Clinical applications of calixarene based sodium-selective electrodes

Since their beginnings in the late 1960's ion-selective electrodes have rapidly become one of the most important types of chemical sensor. They are commercially available for a large variety of ions, are widely used and have been characterised thoroughly by many investigators. Having attained this level of sophistication, research in this area today is often directed towards novel applications of such sensors. This thesis represents a study of certain clinical applications of sodium-selective electrodes. As ion-selective electrodes possess the ability to directly sense analytes, they are well suited to whole blood, plasma and serum critical analyte testing. These critical analytes are major electrolytes, blood gases and some metabolites. Analysers based on ion-selective electrodes can provide fast turn-around time for critical care testing. With this in mind, a flow injection analysis system has been developed for the determination of sodium in blood samples. Here, the advantages of flow injection analysis and potentiometric detection were combined with those of computer control, to produce a blood analyser which has the potential to be user friendly, analytically reliable, portable and applicable to continuous monitoring. Following this research, our attention turned to solid-state devices. Here, one opens up the possibility of mass fabrication of miniature, disposable, planar electrodes. Our efforts concentrated on the development of a potentiometric device, consisting of a solid-state sodium selective electrode and a solid-state chloride electrode. The device is based on a combination of screen printed Ag/AgCl electrodes and an ion-selective PVC membrane electrode. It was developed for use as a screening tool for Cystic Fibrosis, utilising the raised sodium level in sweat, which is a diagnostic indicator for the condition

The Born Global Entrepreneur In Emerging Economies

As emerging economies increasingly participate in the global economy, Born Global firms from these countries are becoming significant players as well. In the literature, topics related to Born Global firms from emerging economies have mostly been overlooked. The purpose of this paper is to address part of this gap by studying the Born Global entrepreneur within the context of an emerging market. Specifically, the Born Global entrepreneur’s knowledge and behaviors required to start a Born Global firm in an emerging market as well as the success factors in the global marketplace are examined

    Digital Assets and Fiduciaries

This chapter addresses the appropriate treatment of a person\u27s digital life when the account holder can no longer manage it. As the Internet becomes an increasingly important presence in our daily lives, the law has a significant role to play in determining the management of digital assets upon the account holder\u27s incapacity or death. In the past, people put hard copies of photos in albums, listened to record albums, and paid bills with a stamped envelope. Today, most people use the Internet to store photos, listen to music, and pay bills. Yet few people have considered how to dispose of their digital assets. This chapter explores the legal issues for trusts, estates, conservatorships, and powers of attorney. It addresses the importance of fiduciaries being able to manage an account holder\u27s digital assets, and the obstacles under federal and state law to a fiduciary assuming that role. Finally, it shows how the Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act provides a solution to ensure effectuation of the account holder\u27s intent

The rinceau design, the minor arts and the St. Louis Psalter

The Saint Louis Psalter (Bibliothque National MS Lat. 10525) is an unusual and intriguing manuscript. Created between 1250 and 1270, it is a prayer book designed for the private devotions of King Louis IX of France and features 78 illustrations of Old Testament scenes set in an ornate architectural setting. Surrounding these elements is a heavy, multicolored border that uses a repeating pattern of a leaf encircled by vines, called a rinceau. When compared to the complete corpus of mid-13th century art, the Saint Louis Psalter's rinceau design has its origin outside the manuscript tradition, from architectural decoration and metalwork and not other manuscripts. This research aims to enhance our understanding of Gothic art and the interrelationship between various media of art and the creation of the complete artistic experience in the High Gothic period

Bibliographic Management by Humanities Graduate Students

This study describes a series of interviews with humanities graduate students at UNC Chapel Hill. The interviews were conducted to determine ways in which humanities graduate students managed references for their academic papers. Thirteen graduate students in the fields of art history, classics and history were interviewed for an hour on the methods in which they manage bibliographic information, their exposure to technology growing up, reasons for changing or not changing methods, and the influence of others on that decision. The results of these open-ended interviews are useful in forming the basis for a more comprehensive study of bibliographic management by humanities graduate students by librarians so that better service can be offered to this population
