Reaction of the pro-ligand α,α,α′,α′-tetra(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl-p-)xylene-para-tetraphenol (p-L¹H₄) with two equivalents of [NbCl₅] in refluxing toluene afforded, after work-up, the complex {[NbCl₃(NCMe)]₂(μ-p-L¹)}·6MeCN (1·6MeCN). When the reaction was conducted in the presence of excess ethanol, the orange complex {[NbCl₂(OEt)(NCMe)]₂(μ-p-L¹)}·3½MeCN·0.614toluene (2·3½MeCN·0.614toluene) was formed. A similar reaction using [TaCl₅] afforded the yellow complex {[TaCl₂(OEt)(NCMe)]₂(μ-p-L¹)}·5MeCN (3·5MeCN). In the case of the meta pro-ligand, namely α,α,α′,α′tetra(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl-m-)xylene-meta-tetraphenol (m-L²H₄) only the use of [Nb(O)Cl₃(NCMe)₂] led to the isolation of crystalline material, namely the orange bis-chelate complex {[Nb(NCMe)Cl(m-L²H₂)₂]}·3½MeCN (4·3½MeCN) or {[Nb(NCMe)Cl(m-L²H₂)₂]}·5MeCN (4·5MeCN). The molecular structures of 1–4 and the tetraphenols L¹H₄ and m-L²H₄·2MeCN have been determined. Complexes 1–4 have been screened as pre-catalysts for the ring opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone, both with and without benzyl alcohol or solvent present, and at various temperatures; conversion rates were mostly excellent (>96%) with good control either at >100 °C over 20 h (in toluene) or 1 h (neat)

Reaction of Me₃Al (two equivalents) with ortho-, meta- or para-anisidine, (OMe)(NH₂)C₆H₄, affords the complexes {[1,2-(OMe),NC₆H₄(μ-Me₂Al)](μ-Me₂Al)}₂ (1), [1,3-(Me₃AlOMe),NHC₆H₄(μ-Me₂Al)]2 (2) or [1,4-(Me₃AlOMe),NHC₆H₄(μ-Me₂Al)]₂ (3), respectively. The molecular structures of 1–3 have been determined and all three complexes were found to be highly active for the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone. 1 was found highly active either with or without benzyl alcohol present; at various temperatures, the activity order 1 > 2 ≈ 3 was observed. For the ROP of rac-lactide results for 1–3 were poor

Using Megamaser Disks to Probe Black Hole Accretion

We examine the alignment between H_2O megamaser disks on sub-pc scales with circumnuclear disks and bars on <500 pc scales observed with HST/WFC3. The HST imaging reveals young stars, indicating the presence of gas. The megamaser disks are not well aligned with the circumnuclear bars or disks as traced by stars in the HST images. We speculate on the implications of the observed misalignments for fueling supermassive black holes in gas-rich spiral galaxies. In contrast, we find a strong preference for the rotation axes of the megamaser disks to align with radio continuum jets observed on >50 pc scales, in those galaxies for which radio continuum detections are available. Sub-arcsecond observations of molecular gas with ALMA will enable a more complete understanding of the interplay between circumnuclear structures.Comment: Error in Figure 4 corrected, references added. 7 pages, 4 figures, to be published in the Astrophysical Journa

Pediatric Plastic Bronchitis: Case Report and Retrospective Comparative Analysis of Epidemiology and Pathology

Plastic bronchitis (PB) is a pathologic condition in which airway casts develop in the tracheobronchial tree causing airway obstruction. There is no standard treatment strategy for this uncommon condition. We report an index patient treated using an emerging multimodal strategy of directly instilled and inhaled tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) as well as 13 other cases of PB at our institution between 2000 and 2012. The majority of cases (n = 8) occurred in patients with congenital heart disease. Clinical presentations, treatments used, histopathology of the casts, and patient outcomes are reviewed. Further discussion is focused on the epidemiology of plastic bronchitis and a systematic approach to the histologic classification of casts. Comorbid conditions identified in this study included congenital heart disease (8), pneumonia (3), and asthma (2). Our institutional prevalence rate was 6.8 per 100,000 patients, and our case fatality rate was 7%

