New Radiocarbon Dates for the Baden Culture
In 2001-2002, a settlement of the Baden culture was excavated in the vicinity of Balatonőszd. During the rescue excavation along the M7 highway, in an area of 100,000 m2, 2800 pits dug into the subsoil, 320 hearths, and cultural layers rich in material were discovered. The material of the Baden culture represents phases IB-IC (Boleraz), IIA (Transitional), IIB-III (Early Classical) according to Němejcov-Pavkov's (1981, 1998) typological system. We took 20 samples from the large number of human and animal skeletons for radiocarbon dating, of which 16 measurements were successful. These results provide absolute dates for a Baden culture settlement with the longest occupation and the largest excavated surface in Hungary. This provides an opportunity to review the chronological position of the Baden culture, with special emphasis on its beginning and end.The Radiocarbon archives are made available by Radiocarbon and the University of Arizona Libraries. Results of Radiocarbon Analysis of Upper Weichselian Loess Sequences from Hungary
From the 19th International Radiocarbon Conference held in Keble College, Oxford, England, April 3-7, 2006.Approximately 10% of Hungary is covered by dust sequences of the Quaternary period. Samples have been taken from more than 50 outcrops and boreholes during fieldwork in the past 20 yr. Some 81 bulk samples taken from 27 profiles of the Hungarian loess regions have been analyzed for radiocarbon. Based on the 14C results, loess layers that accumulated between 33,000 and 12,000 BP were selected for further investigation. The sedimentation rates of the 27 loess profiles suggest periods of slow and quick dust accumulation in the Carpathian Basin during the Upper Weichselian period. It seems to us that some soil development and intense weathering periods interrupted the loess development during the Upper Weichselian in Hungary. According to the 14C dates, the estimated average rate of sedimentation was 0.31 mm/yr in both the northern and southern parts of the Carpathian Basin between 33,000 and 12,000 BP.The Radiocarbon archives are made available by Radiocarbon and the University of Arizona Libraries. Duration of Tell Settlements at Four Prehistoric Sites in Hungary
From the 16th International Radiocarbon Conference held in Gronigen, Netherlands, June 16-20, 1997.The chief objective of this paper is to improve our understanding of the Neolithic in eastern Hungary using absolute chronological data. To accomplish this we calibrated new measurements as well as previously published dates. The up-to-date, standardized evaluation of 147 calibrated measurements showed temporal overlaps between archaeological cultures defined on the basis of ceramic styles. The average timespan of tell settlements of 285 yr was obtained using radiocarbon dates from four major settlements in eastern Hungary: Berettyóújfalu-Herpály, Hódmezóvásáhely-Gorzsa-Cukortanya, Öcsöd-Kováshalom and Polgár-Csószhalom.This material was digitized as part of a cooperative project between Radiocarbon and the University of Arizona Libraries.The Radiocarbon archives are made available by Radiocarbon and the University of Arizona Libraries.
