In this paper, the use of the C
Swan bands for estimating the gas temperature in CO microwave plasmas is
assessed. State by state fitting is employed to check the correctness of
assuming a Boltzmann distribution for the rotational and vibrational
distribution functions and, within statistical and systematic uncertainties,
the C Swan band can be fitted accurately with a single temperature for
rotational and vibrational levels. The processes leading to the production of
the C molecule and particularly its d state are briefly reviewed
as well as collisional relaxation times of the latter. It is concluded that its
rotational temperature can be associated to the gas temperature of the CO
microwave plasma and the results are moreover cross-checked by adding a small
amount of N in the discharge and measuring the CN violet band system. The
2.45~GHz plasma source is analyzed in the pressure range 180-925~mbar, for
input microwave powers ranging from 0.9 - 3 kW and with gas flow rates of
5-100~L/min. An intense C Swan bands emission spectrum can be measured only
when the plasma is operated in contracted regime. A unique temperature of about
6000 500 K is obtained for all investigated conditions. A spectroscopic
database is constructed using the recent compilation and calculations by Brooke
et al. \cite{BROOKE201311} of the line strengths and molecular constants for
the C (d-a) Swan bands system and made available as