By varying the reaction conditions, the reaction of [W(eg)₃] (eg = 1,2-ethanediolato) with p-tert-butylcalix[n]areneHn (n = 6 or 8) in refluxing toluene affords, following work-up, a number of products which have been fully characterized. From the reaction of p-tert-butylcalix[6]areneH₆ with one or two equivalents of [W(eg)₃], only the oxo-bridged complex {[W(eg)]₂(μ-O)p-tert-butylcalix[6]arene} (1) could be isolated, whereas the use of four equivalents of [W(eg)₃], in the presence of molecular sieves, afforded {[W(eg)₂]₂p-tert-butylcalix[6]areneH₂}·2MeCN (2); molecules of 2 pack in bi-layers. Under similar conditions, use of one or two equivalents of [W(eg)₃] and p-tert-butylcalix[8]areneH₈ afforded {[W(eg)]₂p-tert-butylcalix[8]arene}·MeCN (3) in which each tungsten centre was bound by four calixarene oxygens. By contrast, the small orange prisms resulting from the use of four equivalents of [W(eg)₃] and p-tert-butylcalix[8]areneH₈ were shown by synchrotron radiation to be a mixture of two isomers (4a/4b·3.5MeCN). In the major isomer {1,2-[W(eg)₂]₂p-tert-butylcalix[8]areneH₄} (4a), two tungsten centres bind to neighbouring sets of phenolate oxygens, whereas in the minor isomer {1,3-[W(eg)₂]₂p-tert-butylcalix[8]areneH₄} (4b), there is a protonated phenolic group between the two pairs of phenolate oxygens bound to tungsten; the major:minor ratio is about 83:17. Use of p-tert-butyltetrahomodioxacalix[6]areneH₆ with two equivalents of [W(eg)₃] resulted in the isolation of {[WO(eg)]₂p-tert-butyltetrahomodioxacalix[6]areneH₂} (5·0.83toluene·MeCN), in which each dimethyleneoxa bridge is bound to an oxotungsten(VI) centre. Complexes 1–5, together with the known complex [W(eg)p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene] (6), have been screened for their ability to ring open polymerize (ROP) ε-caprolactone; for 1, 2 and 5, 6 conversion rates were good (>88%) at 110 °C over 12 or 24 h, whereas the calix[8]arene complexes 3 and 4 under the same conditions were inactive

Electronic properties of alkali-metal loaded zeolites -- a "supercrystal" Mott insulator

First-principles band calculations are performed for the first time for an open-structured zeolite (LTA) with guest atoms (potassium) introduced in their cages. A surprisingly simple band structure emerges, which indicates that this system may be regarded as a "supercrystal", where each cluster of guest atoms with diameter ∼\sim10\AA acts as a "superatom" with well-defined ss- and pp-like orbitals, which in turn form the bands around the Fermi energy. The calculated Coulomb and exchange energies for these states turn out to be in the strongly-correlated regime. With the dynamical mean-field theory we show the system should be on the Mott-insulator side, and, on a magnetic phase diagram for degenerate-orbital systems, around the ferromagnetic regime, in accord with experimental results. We envisage this class of systems can provide a new avenue for materials design.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Predicting intraurban airborne PM1.0-trace elements in a port city : Land use regression by ordinary least squares and a machine learning algorithm

Airborne particulate matter (PM) has been associated with cardiovascular and respiratory morbidity and mortality, and there is some evidence that spatially varying metals found in PM may contribute to adverse health effects. We developed spatially refined models for PM trace elements using ordinary least squares land use regression (OLS-LUR) and machine leaning random forest land-use regression (RF-LUR). Two-week integrated measurements of PM1.0 (median aerodiameter < 1.0 μm) were collected at 50 sampling sites during fall (2010), winter (2011), and summer (2011) in the Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia, Canada. PM1.0 filters were analyzed for metals and trace elements using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. OLS- and RF-LUR models were developed for approximately 30 PM1.0 trace elements in each season. Model predictors included industrial, commercial, and institutional/ government/ military land use, roadways, shipping, other transportation sources, and wind rose information. RF generated more accurate models than OLS for most trace elements based on 5-fold cross validation. On average, summer models had the highest cross validation R2 (OLS-LUR = 0.40, RF-LUR = 0.46), while fall had the lowest (OLS-LUR = 0.27, RF-LUR = 0.31). Many OLS-LUR models displayed overprediction in the final exposure surface. In contrast, RF-LUR models did not exhibit overpredictions. Taking overpredictions and cross validation performances into account, OLS-LUR performed better than RF-LUR in roughly 20% of the seasonal trace element models. RF-LUR models provided more interpretable predictors in most cases. Seasonal predictors varied, likely due to differences in seasonal distribution of trace elements related to source activity, and meteorology

Comparison of Non-Laser and Laser Transvenous Lead Extraction: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

