    We generalize the dimensionally reduced Yang-Mills matrix model by adding d=1 Chern-Simons term and terms for a bosonic vector. The coefficient, \kappa of the Chern-Simons term must be integer, and hence the level structure. We show at the bottom of the Yang-Mills potential, the low energy limit, only the linear motion is allowed for D0 particles. Namely all the particles align themselves on a single straight line subject to \kappa^2/r^2 repulsive potential from each other.     GAPS IN THE HEISENBERG-ISING MODEL

    We report on the closing of gaps in the ground state of the critical Heisenberg-Ising chain at momentum π\pi. For half-filling, the gap closes at special values of the anisotropy Δ=cos(π/Q)\Delta= \cos(\pi/Q), QQ integer. We explain this behavior with the help of the Bethe Ansatz and show that the gap scales as a power of the system size with variable exponent depending on Δ\Delta. We use a finite-size analysis to calculate this exponent in the critical region, supplemented by perturbation theory at Δ0\Delta\sim 0. For rational 1/r1/r fillings, the gap is shown to be closed for {\em all} values of Δ\Delta and the corresponding perturbation expansion in Δ\Delta shows a remarkable cancellation of various diagrams.Comment: 12 RevTeX pages + 4 figures upon reques

    We present results of a self-consistent model of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of starburst galaxies. Two parameters control the IR SED, the mean pressure in the ISM and the destruction timescale of molecular clouds. Adding a simplified AGN spectrum provides mixing lines on IRAS color : color diagrams.     Polarization dependence of the two-photon Franz-Keldysh effect

    The effect of a constant electric field on two-photon absorption in a direct band gap semiconductor is calculated using an independent-particle theory. Two band structure models for GaAs are used: a two-band parabolic model and an eight-band "k dot p" model. Both predict a strong dependence of the two-photon electroabsorption spectrum on the polarization of the light with respect to the constant field. We attribute the polarization dependence to the strong effect of a constant field on intraband dynamics.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    Short-timescale Fluctuations in the Difference Light Curves of QSO 0957+561A,B: Microlensing or Noise?

    From optical R band data of the double quasar QSO 0957+561A,B, we made two new difference light curves (about 330 days of overlap between the time-shifted light curve for the A image and the magnitude-shifted light curve for the B image). We observed noisy behaviours around the zero line and no short-timescale events (with a duration of months), where the term event refers to a prominent feature that may be due to microlensing or another source of variability. Only one event lasting two weeks and rising - 33 mmag was found. Measured constraints on the possible microlensing variability can be used to obtain information on the granularity of the dark matter in the main lensing galaxy and the size of the source. In addition, one can also test the ability of the observational noise to cause the rms averages and the local features of the difference signals. We focused on this last issue. The combined photometries were related to a process consisting of an intrinsic signal plus a Gaussian observational noise. The intrinsic signal has been assumed to be either a smooth function (polynomial) or a smooth function plus a stationary noise process or a correlated stationary process. Using these three pictures without microlensing, we derived some models totally consistent with the observations. We finally discussed the sensitivity of our telescope (at Teide Observatory) to several classes of microlensing variability.Comment: MNRAS, in press (LaTeX, 14 pages, 22 eps figures

    Inactivation of Plasmodium falciparum in whole blood by riboflavin plus irradiation.

    BACKGROUND: Malaria parasites are frequently transmitted by unscreened blood transfusions in Africa. Pathogen reduction methods in whole blood would thus greatly improve blood safety. We aimed to determine the efficacy of riboflavin plus irradiation for treatment of whole blood infected with Plasmodium falciparum. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Blood was inoculated with 10(4) or 10(5) parasites/mL and riboflavin treated with or without ultraviolet (UV) irradiation (40-160 J/mL red blood cells [mL(RBCs)]). Parasite genome integrity was assessed by quantitative amplification inhibition assays, and P. falciparum viability was monitored in vitro. RESULTS: Riboflavin alone did not affect parasite genome integrity or parasite viability. Application of UV after riboflavin treatment disrupted parasite genome integrity, reducing polymerase-dependent amplification by up to 2 logs (99%). At 80 J/mL(RBCs), riboflavin plus irradiation prevented recovery of viable parasites in vitro for 2 weeks, whereas untreated controls typically recovered to approximately 2% parasitemia after 4 days of in vitro culture. Exposure of blood to 160 J/mL(RBCs) was not associated with significant hemolysis. CONCLUSIONS: Riboflavin plus irradiation treatment of whole blood damages parasite genomes and drastically reduces P. falciparum viability in vitro. In the absence of suitable malaria screening assays, parasite inactivation should be investigated for prevention of transfusion-transmitted malaria in highly endemic areas

    The sexual stages of the Plasmodium falciparum life cycle are attractive targets for vaccines and transmission blocking drugs. Difficulties in culturing and obtaining large amounts of sexual stage P. falciparum parasites, particularly early stages, have often limited research progress in this area. We present a new protocol which simplifies the process of stimulating gametocytogenesis leading to improved synchronous gametocyte production. This new method can be adapted to enrich for early stage gametocytes (I and II) with a higher degree of purity than has previously been achieved, using MACS magnetic affinity columns. The protocol described lends itself to large scale culturing and harvesting of synchronous parasites suitable for biochemical assays, northern blots, flow cytometry, microarrays and proteomic analysis
