Velocity Fluctuations in Electrostatically Driven Granular Media
We study experimentally the particle velocity fluctuations in an
electrostatically driven dilute granular gas. The experimentally obtained
velocity distribution functions have strong deviations from Maxwellian form in
a wide range of parameters. We have found that the tails of the distribution
functions are consistent with a stretched exponential law with typical
exponents of the order 3/2. Molecular dynamic simulations shows qualitative
agreement with experimental data. Our results suggest that this non-Gaussian
behavior is typical for most inelastic gases with both short and long range

Prominent bulk pinning effect in the MgB_2 superconductor
We report the magnetic-field dependence of the irreversible magnetization of
the recently discovered binary superconductor MgB. For the temperature
region of , the contribution of the bulk pinning to the
magnetization overwhelms that of the surface pinning. This was evident from the
fact that the magnetization curves, , were well described by the
critical-state model without considering the surface pinning effect. It was
also found that the curves at various temperatures scaled when the field
and the magnetization were normalized by the characteristic scaling factors
and , respectively. This feature suggests that the

Multiplex sequencing of paired-end ditags (MS-PET): a strategy for the ultra-high-throughput analysis of transcriptomes and genomes
The paired-end ditagging (PET) technique has been shown to be efficient and accurate for large-scale transcriptome and genome analysis. However, as with other DNA tag-based sequencing strategies, it is constrained by the current efficiency of Sanger technology. A recently developed multiplex sequencing method (454-sequencing™) using picolitre-scale reactions has achieved a remarkable advance in efficiency, but suffers from short-read lengths, and a lack of paired-end information. To further enhance the efficiency of PET analysis and at the same time overcome the drawbacks of the new sequencing method, we coupled multiplex sequencing with paired-end ditagging (MS-PET) using modified PET procedures to simultaneously sequence 200 000 to 300 000 dimerized PET (diPET) templates, with an output of nearly half-a-million PET sequences in a single 4 h machine run. We demonstrate the utility and robustness of MS-PET by analyzing the transcriptome of human breast carcinoma cells, and by mapping p53 binding sites in the genome of human colorectal carcinoma cells. This combined sequencing strategy achieved an approximate 100-fold efficiency increase over the current standard for PET analysis, and furthermore enables the short-read-length multiplex sequencing procedure to acquire paired-end information from large DNA fragments
Acclimation to short-term low temperatures in two Eucalyptus globulus clones with contrasting drought resistance
We tested the hypothesis that Eucalyptus
globulus Labill. genotypes that are more resistant to dry
environments might also exhibit higher cold tolerances
than drought-sensitive plants. The effect of low temperatures
was evaluated in acclimated and unacclimated
ramets of a drought-resistant clone (CN5) and a
drought-sensitive clone (ST51) of E. globulus. We
studied the plants’ response via leaf gas exchanges, leaf
water and osmotic potentials, concentrations of soluble
sugars, several antioxidant enzymes and leaf electrolyte
leakage. Progressively lowering air temperatures (from
24/16 to 10/ 2 C, day/night) led to acclimation of both
clones. Acclimated ramets exhibited higher photosynthetic
rates, stomatal conductances and lower membrane
relative injuries when compared to unacclimated ramets.
Moreover, low temperatures led to significant increases
of soluble sugars and antioxidant enzymes activity
(glutathione reductase, ascorbate peroxidase and superoxide
dismutases) of both clones in comparison to plants
grown at control temperature (24/16 C). On the other
hand, none of the clones, either acclimated or not,
exhibited signs of photoinhibition under low temperatures
and moderate light. The main differences in the
responses to low temperatures between the two clones
resulted mainly from differences in carbon metabolism,
including a higher accumulation of soluble sugars in the
drought-resistant clone CN5 as well as a higher capacity
for osmotic regulation, as compared to the droughtsensitive
clone ST51. Although membrane injury data
suggested that both clones had the same inherent
freezing tolerance before and after cold acclimation,
the results also support the hypothesis that the droughtresistant
clone had a greater cold tolerance at intermediate
levels of acclimation than the drought-sensitive
clone. A higher capacity to acclimate in a short period
can allow a clone to maintain an undamaged leaf surface
area along sudden frost events, increasing growt
Initial-State Interactions in the Unpolarized Drell-Yan Process
We show that initial-state interactions contribute to the
distribution in unpolarized Drell-Yan lepton pair production and , without suppression. The asymmetry is expressed as a
product of chiral-odd distributions , where the quark-transversity function
is the transverse momentum dependent, light-cone
momentum distribution of transversely polarized quarks in an {\it unpolarized}
proton. We compute this (naive) -odd and chiral-odd distribution function
and the resulting asymmetry explicitly in a quark-scalar diquark
model for the proton with initial-state gluon interaction. In this model the
function equals the -odd (chiral-even) Sivers
effect function . This suggests that the
single-spin asymmetries in the SIDIS and the Drell-Yan process are closely
related to the asymmetry of the unpolarized Drell-Yan process,
since all can arise from the same underlying mechanism. This provides new
insight regarding the role of quark and gluon orbital angular momentum as well
as that of initial- and final-state gluon exchange interactions in hard QCD

