    Effect of 660 nm Light-Emitting Diode on the Wound Healing in Fibroblast-Like Cell Lines

    Light in the red to near-infrared (NIR) range (630–1000 nm), which is generated using low energy laser or light-emitting diode (LED) arrays, was reported to have a range of beneficial biological effects in many injury models. NIR via a LED is a well-accepted therapeutic tool for the treatment of infected, ischemic, and hypoxic wounds as well as other soft tissue injuries in humans and animals. This study examined the effects of exposure to 660 nm red LED light at intensities of 2.5, 5.5, and 8.5 mW/cm2 for 5, 10, and 20 min on wound healing and proliferation in fibroblast-like cells, such as L929 mouse fibroblasts and human gingival fibroblasts (HGF-1). A photo illumination-cell culture system was designed to evaluate the cell proliferation and wound healing of fibroblast-like cells exposed to 600 nm LED light. The cell proliferation was evaluated by MTT assay, and a scratched wound assay was performed to assess the rate of migrating cells and the healing effect. Exposure to the 660 nm red LED resulted in an increase in cell proliferation and migration compared to the control, indicating its potential use as a phototherapeutic agent

The effect of drugs on olfactory disorder following upper respiratory infection, including PIOD, has not been clearly established, which adds to the difficulty with treating the disorder. However, the effect of olfactory training on PIOD has been confirmed by numerous studies. As such, olfactory training is gaining attention, and has taken on greater importance, as the sole treatment for COVID-19–induced olfactory disorder in this pandemic age.     Electro-Mechanical Safety Testing of Portable ECG Devices for Home Healthcare Usage

    OBJECTIVES: This paper suggests the experimental guidelines to evaluate the electro-mechanical safety of belt type equipment. The electro-mechanical safety was determined by using the International Electrotechnical Commission guidelines, which are widely used as important factors for assessing the electro-mechanical safety of belt type equipment. However, the local guidelines on wearable healthcare sensors are currently not well-established. Therefore, safety guidelines suited for the actual circumstances in Korea are required, and this paper attempts to try a new experimental safety test procedure of the wearable healthcare sensor. METHODS: This belt type device measures the electrocardiogram (ECG) and heart rates by attaching to the chest. Examination lists were selected by analyzing the common standards ofelectro-mechanical safety (IEC 60601-1) and environment tests (IEC 60068-1, IEC 60068-2) of home-healthcare equipment. RESULTS: The essential electrical safety, which was required for the RS300G3 as a medical device, was evaluated, and most of the examination lists were selected by considering the circumstances of the users. The device passed all the selected examinable lists that are applicable to the Korean environment. CONCLUSIONS: This study has limitations to estimate and to conduct electro-mechanical safety experiments because our study focused on the belt type of heart-rates equipment. We are not taking into account the overall electro-mechanical home-healthcare measurements. According to industrial and technological development, there are infinite possibilities for the advancement of home-healthcare equipment, so more examination lists for safety are being added in addition to what we have doneope

    Cecal Polypoid Arteriovenous Malformations Removed by Endoscopic Biopsy

    Colonic arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is one of the causes of lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Unlike small vascular ectasia or angiodysplasia, colonic AVM tends to be solitary, large in size, and identified endoscopically as flat or elevated bright red lesion. Herein, we report a case of non-solitary and small cecal AVMs which were removed by endoscopic biopsy. A 66-yr-old woman was referred for routine gastrointestinal cancer screening. She was suffering from diabetes, hypertension, end-stage renal disease, and anemia of chronic disease. On colonoscopic finding, three semi-pedunculated polyps, less than 5 mm in size, were noticed near to the appendiceal orifice. Since the lesions revealed normal-looking epithelium with converging folds on the cecal base, lesions were diagnosed as inflammatory polyps on gross finding. Three biopsies were taken from each lesion. Bleeding from the biopsied site ceased spontaneously. Histopathologic evaluation demonstrated intramucosal hemorrhage and dilated submucosal vessels which were consistent with polypoid colonic AVMs

    Treatment of Fingertip Amputation in Adults by Palmar Pocketing of the Amputated Part

    BackgroundFirst suggested by Brent in 1979, the pocket principle is an alternative method for patients for whom a microsurgical replantation is not feasible. We report the successful results of a modified palmar pocket method in adults.MethodsBetween 2004 and 2008, we treated 10 patients by nonmicrosurgical replantation using palmar pocketing. All patients were adults who sustained a complete fingertip amputation from the tip to lunula in a digits. In all of these patients, the amputation occurred due to a crush or avulsion-type injury, and a microsurgical replantation was not feasible. We used the palmar pocketing method following a composite graft in these patients and prepared the pocket in the subcutaneous layer of the ipsilateral palm.ResultsOf a total of 10 cases, nine had complete survival of the replantation and one had 20% partial necrosis. All of the cases were managed to conserve the fingernails, which led to acceptable cosmetic results.ConclusionsA composite graft and palmar pocketing in adult cases of fingertip injury constitute a simple, reliable operation for digital amputation extending from the tip to the lunula. These methods had satisfactory results

    Cardioprotective Effect of the SDF-1α/CXCR4 Axis in Ischemic Postconditioning in Isolated Rat Hearts

    Background and Objectives: Information about the role of the stromal cell-derived factor1a (SDF-1 alpha)/chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) axis in ischemic postconditioning (IPOC) is currently limited. We hypothesized that the SDF-1 alpha/CXCR4 signaling pathway is directly involved in the cardioprotective effect of IPOC. Methods: Isolated rat hearts were divided into four groups. The control group was subjected to 30-min of regional ischemia and 2-hour of reperfusion (n=12). The IPOC group was induced with 6 cycles of 10-second reperfusion and 10-second global ischemia (n=8) in each cycle. The CXCR4 antagonist, AMD3100, was applied before reperfusion in the IPOC group (AMD+IPOC group, n=11) and control group (AMD group, n=9). Hemodynamic changes with electrocardiography were monitored and infarct size was measured. The SDF-1 alpha, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine kinase (CK) concentrations in perfusate were measured. We also analyzed extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and Akt phosphorylation state expression. Results: IPOC significantly reduced infarct size, but AMD3100 attenuated the infarct reducing effect of IPOC. IPOC significantly decreased LDH and CK, but these effects were reversed by AMD3100. ERK1/2 and Akt phosphorylation increased with IPOC and these effects were blocked by AMD3100. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, SDF-1 alpha/CXCR4 signaling may be involved in IPOC cardioprotection and this signaling pathway couples to the ERK1/2 and Akt pathways.111Ysciescopuskc
