Eugenio Beltrán-Aguilar shares in this interview his vision of the advances and pending challenges in Latin America regarding public health, research and technological development in the context of the pandemic by COVID-19. It highlights the importance of carrying out epidemiological studies and institutionalizing epidemiological surveillance systems to generate up-to-date and quality information that serves to support public policies in the face of persistent problems such as dental caries and new challenges such as oropharyngeal cancer associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. It also analyzes the impact of the pandemic on dental education and dental practice, while pointing out routes for advanced research and to improve our knowledge on the possible impacts of the pandemic on the population. All this, in a weakening context of multilateral public health organizations.

The title compound (trade name: quinclorac), C10H5Cl2NO2, was crystallized from a dimethyl sulfoxide solution. Quinclorac molecules are packed mainly via π–π stacking interactions between neighbouring heterocycles (interplanar distance: 3.31 Å) and via O—H⋯N hydrogen bonding

Low energy electron energy-loss spectroscopy of CF₃X (X=Cl,Br)

    No full text
We report threshold electron energy-loss spectra for the fluorohalomethanes CFC₃X (X=Cl,Br). Measurements were made at incident electron energies of 30 and 100 eV in energy-loss range of 4-14 eV, and at scattering angles of 4 degrees and 15 degrees. Several new electronic transitions are observed which are ascribable to excitation of low-lying states as well as are intrinsically overlapped in the molecules themselves. Assignments of these electronic transitions are suggested. These assignments are based on present spectroscopic and cross-section measurements, high-energy scattering spectra, and ab initio molecular orbital calculations. The calculated potential curves along the C-X bond show repulsive nature, suggesting that these transitions may lead to dissociation of the C-X bond. The present results are also compared with the previous ones for CF₃H, CF₄, and CF₃I.This work was performed with the support and under the auspices of the CUP, the IAEA’s Co-ordinated Research Program, MEXT, and JAEA.

This study used the Kihon Checklist, Daily Life Performance Checklist and Interest Checklist toward 337 healthy elderly persons in the community to examined their perception of inconveniences to daily life performance as well as the daily activities which they are ‘doing,’ ‘want to do’ and are ‘interested in doing.’ Among 377 healthy elderly participants, 20.0% were found to be qualified for the Secondary Prevention Program, 49.3% experienced inconvenience to ‘get up from the floor,’ 42.7% suffered inconvenience to do ‘weeding,’ 38.7% recognized inconvenience to ‘go up and down stairs,’ and 54.7% recognized ‘forgetfulness.’ Both the qualified and the unqualified elderly were ‘interested in’ and ‘want to do’ ‘haiku,’ ‘painting and writing picture-letters,’ ‘calligraphy,’ and besides ‘dance’ and ‘volunteer’ were drawn as the daily life performance that the qualified persons for the Secondary Prevention Program are ‘interested in doing’ and ‘want to do.’ The perception of inconveniences and interests to daily life performance of the elderly people qualified for secondary prevention program

Understanding the formation of maxillary sinus in Japanese human foetuses using cone beam CT

    Get PDF
The formation of the maxillary sinus (MS) is tied to the maturation of the craniofacial bones during development. The MS and surrounding bone matrices in Japanese foetal specimens were inspected using cone beam computed tomography relative to the nasal cavity (NC) and the surrounding bones, including the palatine bone, maxillary process, inferior nasal concha and lacrimal bone. The human foetuses analysed were 223.2 ± 25.9 mm in crown-rump length (CRL) and ranged in estimated age from 20 to 30 weeks of gestation. The amount of bone in the maxilla surrounding the MS increased gradually between 20 and 30 weeks of gestation. Various calcified structures that formed the bone matrix were found in the cortical bone of the maxilla, and these calcified structures specifically surrounded the deciduous tooth germs. By 30 weeks of gestation, the uncinate process of the ethmoid bone formed a border with the maxilla. The distance from the midline to the maximum lateral surface border of the MS combined with the width from the midline to the maximum lateral surface border of the inferior nasal concha showed a high positive correlation with CRL in Japanese foetuses. There appears to be a complex correlation between the MS and NC formation during development in the Japanese foetus. Examination of the surrounding bone indicated that MS formation influences maturation of the maxilla and the uncinate process of the ethmoid bone during craniofacial bone development
