Tracking echovirus eleven outbreaks in Guangdong, China
In April 2019, a suspect cluster of enterovirus cases was reported in a neonatology department in Guangdong, China, resulting in five deaths. We aimed to investigate the pathogen profiles in fatal cases, the circulation and transmission pattern of
the viruses by combining metatranscriptomic, phylogenetic, and epidemiological analyses. Metatranscriptomic sequencing
was used to characterize the enteroviruses. Clinical and environmental surveillance in the local population was performed
to understand the prevalence and genetic diversity of the viruses in the local population. The possible source(s), evolution,
transmission, and recombination of the viruses were investigated by incorporating genomes from the current outbreak,
from local retrospective surveillance, and from public databases. Metatranscriptomic analysis identified Echovirus 11 (E11)
in three fatal cases. Seroprevalence of neutralization antibody to E11 was 35 to 44 per cent in 3â15 age groups of general population, and the viruses were associated with various clinical symptoms. From the viral phylogeny, nosocomial transmissions were identified and all E11 2019 outbreak strains were closely related with E11 strains circulating in local population 2017â19. Frequent recombination occurred among the 2019 Guangdong E11 outbreak strains and various genotypes in enterovirus B species. This study provides an example of combining advanced genetic technology and epidemiological surveillance in pathogen diagnosis, source(s), and transmission tracing during an infectious disease outbreak. The result highlights the hidden E11 circulation and the risk of viral transmission and infection in the young age population in China.

Patterned nanostructure in AgCo/Pt/MgO(001) thin film
The formation of patterned nanostructure in AgCo/Pt/MgO(001) thin film is
simulated by a technique of combining molecular dynamics and phase-field
theory. The dislocation (strain) network existing in Pt/MgO is used as a
template whose pattern is transferred to AgCo phase in spinodal decomposition,
resulting in regular arrays of Co islands that are attracted by the
dislocations. The influence of various factors, such as component concentration
and film thickness, is studied. It is found that the spinodal decomposition of
AgCo in this system is mainly characterized by a competition between a
surface-directed layer structure and the strain-induced patterned structure,
where the patterned Ag-Co structure only dominates in a small range near the
interface (less than 10 atomic layers). However, if the interlayer diffusion
can be minimized by controlling film growth conditions, it is shown that the
patterned structure can be formed throughout the entire film.Comment: 8 pages, 12 figure
Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in Mainland China
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has posed a significant threat to both humans and birds, and it has spanned large geographic areas and various ecological systems throughout Asia, Europe and Africa, but especially in mainland China. Great efforts in control and prevention of the disease, including universal vaccination campaigns in poultry and active serological and virological surveillance, have been undertaken in mainland China since the beginning of 2006. In this study, we aim to characterize the spatial and temporal patterns of HPAI H5N1, and identify influencing factors favoring the occurrence of HPAI H5N1 outbreaks in poultry in mainland China. Our study shows that HPAI H5N1 outbreaks took place sporadically after vaccination campaigns in poultry, and mostly occurred in the cold season. The positive tests in routine virological surveillance of HPAI H5N1 virus in chicken, duck, goose as well as environmental samples were mapped to display the potential risk distribution of the virus. Southern China had a higher positive rate than northern China, and positive samples were mostly detected from chickens in the north, while the majority were from duck in the south, and a negative correlation with monthly vaccination rates in domestic poultry was found (R = â0.19, p value = 0.005). Possible origins of macroscopic left-right asymmetry in organisms
I consider the microscopic mechanisms by which a particular left-right (L/R)
asymmetry is generated at the organism level from the microscopic handedness of
cytoskeletal molecules. In light of a fundamental symmetry principle, the
typical pattern-formation mechanisms of diffusion plus regulation cannot
implement the "right-hand rule"; at the microscopic level, the cell's
cytoskeleton of chiral filaments seems always to be involved, usually in
collective states driven by polymerization forces or molecular motors. It seems
particularly easy for handedness to emerge in a shear or rotation in the
background of an effectively two-dimensional system, such as the cell membrane
or a layer of cells, as this requires no pre-existing axis apart from the layer
normal. I detail a scenario involving actin/myosin layers in snails and in C.
elegans, and also one about the microtubule layer in plant cells. I also survey
the other examples that I am aware of, such as the emergence of handedness such
as the emergence of handedness in neurons, in eukaryote cell motility, and in

A qualitative exploration of nurses leaving nursing practice in China
AIM: This paper reports a theoretical understanding of nurses leaving nursing practice by exploring the processes of decisionâmaking by registered nurses in China on exiting clinical care. BACKGROUND: The loss of nurses through their voluntarily leaving nursing practice has not attracted much attention in China. There is a lack of an effective way to understand and communicate nursing workforce mobility in China and worldwide. DESIGN: This qualitative study draws on the constant comparative method following a grounded theory approach. METHOD: Inâdepth interviews with 19 nurses who had left nursing practice were theoretically sampled from one provincial capital city in China during August 2009âMarch 2010. RESULTS: The core category âMismatching Expectations: Individual vs. Organizationalâ emerged from leaversâ accounts of their leaving. By illuminating the interrelationship between the core category and the main category âIndividual Perception of Power,â four nursing behaviour patterns were identified: (1) Voluntary leaving; (2) Passive staying; (3) Adaptive staying and (4) Active staying
Periodicities in the Daily Proton Fluxes from 2011 to 2019 Measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station from 1 to 100 GV
We present the precision measurement of the daily proton fluxes in cosmic rays from May 20, 2011 to October 29, 2019 (a total of 2824 days or 114 Bartels rotations) in the rigidity interval from 1 to 100 GV based on 5.5Ă109 protons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer aboard the International Space Station. The proton fluxes exhibit variations on multiple timescales. From 2014 to 2018, we observed recurrent flux variations with a period of 27 days. Shorter periods of 9 days and 13.5 days are observed in 2016. The strength of all three periodicities changes with time and rigidity. The rigidity dependence of the 27-day periodicity is different from the rigidity dependences of 9-day and 13.5-day periods. Unexpectedly, the strength of 9-day and 13.5-day periodicities increases with increasing rigidities up to âŒ10 GV and âŒ20 GV, respectively. Then the strength of the periodicities decreases with increasing rigidity up to 100 GV.</p

Precision Measurement of the Proton Flux in Primary Cosmic Rays from Rigidity 1 GV to 1.8 TV with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station
A precise measurement of the proton flux in primary cosmic rays with rigidity (momentum/charge) from 1 GV to 1.8 TV is presented based on 300 million events. Knowledge of the rigidity dependence of the proton flux is important in understanding the origin, acceleration, and propagation of cosmic rays. We present the detailed variation with rigidity of the flux spectral index for the first time. The spectral index progressively hardens at high rigidities.</p
