Stable Isotope Composition of Fatty Acids in Organisms of Different Trophic Levels in the Yenisei River
We studied four-link food chain, periphytic microalgae and water moss (producers), trichopteran larvae (consumers I), gammarids (omnivorous – consumers II) and Siberian grayling (consumers III) at a littoral site of the Yenisei River on the basis of three years monthly sampling. Analysis of bulk carbon stable isotopes and compound specific isotope analysis of fatty acids (FA) were done. As found, there was a gradual depletion in 13C contents of fatty acids, including essential FA upward the food chain. In all the trophic levels a parabolic dependence of δ13C values of fatty acids on their degree of unsaturation/chain length occurred, with 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 in its lowest point. The pattern in the δ13C differences between individual fatty acids was quite similar to that reported in literature for marine pelagic food webs. Hypotheses on isotope fractionation were suggested to explain the findings
Characterization of Zoobenthos and Export of Biomass and Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids due to Emergence of Midges (Diptera, Chironomidae) from Three Saline Lakes of South Siberia
(Diptera, Chironomidae).
Gammarus lacustris
Ceratopogonidae.
During two growing seasons, we studied the biomass, the number, and the species composition of zoobenthos in three saline lakes, Shira, Shunet, and Uchum, located in arid steppe of South Siberia, Russia. We also estimated productivity and export of biomass and physiologically significant omega‑3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) associated with the emergence of amphibiotic insects from these lakes. All zoobenthic communities had low taxonomic diversity with insect larvae of Chironomidae and Ceratopogonidae families and amphipod Gammarus lacustris constituting their major portion. Overall taxonomic composition and productivity of the lakes differed considerably. Among amphibiotic insects, larvae of Polypedilum bicrenatum, Сhironomus nigrifrons, and Glyptotendipes salinus were the most abundant in Lake Shira. In Lake Shunet, in addition to the dominant P. bicrenatum, zoobenthos was mainly represented by larvae of Chironomus salinarius and two Procladius species. Benthos of Lake Uchum was distinctly dominated by the Procladius genus, Orthocladiinae subfamily, and Ceratopogonidae family larvae. Production of chironomids in Shira, Shunet, and Uchum was 16.1 ± 4.1, 45.6 ± 13.6, and 9.6±4.6 g wet weight / m2 for 30 days, respectively, increasing with an increase in E. V. Balushkina’s index, which estimates water quality. Potential export of chironomid biomass ranged from 0.6 to 3.1 g wet weight / m2 of aquatic area per year. We suggested that productivity and biomass export were related with the quantity of food (organic matter) in the sediments. Glyptotendipes adults,
which emerged from Lakes Shunet and Shira, and Orthocladiinae adults, which emerged from Lake
Uchum, had similar contents of omega‑3 PUFAs per unit of wet weight. Thus, productivity rather than
taxonomic composition of chironomid communities might be a more important factor for export of
PUFAs from saline lake
Fatty Acid Content and Composition of Fly Larvae Lucilia sericata (Family Calliphoridae) Grown on Diets with Different Content of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and the Amino Acid Composition of this Species
Lucilia sericata,
Aquaculture is a fast-growing branch of agriculture, but it faces fish feed shortages due to a decrease in wild fish catches. As a result, the price of feed increases. For further development it requires alternative feed sources. Insects are considered a suitable protein source for fish, but their fatty acid (FA) composition often does not meet the requirements of aquaculture. In fish oil, PUFAs are dominated by the omega‑3 family, and in terrestrial insects, by the omega‑6 family. A question arises whether insect larvae lipid composition can be modified to increase the content of omega‑3 PUFAs. For this purpose, Lucilia sericata larvae were grown on standard feed and feed with addition of camelina oil rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, 18:3n‑3), and their FA content and composition were compared. To evaluate the quality of these larvae protein, their amino acid (AA) composition was determined. The FA analysis was performed on a gas chromatograph equipped with a mass-spectrometer detector. The AA analysis was performed on a liquid chromatograph. The AA composition of the examined fly larvae, similarly to other insects (Diptera), was close to the AA composition of fish meal. Fatty acid composition and content of fly larvae grown on standard food was characterized by a low ratio
