Control Rumex obtusifolius L. by Manipulating Grass Seeding Rate for Re-Establishment of Pasture
For the renovation of deteriorated pastures O\\\u27ing to the invasion of Rumex obtusifollus L. sprout, manipulation of seeding rate of pasture plants was Investigated to reduce R. obtusifolius. In an autumn-sown sward, Loilum perenne L. was sown at 100, 300, 600, 1000 and 2000 g/a, Dactylis glomerata L. at 600 gta, and a mixture of 6 species were sown together with SO g/a of R, obtusifolius. Plant density and dry weight of R. obtusifolius declined clearly at high rates (1000 and 2000 g/a) of L. perenne compared with low rates, though this difference was likely to disappear with time after sowing. Although this high seeding manipulation costs more, it would be one of the alternatives for renovating pastures infested with R. obtusifolius seeds
Non-Gaussianity in the modulated reheating scenario
We investigate the non-Gaussianity of primordial curvature perturbation in
the modulated reheating scenario where the primordial perturbation is generated
due to the spacial fluctuation of the inflaton decay rate to radiation. We use
the formalism to evaluate the trispectrum of curvature perturbation
as well as its bispectrum. We give expressions for three non-linear parameters
and in the modulated reheating scenario. If the
intrinsic non-Gaussianity of scalar field fluctuations and third derivative of
the decay rate with respect to scalar fields are negligibly small, has
at least the same order of magnitude as . We also give general
inequality between and which is true for other
inflationary scenarios as long as primordial non-Gaussianity comes from
super-horizon evolution.Comment: references adde
Curvature perturbation from velocity modulation
We propose a new variant model of the modulated reheating. If particles have
large scale fluctuations on their velocities, or equivalently their Lorentz
factors, the decay rate also fluctuates and the curvature perturbation is
induced via their decay processes in analogy with modulated reheating. For
example, if they are produced nonthermally by the decay of another field with
its mass fluctuating on large scales, such a situation is realized. We
explicitly calculate the resulting curvature perturbation and non-linearity
parameters and show that the effect of velocity-modulation is not negligible if
the particles are semi-relativistic at the decay.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures; minor correction; to appear in Phys.Rev.
Scattering of Gravitational Waves by the Weak Gravitational Fields of Lens Objects
We consider the scattering of the gravitational waves by the weak
gravitational fields of lens objects. We obtain the scattered gravitational
waveform by treating the gravitational potential of the lens to first order,
i.e. using the Born approximation. We find that the effect of scattering on the
waveform is roughly given by the Schwarzschild radius of the lens divided by
the wavelength of gravitational wave for a compact lens object. If the lenses
are smoothly distributed, the effect of scattering is of the order of the
convergence field along the line of sight to the source. In the short
wavelength limit, the amplitude is magnified by , which is consistent
with the result in weak gravitational lensing.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, A&A Letters, in press, minor changes, references

Finding cell-specific expression patterns in the early Ciona embryo with single-cell RNA-seq
Single-cell RNA-seq has been established as a reliable and accessible technique enabling new types of analyses, such as identifying cell types and studying spatial and temporal gene expression variation and change at single-cell resolution. Recently, single-cell RNA-seq has been applied to developing embryos, which offers great potential for finding and characterising genes controlling the course of development along with their expression patterns. In this study, we applied single-cell RNA-seq to the 16-cell stage of the Ciona embryo, a marine chordate and performed a computational search for cell-specific gene expression patterns. We recovered many known expression patterns from our single-cell RNA-seq data and despite extensive previous screens, we succeeded in finding new cell-specific patterns, which we validated by in situ and single-cell qPCR

The production of copper phthalocyanine and/or its derivatives
This document discusses the production of copper phthalocyanine and/or its derivatives, which are useful for dye pigments. The method described uses urea, a copper compound and/or a catalyst which have been suspended in an inert reaction medium. The copper compound, catalyst and urea fused and the reaction is performed by using the obtained fusion. The advantages of the invention are listed
Higher Order Corrections to the Primordial Gravitational Wave Spectrum and its Impact on Parameter Estimates for Inflation
We study the impact of the use of the power series expression for the
primordial tensor spectrum on parameter estimation from future direct detection
gravitational wave experiments. The spectrum approximated by the power series
expansion may give large deviation from the true (fiducial) value when it is
normalized at CMB scale because of the large separation between CMB and direct
detection scales. We derive the coefficients of the higher order terms of the
expansion up to the sixth order within the framework of the slow-roll
approximation and investigate how well the inclusion of higher order terms
improves the analytic prediction of the spectrum amplitude by comparing with
numerical results. Using the power series expression, we consider future
constraints on inflationary parameters expected from direct detection
experiments of the inflationary gravitational wave background and show that the
truncation of the higher order terms can lead to incorrect evaluation of the
parameters. We present two example models; a quadratic chaotic inflation model
and mixed inflaton and curvaton model with a quartic inflaton potential.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, revised version accepted by JCA
Closed String Tachyons and Semi-Classical Instabilities
We conjecture that the end point of bulk closed string tachyon decay at any
non-zero coupling, is the annihilation of space time by Witten's bubble of
nothing, resulting in a topological phase of the theory. In support of this we
present a variety of situations in which there is a correspondence between the
existence of perturbative tachyons in one regime and the semi-classical
annihilation of space-time. Our discussion will include many recently
investigated scenarios in string theory including Scherk-Schwarz
compactifications, Melvin magnetic backgrounds, and noncompact orbifolds. We
use this conjecture to investigate a possible web of dualities relating the
eleven-dimensional Fabinger-Horava background with nonsupersymmetric string
theories. Along the way we point out where our conjecture resolves some of the
puzzles associated with bulk closed string tachyon condensation.Comment: 31 pages, 5 figures 3 figures added, typos corrected and references

Association of Over-The-Counter Pharmaceutical Sales with Influenza-Like-Illnesses to Patient Volume in an Urgent Care Setting
We studied the association between OTC pharmaceutical sales and volume of patients with influenza-like-illnesses (ILI) at an urgent care center over one year. OTC pharmaceutical sales explain 36% of the variance in the patient volume, and each standard deviation increase is associated with 4.7 more patient visits to the urgent care center (p<0.0001). Cross-correlation function analysis demonstrated that OTC pharmaceutical sales are significantly associated with patient volume during non-flu season (p<0.0001), but only the sales of cough and cold (p<0.0001) and thermometer (p<0.0001) categories were significant during flu season with a lag of two and one days, respectively. Our study is the first study to demonstrate and measure the relationship between OTC pharmaceutical sales and urgent care center patient volume, and presents strong evidence that OTC sales predict urgent care center patient volume year round. © 2013 Liu et al
