The educational impact on preschool teachers of an adaptation of the Reggio Emilia documentation process.

This study investigated the question of whether an adaptation of documentation as practiced in the schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy, can be successfully utilized in the United States. If documentation is successful, connections, extensions, and projects will develop as a result of the documentation process. A case study approach was used. Four teachers were given seven training sessions dealing with the theory and application of specific documentation techniques. These teachers were observed and interviewed to determine whether they used documentation more effectively in the classroom than at the start of the study. They were compared with other teachers who had not received instruction in the documentation process

Detecting semantic difference: a new model based on knowledge and collocational association

For example, given the words, airplane and car, the word flying can easily be thought and used as an attribute to differentiate them. In this study, we propose a novel automatic approach to detect whether an attribute word represents the difference between two given words. We exploit a combination of knowledge-based and co-occurrence features (collocations) to capture the semantic difference between two words in relation to an attribute. The features are scores that are defined for each pair of words and an attribute, based on association measures, n-gram counts, word similarity, and Concept-Net relations. Based on these features we designed a system that run several experiments on a SemEval-2018 dataset. The experimental results indicate that the proposed model performs better, or at least comparable with, other systems evaluated on the same data for this task.Published versio

Residential Densities: A Patchwork Placebo

This article examines the importance of residential density planning in today\u27s society and the misapplications of this concept which have led to serious inequities in the population distribution of major American urban areas. The article will also discuss one of the great obstacles to the achievement of a rational population distribution, namely, exclusionary zoning ordinances. Finally, it will evaluate the future of density planning, specifically examining ideal densities and efficient design for new communities as well as the judicial implications of the problem. Several recommendations will also be made which, if implemented, would alleviate some of the difficulties that permeate current practices in density planning
