Des matières qui travaillent : Une leçon pour l’anthropologie (Note de recherche)

De nouvelles matières font désormais concurrence aux artefacts et aux fonctions selon des modes appelés à déstabiliser notre façon d’envisager la nature du monde social et culturel que nous habitons. Dans cette note de recherche, nous soulignons la nécessité d’étudier l’introduction et l’adoption de ces nouvelles matières et des nouvelles technologies auxquelles elles font appel pour comprendre les répercussions que ces innovations auront sur la théorie et la méthodologie des sciences sociales et historiques. Une telle étude dans le contexte euro-américain pourrait bénéficier de la comparaison avec des données ethnologiques provenant de régions du monde où l’économie du savoir constitue une pratique de longue date, données oblitérées par une approche de la technologie et de sa transmission qui a été centrée jusqu’ici sur l’objet et la production.New materials compete now over artefacts and functions in ways that will unsettle our received assumptions about the nature of the social and culture world we inhabit. This note of research outlines the need to chart the introduction and uptake of new materials and new technologies to understand the implication that these innovations will have for theory and methodology in the social and historical sciences. It suggests that its study in the Euro-American context can benefit from comparable ethnographic data from regions of the world where knowledge economies have long been practice; data, shunned by an object and production centered approach to social technology and its transmission.Nuevas materias compiten de ahora en adelante con los artefactos y las funciones de acuerdo con los modos destinados a desestabilizar nuestra manera de considerar la naturaleza del mundo social y cultural que habitamos. En esta nota de investigación, subrayamos la necesidad de estudiar la introducción y la adopción de nuevas materias y de las nuevas tecnologías empleadas para comprender las repercusiones que esas innovaciones tendrán sobre la teoría y la metodología de las ciencias sociales e históricas. Este tipo de estudio en el contexto euro-americano podría aprovechar la comparación con los datos etiológicos provenientes de regiones del mundo en donde la economía del saber constituye una práctica antigua, datos borrados por un enfoque de la tecnología y de su transmisión que ha sido centrada, hasta aquí, sobre el objeto y la producción

Imaging the Body Politic

Politiques du corps : le nœud dans l’imaginaire océanien. – Dans les cultures du Pacifique, le nœud est loin de posséder seulement une valeur fonctionnelle. L’acte de nouer ne lie pas seulement deux choses mais aussi deux concepts – le visible et l’invisible. Dans ce texte, nous étudions l’élaboration visuelle des noeuds dans des effigies austronésiennes qui nous apparaissent comme l’illustration de différents modes d’exister et de penser : l’un individuel, naturel et mortel, l’autre surnaturel et immortel. Les cordes sacrées hawaïennes, le to’o tahitien et les noeuds sculptés malanggan de la Nouvelle-Irlande supposent différentes « politiques du corps ». Cette expression s’applique ici à un ensemble de représentations hiérarchisées, elles-mêmes fondées sur la structure du corps humain. L’acte de nouer et la topologie impliquée par les représentations fondées sur le nœud sont abordées dans la perspective d’une analyse des techniques de la pensée. Ces procédés se révèlent capables d’articuler, par l’invention d’une image qui incarne le concept, l’acte technique et la pensée abstraite.The knot is argued to have more than a functional value in the Pacific as it becomes the object of thought and holds together through binding not two things, but two concepts: that of the visible and that of the invisible. The paper examines the visual elaboration of knots in Austronesian effigies as vehicle of ways of being and thinking, as their binding expressed the fiction of a conjunction of two bodies, one individual, natural and mortal, the other representing a supra-natural and immortal entity or principle. The Hawaiian sacred cord, the Tahitian to’o and the carved knots of malanggan sculptures of New Ireland are shown to fashion a “body politic”, a term given by Kantorowicz (1957) to the abstract maxim of the sempiternity or perpetuity of divine office in 14th century France. Empathie avec la matière

Empathie avec la matière  : comment repenser la nature de l’action technique.L’importance des matériaux est souvent minimisée dans l’analyse des systèmes sociaux et techniques alors qu’ils façonnent les bases mêmes du monde dans lequel nous vivons. Cet article se propose de questionner cette omission en attirant l’attention sur la nature des matériaux et des actions calculées qu’ils occasionnent. Nous soutenons que le potentiel transformatif des matériaux joue un rôle essentiel quant à leur choix et leur utilisation, lequel potentiel va de pair avec une certaine empathie, une «  intersubjectivité  », dont la nature est déterminante pour comprendre comment les individus interprètent leur monde social de manière abstraite, généralisable et souvent immuable. Nous examinons la nature de l’empathie avec les matériaux à travers une série d’études de cas ramenés du Pacifique, où le rôle du concret dans l’imagination sociale occupe une place importante dans les études ethnographiques, contrairement aux collections d’artefacts qui, curieusement, demeurent en marge, un simple témoignage de la description du monde social.Empathy with the matter  : how to reconsider the nature of the technical action. Materials are often downplayed in the analysis of social and technical systems and yet materials shape the very basis of the world we live in. This paper sets out to challenge this oversight by drawing attention to the nature of materials and the acts of calculation they engender. The transformative potential of materials, we argue, plays a fundamental role in their selection and uptake and is met with an empathy that is shared intersubjectively, the nature of empathy with materials being crucial for explaining how individuals interpret their social world in abstract, generalizable and often unchanging ways. We examine the nature of empathy with materials through a series of case studies taken from the Pacific, where the role of the concrete in social imagination has figured prominently in ethnographic studies, yet where artefact collections have curiously remained bystanders to the depiction of social worlds

Differential Geometry, the Informational Surface and Oceanic Art: The Role of Pattern in Knowledge Economies

Graphic pattern (e.g. geometric design) and number-based code (e.g. digital sequencing) can store and transmit complex information more efficiently than referential modes of representation. The analysis of the two genres and their relation to one another has not advanced significantly beyond a general classification based on motion-centred geometries of symmetry. This article examines an intriguing example of patchwork coverlets from the maritime societies of Oceania, where information referencing a complex genealogical system is lodged in geometric designs. By drawing attention to the interplay of graphic pattern and number-based code and its role in the knowledge economies of maritime societies, the article offers new insight into possible ways of designing a digital informational surface that captures the behaviour of an operational system, allowing both for differentiation and integration
