Exploring potential of crowdsourced geographic information in studies of active travel and health: Strava data and cycling behaviour
In development of sustainable transportation and green city, policymakers encourage people to commute by cycling and walking instead of motor vehicles in cities. One the one hand, cycling and walking enables decrease in air pollution emissions. On the other hand, cycling and walking offer health benefits by increasing people’s physical activity. Earlier studies on investigating spatial patterns of active travel (cycling and walking) are limited by lacks of spatially fine-grained data. In recent years, with the development of information and communications technology, GPS-enabled devices are popular and portable. With smart phones or smart watches, people are able to record their cycling or walking GPS traces when they are moving. A large number of cyclists and pedestrians upload their GPS traces to sport social media to share their historical traces with other people. Those sport social media thus become a potential source for spatially fine-grained cycling and walking data. Very recently, Strava Metro offer aggregated cycling and walking data with high spatial granularity. Strava Metro aggregated a large amount of cycling and walking GPS traces of Strava users to streets or intersections across a city. Accordingly, as a kind of crowdsourced geographic information, the aggregated data is useful for investigating spatial patterns of cycling and walking activities, and thus is of high potential in understanding cycling or walking behavior at a large spatial scale. This study is a start of demonstrating usefulness of Strava Metro data for exploring cycling or walking patterns at a large scal

The oscillation-based test structure is a vectorless output test strategy easily extendable to built-in self-test. The proposed methodology converts filter under test into a quadrature oscillator using very simple techniques and measures the output frequency. The oscillation frequency may be considered as a digital signal and it can be evaluated using digital circuitry therefore the test time is very small. These characteristics imply that the proposed method is very suitable for catastrophic and parametric faults testing and also effective in detecting single and multiple faults. The validity of the proposed method has been verified using comparison between faulty and fault-free simulation results of two integrator loop and Tow-Thomas filters. Simulation results in 0.25 mum CMOS technology show that the proposed oscillation-based test strategy for OTA-C filters has 87% fault coverage and with a minimum number of extra components, requires a negligible area overhead

The filter is implemented using a fully-differential linear, high performance operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) based on cross-coupled pairs. PSpice simulations in a standard TSMC 0.25 μm CMOS process and with a single 5 V power supply have shown that the cut-off frequency of the filter without and with gain boost ranges from 8-32 MHz and 15-100 MHz, respectively. With gain boost, total harmonic distortion (THD) for a differential input voltage Vid of 315 mVpp at 1 MHz is less than -40 dB, dynamic range at 1% THD is over 55 dB, output noise with bandwidth 500 MHz is only 300 μVRMS, and power consumption is 322 mW

Self-organizing peer-to-peer social networks
This is the author's accepted manuscript. The final published article is available from the link below. Copyright @ 2008 The Authors.Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems provide a new solution to distributed information and resource sharing because of its outstanding properties in decentralization, dynamics, flexibility, autonomy, and cooperation, summarized as DDFAC in this paper. After a detailed analysis of the current P2P literature, this paper suggests to better exploit peer social relationships and peer autonomy to achieve efficient P2P structure design. Accordingly, this paper proposes Self-organizing peer-to-peer social networks (SoPPSoNs) to self-organize distributed peers in a decentralized way, in which neuron-like agents following extended Hebbian rules found in the brain activity represent peers to discover useful peer connections. The self-organized networks capture social associations of peers in resource sharing, and hence are called P2P social networks. SoPPSoNs have improved search speed and success rate as peer social networks are correctly formed. This has been verified through tests on real data collected from the Gnutella system. Analysis on the Gnutella data has verified that social associations of peers in reality are directed, asymmetric and weighted, validating the design of SoPPSoN. The tests presented in this paper have also evaluated the scalability of SoPPSoN, its performance under varied initial network connectivity and the effects of different learning rules.National Natural Science of Foundation of Chin

The oscillation-based test structure is a vectorless output test strategy easily extendable to built-in self-test. During test mode, the filter under test is converted into an oscillator by establishing the oscillation condition in its transfer function. The oscillator frequency can be measured using digital circuitry and deviations from the cut-off frequency indicate the faulty behaviour of the filter. The proposed method is suitable for both catastrophic and parametric fault diagnosis as well as effective in detecting single and multiple faults. The validity of the proposed method has been verified using comparison between faulty and fault-free simulation results of KHN OTA-C filter. Simulation results in 0.25mum CMOS technology show that the proposed oscillation-based test strategy has 84% fault coverage and with a minimum number of extra components, requires a negligible area overhead.Final Published versio
Discussion on `Characterization of 1-3 piezoelectric polymer composites - a numerical and analytical evaluation procedure for thickness mode vibrations' by C.V. Madhusudhana Rao, G. Prasad, Condens. Matter Phys., 2010, Vol.13, No.1, 13703
In the paper entitled "Characterization of 1-3 piezoelectric polymer
composites - a numerical and analytical evaluation procedure for thickness mode
vibrations", the dependence of the thickness electromechanical coupling
coefficient on the aspect ratio of piezoceramic fibers is studied by finite
element simulation for various volume fractions of piezoceramic fibers in a 1-3
composite. The accuracy of the results is questionable because the boundary
condition claiming that `predefined displacements are applied perpendicularly
on plane on all nodes' is not suitable for the analysis of 1-3 composite
with comparatively large aspect ratio from 0.2 to 1. A discussion regarding
this problem and the suggested corrections are presented in this paper.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

A new channel estimation approach is proposed using the dedicated pilot subcarriers defined at constant intervals by the WiMax standard. The estimation method has low computation as only linear operations are needed due to orthogonal pilot coding. The performances of the proposed method have been demonstrated by extensive computer simulations. For the OFDM system with two transmit antennas and one to four receive antennas and using QPSK modulation, the simulated results under different Stanford University Interim (SUI) channels show that the proposed method has only a 4dB loss compared to the ideal case where the channel is known at the receiver

A sparse semi-blind source identification method and its application to Raman spectroscopy for explosives detection
Rapid and reliable detection and identification of unknown chemical substances are critical to homeland security. It is challenging to identify chemical components from a wide range of explosives. There are two key steps involved. One is a non-destructive and informative spectroscopic technique for data acquisition. The other is an associated library of reference features along with a computational method for feature matching and meaningful detection within or beyond the library. In this paper, we develop a new iterative method to identify unknown substances from mixture samples of Raman spectroscopy. In the first step, a constrained least squares method decomposes the data into a sum of linear combination of the known components and a non-negative residual. In the second step, a sparse and convex blind source separation method extracts components geometrically from the residuals. Verification based on the library templates or expert knowledge helps to confirm these components. If necessary, the confirmed meaningful components are fed back into step one to refine the residual and then step two extracts possibly more hidden components. The two steps may be iterated until no more components can be identified. We illustrate the proposed method in processing a set of the so called swept wavelength optical resonant Raman spectroscopy experimental data by a satisfactory blind extraction of a priori unknown chemical explosives from mixture samples. We also test the method on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra for chemical compounds identification. © 2013 Published by Elsevier B.V