AIMS: Transvenous lead extraction (TLE) is performed using non-laser and laser techniques with overall high efficacy and safety. Variation in outcomes between the two approaches does exist with limited comparative evidence in the literature. We sought to compare non-laser and laser TLE in a meta-analysis. METHODS AND RESULTS: We searched Medline, Embase, Scopus, ClinicalTrials.gov, and CENTRAL databases for TLE studies published between 1991 and 2021. From the included 68 studies, safety and efficacy data were carefully evaluated and extracted. Aggregated cases of outcomes were used to calculate odds ratio (OR), and pooled rates were synthesized from eligible studies to compare non-laser and laser techniques. Subgroup comparison of rotational tool and laser extraction was also performed. Non-laser in comparison with laser had lower procedural mortality (pooled rate 0% vs. 0.1%, P \u3c 0.01), major complications (pooled rate 0.7% vs. 1.7%, P \u3c 0.01), and superior vena cava (SVC) injury (pooled rate 0% vs. 0.5%, P \u3c 0.001), with higher complete success (pooled rate 96.5% vs. 93.8%, P \u3c 0.01). Non-laser comparatively to laser was more likely to achieve clinical [OR 2.16 (1.77-2.63), P \u3c 0.01] and complete [OR 1.87 (1.69-2.08), P \u3c 0.01] success, with a lower procedural mortality risk [OR 1.6 (1.02-2.5), P \u3c 0.05]. In the subgroup analysis, rotational tool compared with laser achieved greater complete success (pooled rate 97.4% vs. 95%, P \u3c 0.01) with lower SVC injury (pooled rate 0% vs. 0.7%, P \u3c 0.01). CONCLUSION: Non-laser TLE is associated with a better safety and efficacy profile when compared with laser methods. There is a greater risk of SVC injury associated with laser sheath extraction

Apresentam-se as conclusões do presente estudo, algumas limitações deste e futuras linhas de investigação. Tecem-se também algumas considerações sobre as implicações do estudo para as práticas de gestão de carreira. This work is an exploratory study about the career concerns and the dimensions of adaptability, based on the Perspective of the Career Development of Donald Super and the Constructivist Perspective of Mark Savickas. It is also intended to contribute to the research on the Career Adapt-Abilities Inventory, which is still under investigation as part of an International Project. The Career Concerns Inventory and the Career Adapt-Abilities Inventory were applied to a sample of 75 adult candidates to Sergeants and Officers of the Portuguese Army. The results seem to confirm the research hypotheses, pointing to the relation between the variable age and the developmental tasks of the Exploration and Establishment career phases, to the predominance of the dimensions Cooperation, and Confidence and also to the relation between career concerns and adaptability dimensions. The findings of this study, some of its limitations and future research paths are presented. Some reflections are also discussed in what concerns the study's implications for the career management practices

Neonatal hyperoxia promotes asthma-like features through IL-33–dependent ILC2 responses

Background Premature infants often require oxygen supplementation and, therefore, are exposed to oxidative stress. Following oxygen exposure, preterm infants frequently develop chronic lung disease and have a significantly increased risk of asthma. Objective We sought to identify the underlying mechanisms by which neonatal hyperoxia promotes asthma development. Methods Mice were exposed to neonatal hyperoxia followed by a period of room air recovery. A group of mice was also intranasally exposed to house dust mite antigen. Assessments were performed at various time points for evaluation of airway hyperresponsiveness, eosinophilia, mucus production, inflammatory gene expression, and TH and group 2 innate lymphoid cell (ILC2) responses. Sera from term- and preterm-born infants were also collected and levels of IL-33 and type 2 cytokines were measured. Results Neonatal hyperoxia induced asthma-like features including airway hyperresponsiveness, mucus hyperplasia, airway eosinophilia, and type 2 pulmonary inflammation. In addition, neonatal hyperoxia promoted allergic TH responses to house dust mite exposure. Elevated IL-33 levels and ILC2 responses were observed in the lungs most likely due to oxidative stress caused by neonatal hyperoxia. IL-33 receptor signaling and ILC2s were vital for the induction of asthma-like features following neonatal hyperoxia. Serum IL-33 levels correlated significantly with serum levels of IL-5 and IL-13 but not IL-4 in preterm infants. Conclusions These data demonstrate that an axis involving IL-33 and ILC2s is important for the development of asthma-like features following neonatal hyperoxia and suggest therapeutic potential for targeting IL-33, ILC2s, and oxidative stress to prevent and/or treat asthma development related to prematurity
