    Correlation of Serum Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 and Hand Wrist Radiographs as Skeletal Maturity Indicators: An ex-vivo Study

    Introduction: Conventional Hand and Wrist radiographs, have certain drawbacks of exposing orthodontic patients to unnecessary radiation hazards and subjectivity to errors. Serum insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels have been reported to increase until the pubertal peak in literature. The present study aims to assess the relationship between serum IGF-1 and skeletal maturity indicators Materials and Methods: Lateral cephalograms of 60 patients were assigned SMI stage according to Fishman’s classification system. The serum IGF-1 levels of the patients were also evaluated. Correlation between the serum IGF-1 levels, age of the patient, and their SMI stage was analyzed. Results: Pearson's coefficient of correlation revealed a non-significant weak positive correlation (p=0.69; >0.05) between age and IGF-1 levels, and a non-significant weak negative correlation (p =0.52; >0.05) between SMI stages and IGF-1 levels. Results of the ANOVA test indicated that there was no significant difference between mean IGF-1 levels across the different age groups and eleven SMI groups. However, there was a significant difference noted in the mean IGF-1 levels and the restructured SMI categories and groups. Conclusion: The moderate correlation between age and serum IGF-1 fluctuations during puberty underscores the hormone's pivotal role in adolescent growth. This positions serum IGF-1 as a potentially specific and reliable marker for assessing mandibular growth modifications, offering a radiation-free alternative to conventional radiographic methods

    Injection of N-Radicals into Diesel Engine Exhaust Treated by Plasma for Improved NOxNO_x Removal: A Feasibility Study

    Reported in this paper is a feasibility study on the injection of plasma induced N radicals for the abatement of NO and NOxNO_x present in the actual diesel exhaust. The radical laden diesel exhaust was further treated by discharge plasma in a dielectric barrier discharge reactor. N radicals were produced in a separate plasma reactor filled with BaTi03BaTi0_3 pellets and were then injected into the treatment zone. There was a significant improvement in the efficiency when the radicals were injected compared to that when there was no radical injection. The efficiency of NOxNO_x, removal at 0 load with plasma alone was 14% whereas with the injection of N radicals it went up to 38%. The results of the experiments conducted at different loads are discussed

    Distribution, Demography, and Conservation of Lion-tailed Macaques (Macaca silenus) in the Anamalai Hills Landscape, Western Ghats, India

    The status of the endemic and endangered lion-tailed macaque (Macaca silenus) has not been properly assessed in several regions of the Western Ghats of southern India. We conducted a study in Parambikulam Forest Reserve in the state of Kerala to determine the distribution, demography, and status of lion-tailed macaques. We laid 5km2 grid cells on the map of the study area (644km2) and made four replicated walks in each grid cell using GPS. We gathered data on lion-tailed macaque group locations, demography, and site covariates including trail length, duration of walk, proportion of evergreen forest, height of tallest trees, and human disturbance index. We also performed occupancy modeling using PRESENCE ver. 3.0. We estimated a minimum of 17 groups of macaques in these hills. Low detection and occupancy probabilities indicated a low density of lion-tailed macaques in the study area. Height of the tallest trees correlated positively whereas human disturbance and proportion of evergreen forest correlated negatively with occupancy in grid cells. We also used data from earlier studies carried out in the surrounding Anamalai Tiger Reserve and Nelliyampathy Hills to discuss the conservation status in the large Anamalai Hills Landscape. This landscape harbors an estimated population of 1108 individuals of lion-tailed macaques, which is about one third of the entire estimated wild population of this species. A conservation plan for this landscape could be used as a model for conservation in other regions of the Western Ghats

    Genetic factors play a fundamental role in the genesis of many mental disorders. The identification of the underlying genetic variation will therefore transform parts of psychiatry toward a neuroscience-based discipline. With the sequence of the human genome now available, the majority of common variations identified, and new high-throughput technologies arriving in academic research laboratories, the identification of genes is expected to explain a large proportion of the risk of developing mental disorders. So far, a number of risk genes have been identified, but no major gene has emerged. The majority of these genes participate in the regulation of biogenic amines that play critical roles in affect modulation and reward systems. The identification of genetic variations associated with mental disorders should provide an approach to evaluate risk for mental disorders, adjust pharmacotherapy on the individual level, and even allow for preventive interactions. New targets for the development of treatment are anticipated to derive from results of genetic studies. In this review, we summarize the current state of psychiatric genetics, underscore current discussions, and predict where the field is expected to move in the near future
