Moving from Inaction to Action: Challenging Homo- and Transphobia in Middle School English Language Arts
What happens when teachers have opportunities to engage in LGBTQ-affirming practices but choose not to? In the following paper, the authors present a vignette from a middle school context and consider ways to challenge silences to support LGBTQ students in middle school English classrooms. The authors provide discussion and resources to help teachers engage in LGBTQ affirming practices with middle school students
Low Energy Effective Action in N=2 Yang-Mills as an Integrated Anomaly
Based on chiral ring relations and anomalies, as described by Cachazo,
Douglas, Seiberg and Witten, we argue that the holomorphic effective action in
N=2 Yang-Mills theory can be understood as an integrated U(1) anomaly from a
purely field theory point of view. In particular, we show that the periods of
the Riemann surface arising from the generalized Konishi anomaly can be given a
physical interpretation without referring to special geometry. We also discuss
consequences for the multi-instanton calculus in N=2 Yang-Mills theory.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures ; v2: reference adde
Axiverse and Black Hole
String theory/M-theory generally predicts that axionic fields with a broad
mass spectrum extending below 10^{-10}eV are produced after compactification to
four dimensions. These axions/fields provoke a rich variety of cosmophysical
phenomena on different scales depending on their masses and provide us new
windows to probe the ultimate theory. In this article, after overviewing this
axiverse idea, I take up the black hole instability as the most fascinating one
among such axionic phenomena and explain its physical mechanism and
astrophysical predictions.Comment: References added; 32 pages, 24 figures. Based on the lecture at the

Compactification of IIB Theory with Fluxes and Axion-Dilaton String Cosmology
Compactification of type IIB theory on torus, in the presence of fluxes, is
considered. The reduced effective action is expressed in manifestly S-duality
invariant form. Cosmological solutions of the model are discussed in several
cases in the Pre-Big Bang scenario.Comment: 22 page
Semiconducting quantum confined silicon-tin alloyed nanocrystals prepared by ns pulsed laser ablation in water
In this letter we demonstrate the material synthetic feasibility for semiconducting alloyed silicon-tin nanocrystals (SiSn-ncs) with quantum confinement effects. An environmentally friendly synthesis is achieved by ns laser ablation of SiSn amorphous target in water at ambient conditions. Plasmas generated in liquid by laser pulses are characterized by spatial confinement with very high pressure (GPa), which allowed the growth of SiSn-ncs via kinetic pathways. We further illustrate that surface engineering by a direct-current atmospheric-pressure microplasma is capable of tailoring SiSn-ncs surface properties without the need of lengthy surfactants and resulting in room temperature photoluminescence (PL); the PL peak wavelength is red-shifted by more than 250 nm with respect to the PL peak wavelengths observed for comparable elemental silicon nanocrystals
Dark Matter and LHC: What is the Connection?
We review what can (and cannot) be learned if dark matter is detected in one
or more experiments, emphasizing the importance of combining LHC data with
direct, astrophysical and cosmological probes of dark matter. We briefly review
the conventional picture of a thermally produced WIMP relic density and its
connection with theories of electroweak symmetry breaking. We then discuss both
experimental and theoretical reasons why one might generically expect this
picture to fail. If this is the case, we argue that a combined effort bringing
together all types of data -- combined with explicitly constructed theoretical
models -- will be the only way to achieve a complete understanding of the dark
matter in our universe and become confident that any candidate actually
provides the relic density.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures, Invited review for Modern Physics Letters
