    Case report: Lymphocytic-plasmacytic and eosinophilic enterocolitis presented with marked eosinophilia and basophilia in a cat

    Inflammatory bowel disease is a common condition in cats, characterized by recurring gastrointestinal signs with histologic evidence of intestinal inflammation. A 9-month-old neutered male Sphynx cat was presented with a 5-week history of vomiting and hematochezia. Conservative patient management with a therapeutic gastrointestinal formula, antibiotics, and antiemetics resulted in a positive response to treatment, with relapse of signs when the medications were discontinued. A new finding of marked eosinophilia and basophilia was identified 3 months after the initial presentation. Colonoscopy revealed cecal erosions and a surgical biopsy with histopathology confirmed a diagnosis of lymphocytic-plasmacytic and eosinophilic enterocolitis. For this diagnosis, the patient was treated with prednisolone, tylosin, and metronidazole. Antibiotics were gradually tapered as the cat showed clinical improvement. The patient showed resolution of the gastrointestinal signs, and the numbers of eosinophils and basophils returned within the reference range 8 weeks after the treatment began. Basophilia and eosinophilia has been reported in conjunction with feline T-cell lymphoma. However, marked basophilia accompanying eosinophilia is extremely rare in cats with inflammatory bowel disease. We herein provide clinical details, including ultrasonography, endoscopy, histopathology, and disease course of feline lymphocytic-plasmacytic and eosinophilic enterocolitis with marked basophilia and eosinophilia. This case highlights the importance of considering enteritis as potential diagnoses when eosinophilia and basophilia are concurrently observed in cats

    Adaptor Protein 2 (Ap-2) Complex is Essential for Functional Axogenesis in Hippocampal Neurons

    The complexity and diversity of a neural network requires regulated elongation and branching of axons, as well as the formation of synapses between neurons. In the present study we explore the role of AP-2, a key endocytic adaptor protein complex, in the development of rat hippocampal neurons. We found that the loss of AP-2 during the early stage of development resulted in impaired axon extension and failed maturation of the axon initial segment (AIS). Normally the AIS performs two tasks in concert, stabilizing neural polarity and generating action potentials. In AP-2 silenced axons polarity is established, however there is a failure to establish action potential firing. Consequently, this impairs activity-driven Ca2+ influx and exocytosis at nerve terminals. In contrast, removal of AP-2 from older neurons does not impair axonal growth or signaling and synaptic function. Our data reveal that AP-2 has important roles in functional axogenesis by proper extension of axon as well as the formation of AIS during the early step of neurodevelopment

    A pilot scale dual fluidized bed gasification system was developed for polygeneration with biomass. The gasification system is designed for supplying syngas for Fischer Tropsch (F-T) synthesis of bio-diesel and power generation with a syngas engine. Characteristics of biomass steam gasification were investigated in a lab scale bubbling fluidized bed, and hydrodynamics of a dual fluidized bed were investigated in a cold flow model. Based on the results from the lab scale test and cold flow model, a pilot scale dual fluidized bed gasifier was designed. In this paper, the developing process of the gasifier and preliminary results of system operation will be presented

    Recurrent Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding from Congenital Arteriovenous Malformation in the Terminal Ileum Mimicking Intestinal Varicosis: A Case Report

    We report on an exceptional vascular cause of gastrointestinal hemorrhage. A 30-yr-old man was admitted because of recurrent hematochezia. Colonoscopy showed circumferential, erythematous, and nodular vascular distensions with hematocystic spots in the terminal ileum resembling varicosis and subsequent computed tomography with 3-dimensional angiographic reconstruction revealed a vascular architecture around the terminal ileum. No other potential source of bleeding was identified. The patient was treated by ileocecectomy and the final diagnosis was of an arteriovenous malformation confined to the terminal ileum. He has been followed-up without a further hemorrhagic episode

    Thermal durability and fracture behavior of layered Yb-Gd-Y-based thermal barrier coatings in thermal cyclic exposure

    The effects of structural design on the thermal durability and fracture behavior of Yb-Gd-Y-based thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were investigated through thermal cyclic exposure tests, such as furnace cyclic thermal fatigue (FCTF) and jet engine thermal shock (JETS) tests. The effects of composition in the bond coat and feedstock purity for the buffer layer on its lifetime performance were also examined. To overcome the drawbacks of Yb-Gd-Y-based material with inferior thermal durability due to poor mechanical properties and low coefficient of thermal expansion, a buffer layer was introduced in the Yb-Gd-Y-based TBC systems. In FCTF tests, the TBCs with the buffer layer showed a longer lifetime performance than those without the buffer layer, showing the longest thermal durability in the TBC with the Co-Ni-based bond coat and the buffer layer of regular purity. In JETS tests, the TBC with the Ni-based bond coat and the buffer layer of high purity showed a sound condition after 2000 cycles, showing better thermal durability for TBC with the Co-Ni-based bond coat rather than that with the Ni-based bond coat in the single layer coating without the buffer layer. The buffer layer effectively enhanced the thermal durability in slow temperature change (in the FCTF test), while the bond-coat composition and the feedstock purity for the buffer layer were found to be important factor to improve the thermal durability of the TBC in fast temperature change (in the JEET test). Finally, these research findings allow us to control the structure, composition, and feedstock purity in TBC system for improving the thermal durability in cyclic thermal environments

    Single quantum dot selection and tailor-made photonic device integration using nanoscale focus pinspot

    Among the diverse platforms of quantum light sources, epitaxially grown semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are one of the most attractive workhorses for realizing various quantum photonic technologies owing to their outstanding brightness and scalability. There exist various material systems for these QDs based on their appropriate emission bandwidth; however, only a few material systems have successfully grown single or low-density QDs, which are essential for quantum light sources. In most other material systems, it is difficult to realize low-density QDs, and the mesa-etching process is usually undergone in order to reduce their density. Nevertheless, the etching process irreversibly destroys the medium near the QD, which is detrimental to in-plane device integration. In this study, we apply a nondestructive luminescence picking method termed as nanoscale focus pinspot (NFP) using helium ion microscopy to reduce the luminous QD density while retaining the surrounding medium. Given that the NFP can precisely manipulate the luminescence at nanoscale resolution, a photonic device can be deterministically fabricated on the target QD matched from both spatial and spectral points of view. After applying the NFP, we extract only a single QD emission out of the high-density ensemble QD emission. Moreover, the photonic structure of a circular Bragg reflector is deterministically integrated with the selected QD, and the extraction efficiency of the QD emission has been improved 27 times. Furthermore, this technique does not destroy the medium and only controls the luminescence. Hence, it is highly applicable to various photonic structures, including photonic waveguides or photonic crystal cavities regardless of their materials.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
