    Sarah Turner - eco-artist and designer through craft-based upcycling

    Sarah Turner is an eco-artist and designer who practices craft-based upcycling with waste plastic bottles and cans to create lighting, sculpture and decorative home interior products. Since 1998, her enthusiasm, creativity and good will have allowed her to gain several high-profile client commissions and to win awards from design, innovation and business competitions. The aim of this portrait is to introduce Sarah’s work and shed light on the resources, knowledge and skills involved in her practice and on the barriers to and drivers for her craft-based upcycling. We consider that Sarah’s work could be one of the stepping stones for a shift towards more sustainable craft practice, both in the United Kingdom and beyond. By exploring the right ingredients for craft-based upcycling, barriers liable to be faced and key drivers that stimulate motivation, we hope that this portrait will inspire and attract more designers and makers to embed upcycling in their future practice

    Type II superconductivity in SrPd2Ge2

    Previous investigations have shown that SrPd2Ge2, a compound isostructural with "122" iron pnictides but iron- and pnictogen-free, is a conventional superconductor with a single s-wave energy gap and a strongly three-dimensional electronic structure. In this work we reveal the Abrikosov vortex lattice formed in SrPd2Ge2 when exposed to magnetic field by means of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Moreover, by examining the differential conductance spectra across a vortex and estimating the upper and lower critical magnetic fields by tunneling spectroscopy and local magnetization measurements, we show that SrPd2Ge2 is a strong type II superconductor with \kappa >> sqrt(2). Also, we compare the differential conductance spectra in various magnetic fields to the pair breaking model of Maki - de Gennes for dirty limit type II superconductor in the gapless region. This way we demonstrate that the type II superconductivity is induced by the sample being in the dirty limit, while in the clean limit it would be a type I superconductor with \kappa\ << sqrt(2), in concordance with our previous study (T.     Lanczos exact diagonalization study of field-induced phase transition for Ising and Heisenberg antiferromagnets

    Using an exact diagonalization treatment of Ising and Heisenberg model Hamiltonians, we study field-induced phase transition for two-dimensional antiferromagnets. For the system of Ising antiferromagnet the predicted field-induced phase transition is of first order, while for the system of Heisenberg antiferromagnet it is the second-order transition. We find from the exact diagonalization calculations that the second-order phase transition (metamagnetism) occurs through a spin-flop process as an intermediate step.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    The Effects of d_{x^2-y^2}-d_{xy} Mixing on Vortex Structures and Magnetization

    The structure of an isolated single vortex and the vortex lattice, and the magnetization in a dd-wave superconductor are investigated within a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau (GL) model including the mixture of the dx2−y2d_{x^2-y^2}-wave and dxyd_{xy}-wave symmetry. The isolated single vortex structure in a week magnetic field is studied both numerically and asymptotically.
