Sex hormone binding globulin gene polymorphisms and metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal Turkish women

Background: Insulin resistance is associated with obesity, glucose intolerance or diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease. Constellation of these risk factors iscalled metabolic syndrome (MetS). MetS is common among postmenopausal women. Low sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) levels associate with an increased risk of MetS in postmenopausal women. Variations in SHBG gene associate with low levels of circulating SHBG levels. We aim to study the association between SHBG gene polymorphisms — rs1799941 (A/G) and rs6257 (T/C) — with MetS among postmenopausal women. Methods: The study population consisted of 182 postmenopausal women with MetS and119 control subjects. We analyzed the allele frequencies of SHBG gene polymorphisms in relationto the risk components of MetS.Results: MetS patients displayed significantly lower SHBG levels compared to the lean controlsubjects (p = 0.036). rs1799941 A allele was associated with high SHBG levels (p = 0.031), low blood pressure, body mass index and waist circumference. The number of ‘high risk’ alleles (G allele of the rs1799941 and T allele of rs6257) correlated positively with waist circumference (r = 0.203, p = 0.006) and negatively with SHBG levels (r = –0.291, p = 0.024).Conclusions: SHBG gene polymorphisms associate with SHBG levels and MetS risk components among postmenopausal women. Hence, A allele (rs1799941) may have a protectiveeffect for MetS through its association with high SHBG levels among postmenopausal women

A double-chambered right ventricle (DCRV) is a heart defect, typically congenital, in which the right ventricle is separated into a proximal high-pressure (anatomically lower) chamber and distal low-pressure (anatomically higher) chamber. Commonly ventricular septal defect is found concomitantly in patients with DRCV. In this case report, we present a 20-year- -old female patient who was found to have a DRCV without any concomitant congenital heart disorder. W niniejszej pracy kazuistycznej przedstawiono przypadek 20-letniej chorej, u której wykryto DRCV bez innych współistniejących wad serca

Burden and Depressive Symptoms Associated with Adult-Child Caregiving for Individuals with Heart Failure

Background. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate adult-child caregiver burden in heart failure (HF) patients. Secondary purpose of the study was to identify the possible influencing factors for caregiver burden and depressive symptoms in a young adult-child caregiver group. Methods. A total of 138 adult-child caregivers and 138 patients with HF participated in this study. Caregivers' burden, depressive symptoms, and anxiety levels were assessed by using Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale (ZCBS), Beck Depression Inventory, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, respectively. Results. The mean ZCBS scores of the female caregivers were significantly higher than male caregivers. Approximately one-third of the adult-child caregivers had at least mild depressive symptoms. Caregivers with higher depressive symptoms had higher levels of caregiver burden. There were positive correlations between caregiving time, severity of depressive symptoms, and perceived caregiver burden. There was a negative correlation between education level of caregivers and perceived caregiver burden. Age, socioeconomic level, and marital status of patients were affecting factors for depressive symptoms in caregivers. Among caregiver characteristics, gender, marital status, and ZCBS scores seem to influence the depression in caregivers. Conclusions. The study findings suggest significant levels of burden and depressive symptoms even in adult-child caregivers of HF patients

Fast-exchanging spirocyclic rhodamine probes for aptamer-based super-resolution RNA imaging

Live-cell RNA imaging with high spatial and temporal resolution remains a major challenge. Here we report the development of RhoBAST:SpyRho, a fluorescent light-up aptamer (FLAP) system ideally suited for visualizing RNAs in live or fixed cells with various advanced fluorescence microscopy modalities. Overcoming problems associated with low cell permeability, brightness, fluorogenicity, and signal-to-background ratio of previous fluorophores, we design a novel probe, SpyRho (Spirocyclic Rhodamine), which tightly binds to the RhoBAST aptamer. High brightness and fluorogenicity is achieved by shifting the equilibrium between spirolactam and quinoid. With its high affinity and fast ligand exchange, RhoBAST:SpyRho is a superb system for both super-resolution SMLM and STED imaging. Its excellent performance in SMLM and the first reported super-resolved STED images of specifically labeled RNA in live mammalian cells represent significant advances over other FLAPs. The versatility of RhoBAST:SpyRho is further demonstrated by imaging endogenous chromosomal loci and proteins

5th Cyprus International Conference on Educational Research (CYICER) -- MAR 31-APR 02, 2016 -- Univ Kyrenia, Kyrenia, CYPRUSWOS: 000462228400057The effects of educational games and feedback-correction on the success of 6th grade students and the retention of the knowledge were investigated in this study. 6th grade students in a secondary school in Meram district of Konya comprise the study sample. Two classes of 6th grade with equal probability in this secondary school were determined as the experimental group while another class of 6th grade was determined as the control group. The electricity and systems unit was taught for 4 hours per week for 10 weeks by means of educational games in the experimental group 1, by means of educational games and feedback-correction in the experimental group 2 and according to the current MNE (Ministry of National Education) curriculum in the control group. The learning level test developed by the Yildirim (2015) was used in the study to measure the learning levels of the students and the retention of the knowledge. T-test and one way ANOVA were applied for independent and dependent groups. According to the findings obtained in the study, it was statistically determined that the educational games and feedback-correction applied in the experimental group 2 and educational games applied in the experimental group 1 were more effective in terms of retention of knowledge and learning levels compared to the current curriculum applied in the control group. On the other hand, it was also statistically determined that teaching by means of educational games, which was the method used for the experimental group 1, increased the learning level compared to the control group, on which the current curriculum was applied; however, there was no difference in terms of retention of the knowledge