of omega‑3/omega‑6 PUFAs and by the dominance of 18:1n‑9 and 18:2n‑6 fatty acids, which together
comprised 40–60 % of the total of FAs. The addition of camelina oil changed the ratio of omega‑3/
omega‑6 PUFAs from 0.11 to 0.46, mainly due to the increase in ALA content. Thus, FA content and
composition of L. sericata larvae can be significantly modified by a die
Feedstocks, Methods and Perspectives of Biodiesel Production
Backgrounds, stages of development and contemporary achievements of bioenergetics are considered in
the review. We focus on production of biodiesel which is renewable, ecological safety fuel for transport
and an alternative for petrodiesel. Main feedstocks, technological stages of biodiesel production
and their effect on fuel properties were concerned. Economical, ecological and energetic problems
related with biodiesel production from various bioresources were analysed. As shown, at present the
most part of biodiesel in the world is produced from agricultural crop oils. High cost and negative
ecological and economical consequences of use of agricultural crops as the feedstock resulted in
development of production of “advanced” biofuel, i.e., that based on biomass of microorganisms and
various biowastes. However, growth and treatment of microalgae biomass for biodiesel production are
still costly and unsustainable. Different ways for improving of such biodiesel cost are supposed, e.g.
integrated microbial processes for biofuel and high value-added products or simultaneous wastewater
treatment. Production of biodiesel from feedstocks which are various biowastes (for instance, municipal
sewage sludges, or bottom sediments dredged from recovered eutrophic water bodies) appeared to be
the most economically profitable since such feedstock is cost-free and an important ecological issue of

Fatty Acid Content and Composition of Freshwater Planaria Dendrocoelopsis sp. (Planariidae, Turbellaria, Platyhelminthes) from the Yenisei River
For the first time the fatty acid content and composition of freshwater planarian Dendrocoelopsis sp.
has been studied in a station of the large Siberian River, the Yenisei. The dominant fatty acids were
palmitic, oleic, eicosapentaenoic and docosapentaenoic acids. The characteristic feature of planarian
fatty acid composition was that ω3 docosapentaenoic acid was 2-10 times higher than docosahexaenoic
acid. The average content of ω3 PUFA in the planarian was significantly higher than that of ω6 PUFA,
7.20±1.21 and 1.22±0.22 mg/g of wet weight, respectively. The content of sum ω3 PUFAs which are
essential for the nutrition of aquatic organisms of the higher trophic levels in the studied planarian
was comparatively high

Dispersal of Midges (Chironomidae, Diptera) on Terrestrial Area after the Emergence from Saline Lake Shira
We studied the number of midges (Chironomidae, Diptera) on the terrestrial area where flows of organic matter and essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) provided by the emergence of the amphibiotic insects from saline steppe Lake Shira were dispersed. Records of midge specimens captured on sticky traps showed that 50 and 95 percent of the emerged adults of the Glyptotendipes and Polypedilum genera occurred within 25-m and 100-m strips surrounding the lakeshore, respectively. The areas of these strips were calculated along with quantification of flows of chironomid biomass and essential PUFA per land area unit based on data of previously measured export. For the 25-m lake-surrounding strip, where 50% of midges swarmed, the annual import of dry biomass and PUFA accounted for 1.5 g · m-2 and 15 mg · m-2, respectively. Further, the 100-m wide strip, where 95% of the midges were registered, got the annual flows of 0.7 g dry weight · m-2 and 7.2 mg PUFA · m-2. The calculated values of PUFA import were similar to measurements in relatively productive landscapes. The number of midges captured on the site located near the most productive lake part was the lowest among all the studied near-lake sites. This site of the lakeshore is part of a national preserve, where a great number of insectivorous birds live or stop. The lower abundance of swarming chironomids on this site was likely related to intensive consumption by terrestrial animals, i.e., birds, for obtaining necessary doses of essential compound