Cognitive Interview-Based Validation of the Patient-Reported Outcomes Version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events in Adolescents with Cancer
Context The National Cancer Institute created the Patient-Reported Outcomes version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (PRO-CTCAE) to allow direct input on symptomatic adverse events (AEs) from adult patients in oncology trials. Objectives This study sought to determine the youngest age to complete the PRO-CTCAE, evaluated comprehension of PRO-CTCAE among adolescents, tested new items not currently in PRO-CTCAE, and tested a parent-proxy version. Methods From seven pediatric cancer hospitals, 51 adolescents (13–20 years) receiving cancer treatment participated, along with 40 parent proxies. We evaluated 55 AEs from the PRO-CTCAE library (97 questions) and seven new AEs not in PRO-CTCAE that assess symptom frequency, severity, interference, or presence. Questions were distributed across three forms to reduce burden. Cognitive interviews with retrospective probing were completed in age groups of 13–15 and 16–20 year olds. Proxies were interviewed independently. Results In general, the 16–20 year olds and the parent proxies were able to understand and complete the PRO-CTCAE and newly designed AE questions. Five PRO-CTCAE terms (bloating of the abdomen, anxiety, flashing lights in front of your eyes, hot flashes, and bed sores) and the wording of the questions about AE severity were challenging for a few adolescents and proxies. The 13–15 year olds had greater challenges completing the PRO-CTCAE. Conclusion This study extends use of the adult PRO-CTCAE for adolescents as young as 16 years and proposes new questions for seven new symptomatic AEs and a parent-proxy version of PRO-CTCAE. Additional testing of the new questions and alternative language for more challenging PRO-CTCAE items is recommended in adults
Production and Decay of D_1(2420)^0 and D_2^*(2460)^0
We have investigated and final states and
observed the two established charmed mesons, the with mass
MeV/c and width MeV/c and
the with mass MeV/c and width
MeV/c. Properties of these final states, including
their decay angular distributions and spin-parity assignments, have been
studied. We identify these two mesons as the doublet predicted
by HQET. We also obtain constraints on {\footnotesize } as a function of the cosine of the relative phase of the two

Measurement of the branching fraction for
We have studied the leptonic decay of the resonance into tau
pairs using the CLEO II detector. A clean sample of tau pair events is
identified via events containing two charged particles where exactly one of the
particles is an identified electron. We find . The result is consistent with

Observation of the Charmed Baryon Decays to , , and
We have observed two new decay modes of the charmed baryon into
and using data collected with the
CLEO II detector. We also present the first measurement of the branching
fraction for the previously observed decay mode . The branching fractions for these three modes relative to

Study of the B^0 Semileptonic Decay Spectrum at the Upsilon(4S) Resonance
We have made a first measurement of the lepton momentum spectrum in a sample
of events enriched in neutral B's through a partial reconstruction of B0 -->
D*- l+ nu. This spectrum, measured with 2.38 fb**-1 of data collected at the
Upsilon(4S) resonance by the CLEO II detector, is compared directly to the
inclusive lepton spectrum from all Upsilon(4S) events in the same data set.
These two spectra are consistent with having the same shape above 1.5 GeV/c.
From the two spectra and two other CLEO measurements, we obtain the B0 and B+
semileptonic branching fractions, b0 and b+, their ratio, and the production
ratio f+-/f00 of B+ and B0 pairs at the Upsilon(4S). We report b+/b0=0.950
(+0.117-0.080) +- 0.091, b0 = (10.78 +- 0.60 +- 0.69)%, and b+ = (10.25 +- 0.57
+- 0.65)%. b+/b0 is equivalent to the ratio of charged to neutral B lifetimes,
