An electronic healthcare record server implemented in PostgreSQL
This paper describes the implementation of an Electronic Healthcare Record server inside a PostgreSQL relational database without dependency on any further middleware infrastructure. The five-part international standard for communicating healthcare records (ISO EN 13606) is used as the information basis for the design of the server. We describe some of the features that this standard demands that are provided by the server, and other areas where assumptions about the durability of communications or the presence of middleware lead to a poor fit. Finally, we discuss the use of the server in two real-world scenarios including a commercial application
Aqua(furan-2-carboxylato-κO)(furan-2-carboxylato-κ2 O,O′)(1,10-phenanthroline-κ2 N,N′)copper(II) methanol hemisolvate
The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Cu(C5H3O3)2(C12H8N2)2(H2O)]·0.5CH3OH, contains two CuII complex molecules and one methanol solvent molecule with the metal centres in strongly distorted octahedral coordination. The coordinated water molecule is involved in intermolecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonding, which links the complex molecules into chains propagating along the c axis. Neighbouring chains interact further via π–π interactions between the aromatic rings of 1,10-phenanthroline fragments [centroid–centroid distances = 3.726 (4) and 3.750 (4) Å]
An multi-agent solution for student centred learning
In this paper, we present a novel integrated web-based multi-agent system architecture to facilitate student-centred learning. Learning materials are designed and organized in Learning Objects to satisfy different learning requirements. Each agent controls a specific part of the system in order to make adaptive and individual decisions for students. Students’ interactions with the environment and agents, and the dialogues between the agents, take into consideration individual learning styles. This adaptive pedagogical agent system operates in a distributed environment, and is customized for individual students
An innovative use of learning objects and learning style in pedagogic agent systems
Adaptivity in education is increasingly demanded in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the learning process, but few intelligent learning systems exist which are dynamic and able to provide personalized learning materials to satisfy individual students’ requirements. In an attempt to overcome these limitations, the authors have developed an agent-based learning system that incorporates learning objects to facilitate personalization, and is based on a learning style theory as the pedagogic foundation for adaptivity. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of the system, focusing on the use of learning objects and learning styles. We present a novel approach to the incorporation of learning style theory and learning objects, and evaluation indicates that the approach is able to provide personalized learning materials and improve the adaptivity in learning systems
An agent-based approach to dynamic adaptive learning
Dynamic adaptive learning and teaching strategies are increasingly demanded in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the education process, but few learning systems exist which are dynamic and able to satisfy individual students. In an attempt to overcome these limitations, we propose a multi-agent architecture that provides the key functions of a dynamic and adaptive learning system. Learning style schemes are used to adapt to students' individual needs, and learning objects provide effective reuse and structuring of material. The incorporation of agents and learning objects is based on learning style — a pedagogic foundation for adaptivity — and this is one of the main contributions of this research. The system has been analysed through several functional experiments, and the analysis of a simulation study indicates that the approach is able to handle individual students' requirements and improve the dynamic adaptivity in education systems
