A Study on Kadha Kalam – A Retelling of the Mahabharatham

    Get PDF
The retelling of great epics has been a great success in recent times both at the international and national levels. Retelling is a technique that authors use to present their offbeat perspective on the great epics or characters of the epics. It gives novel dimensions, raises eccentric questions and voices for the voiceless and suppressed characters of the epics. Ramayana and Mahabharatham are the two famous Indian epics that have been retold in many Indian languages by many authors of different times. One of such retellings is Katha Kalam by Devakanthan written in the Tamil language, which sheds a different light on the story of Mahabharatha. The author tries to give possible explanations for the mythical attributes and incidents described in the epic. This article analyzes the novel through psychological and feminist lenses

Unintended Pregnancy And Induced Abortion In Mexico: Causes and Consequences

    Get PDF
Examining the hidden and stigmatized practice of induced abortion is very hard to do. Throughout the Mexican Republic's 31 states, induced abortion is highly restricted. (The exception is the capital, the Federal District, which decriminalized first-trimester abortions in 2007.) This report presents estimates of induced abortion for 2009, by the country's 32 entidades federativas (or federative entities) and by the woman's age. The report also examines what causes women to resort to abortion in the first place -- unintended pregnancy

According to the Virginia Department of State Police, there has been a legislative effort in 2008 and 2009 over the past two years to ensure that essential data from protective orders1 is entered into the Virginia Criminal Information Network ( VCIN ) immediately upon the order\u27s issuance. While data entry may seem like a dull topic, the following story highlights the dire significance of this seemingly mundane task

"Yes madam, I can speak!'': A study of the recovered voice of the domestic worker

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD (Women and Gender Studies)Events in the last few years on the global stage have heralded a new era for domestic workers, which may afford them the voice as subaltern that has been silent until now. Despite being constructed as silent and as subjects without agency, unionised domestic workers organised themselves globally, becoming more visible and making their voices heard. This culminated in the promulgation of the International Labour Organisation's (ILO) Convention No.189 on Decent Work for Domestic Workers (or C189) in September 2013, and the establishment of the International Domestic Workers' Federation (IDWF) in October 2013. This broadening of the scope of domestic workers' activism has not yet received sufficient attention in academic research. These two historic events on their own have the potential to change the dominant discourse around domestic workers, by mobilising workers with agency to challenge the meaning of the political ideologies informing their identity positions of exploitation and subjugation

Use of Plasmapheresis and Immunosuppressants to Treat Diffuse Alveolar Hemorrhage in a Patient with Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a systemic granulomatous inflammatory disease characterized by small-to-medium vessel vasculitis due to Central Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody (C-ANCA). GPA commonly involves the lungs and the kidneys. Among the pulmonary manifestations, diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DHA) is a rare presentation of GPA that can present with hemoptysis leading to acute onset of anemia and hemodynamic instability. An active diagnostic workup including serologic titer of C-ANCA, imaging, intensive care, and aggressive immunosuppression is the key to DAH management. We report a case of DAH secondary to GPA that presented with hemoptysis leading to severe anemia, initially resuscitated symptomatically and started on plasmapheresis with pulse steroids and cyclophosphamide. Timely diagnosis and management led to a remarkable recovery of the pulmonary symptoms and imaging findings of DAH

Yoga is a philosophy and a way of life where art and science meet. It is the art of knowing oneself and knowing the eternal truth. It is the study of functioning of body, mind and intellect in the process of attaining freedom. Ayurveda is the ancient medicine healing system for body, mind and spirit. Yoga and Ayurveda have long been linked together as two complementary systems of human development. A women’s body is biologically created for certain specific functions. She has to undergo the four stages of life- childhood, adolescence, middle age and old age. A woman who has looked after her health will reap the reward by having a healthy pregnancy and delivery. It is absolutely essential for a pregnant woman to maintain her physical and mental well being both for herself and for the sake of the child within.A high-risk pregnancy is the one with a significant probability for a poor maternal or fetal outcome. The small family system in present generation and increasing trend of elderly pregnancies are causing more and more complications in antenatal period and during delivery. The incidence of high risk pregnancies is increasing in higher rate. The practice of Yoga and pranayama in such a crucial condition makes the journey of pregnancy a very easier one. It helps to combat the dangers of pregnancy, and prevents unavoidable tragic consequences. In fact regular practice of yoga is very much advised to lead a healthy life, and have a healthy pregnancy. During high-risk pregnancy yogic postures and breathing techniques do miracle. They prevent the possible complications and protect the pregnancy. Yoga and pranayama are healthy ways of life. The same healthy way of life is needed when the pregnancy condition becomes a risky one

Fluoride poisoning and the effect on collagen biosynthesis of osseus and non-osseus tissues of rabbit

    Get PDF
Fluoride poisoning Is known to cause a debilitating condition clinically referred to as Fluorlsls. The present Investigation on the experimental animal model has been carried out to collect Information on the precise nature of fluoride action, with special reference to collagen biosynthesis. Rabbits subjected to Fluoride poisoning for varying time Intervals were administered with carbon labelled proline. Both osseus and non-osseus tissues were analyzed to measure the rate of Incorporation of labelled proline, and Index for collagen biosynthesis. Part I of the article is dealing with 14C proline uptake by Hydrolyzed collagen (obtained by centrifugation at 5000 Ă— g) and residual protein of tissues viz: Bone, Tendon, Muscle, Kidney cortex, Skin, Lung, Pinna and Trachea. Part II of the article Is dealing with 14C proline uptake by different fraction of collagen Viz: collagenase digested fraction and separated by centrifugation at 9000 Ă— g ; native collagen fibril, acid soluble collagen, alkali soluble collagen and non-collagenous protein. The results obtained In Part I, suggest that In Fluoride poisoning collagen biosynthesis has been greatly impaired both In osseus and non-ossues tissues. This has been further confirmed by the results obtained in Part II of the investigation

Leiomyomas are benign smooth muscle tumors. They can develop anywhere in the body, but the most common site is the uterinemyometrium. The vulval leiomyomas are rare in occurrence and are uncommon. We report a case of a 33-year-old woman whopresented with a painless vulval mass for 3 years. The histopathological examination following its surgical removal was indicativeof leiomyoma which was positive for smooth muscle actin
