    Intermediate-mass black holes in dwarf galaxies out to redshift \sim 2.4 in the Chandra COSMOS Legacy Survey

    We present a sample of 40 AGN in dwarf galaxies at redshifts zz \lesssim 2.4. The galaxies are drawn from the \textit{Chandra} COSMOS-Legacy survey as having stellar masses 107M3×10910^{7}\leq M_{*}\leq3 \times 10^{9} M_{\odot}. Most of the dwarf galaxies are star-forming. After removing the contribution from star formation to the X-ray emission, the AGN luminosities of the 40 dwarf galaxies are in the range L0.510keV10391044L_\mathrm{0.5-10 keV} \sim10^{39} - 10^{44} erg s1^{-1}. With 12 sources at z>0.5z > 0.5, our sample constitutes the highest-redshift discovery of AGN in dwarf galaxies. The record-holder is cid\_1192, at z=2.39z = 2.39 and with L0.510keV1044L_\mathrm{0.5-10 keV} \sim 10^{44} erg s1^{-1}. One of the dwarf galaxies has M=6.6×107M_\mathrm{*} = 6.6 \times 10^{7} M_{\odot} and is the least massive galaxy found so far to host an AGN. All the AGN are of type 2 and consistent with hosting intermediate-mass black holes (BHs) with masses 104105\sim 10^{4} - 10^{5} M_{\odot} and typical Eddington ratios >1%> 1\%. We also study the evolution, corrected for completeness, of AGN fraction with stellar mass, X-ray luminosity, and redshift in dwarf galaxies out to zz = 0.7. We find that the AGN fraction for 109<M3×10910^{9}< M_{*}\leq3 \times 10^{9} M_{\odot} and LX10411042L_\mathrm{X} \sim 10^{41}-10^{42} erg s1^{-1} is \sim0.4\% for zz \leq 0.3 and that it decreases with X-ray luminosity and decreasing stellar mass. Unlike massive galaxies, the AGN fraction seems to decrease with redshift, suggesting that AGN in dwarf galaxies evolve differently than those in high-mass galaxies. Mindful of potential caveats, the results seem to favor a direct collapse formation mechanism for the seed BHs in the early Universe.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Covariant Helicity-Coupling Amplitudes: A New Formulation

    We have worked out covariant amplitudes for any two-body decay of a resonance with an arbitrary non-zero mass, which involves arbitrary integer spins in the initial and the final states. One key new ingredient for this work is the application of the total intrinsic spin operator S\vec S which is given directly in terms of the generators of the Poincar\'e group. Using the results of this study, we show how to explore the Lorentz factors which appear naturally, if the momentum-space wave functions are used to form the covariant decay amplitudes. We have devised a method of constructing our covariant decay amplitudes, such that they lead to the Zemach amplitudes when the Lorentz factors are set one

    We report Cu and La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the title compound that reveal an inhomogeneous glassy behavior of the spin dynamics. A low temperature peak in the La spin lattice relaxation rate and the ``wipeout'' of Cu intensity both arise from these slow electronic spin fluctuations that reveal a distribution of activation energies.     Learning Mathematics with Technology: The Influence of Virtual Manipulatives on Different Achievement Groups

    This study examined the influence of virtual manipulatives on different achievement groups during a teaching experiment in four fifth-grade classrooms. During a two-week unit focusing on two rational number concepts (fraction equivalence and fraction addition with unlike denominators) one low achieving, two average achieving, and one high achieving group participated in two instructional treatments (three groups used virtual manipulatives and one group used physical manipulatives). Data sources included pre- and post-tests of students’ mathematical content knowledge and videotapes of classroom sessions. Results of paired samples t-tests examining the three groups using virtual manipulatives indicated a statistically significant overall gain following the treatment. Follow-up paired samples individual t-tests on the low, average, and high achieving groups indicated a statistically significant gain for students in the low achieving group, but only numerical gains for students in the average and high achieving groups. There were no significant differences between the average achieving student groups in the virtual manipulatives and physical manipulatives treatments. Qualitative data gathered during the study indicated that the different achievement groups experienced the virtual manipulatives in different ways, with the high achieving group recognizing patterns quickly and transitioning to the use of symbols, while the average and low achieving groups relied heavily on pictorial representations as they methodically worked stepby- step through processes and procedures with mathematical symbols

    Mass-Radius Relation for Magnetic White Dwarfs

    Recently, several white dwarfs with very strong surface magnetic fields have been observed. In this paper we explore the possibility that such stars could have sufficiently strong internal fields to alter their structure. We obtain a revised white dwarf mass-radius relation in the presence of strong internal magnetic fields. We first derive the equation of state for a fully degenerate ideal electron gas in a magnetic field using an Euler-MacLaurin expansion.     The Effects of Disclosure Type and Audit Committee Expertise on Chief Audit Executives’ Tolerance for Financial Misstatements

    This study involves an experiment where 73 Chief Audit Executives and deputy Chief Audit Executives determine the amount of adjustment required to correct a misstatement. We manipulate the financial reporting location of the misstatement (recognized vs. disclosed) and the level of audit committee expertise (high vs. low). The results indicate that financial reporting location has significant effects on internal auditors’ decisions to correct misstatements. Specifically, internal auditors are more willing to waive disclosed misstatements relative to recognized misstatements. Contrary to expectations, the results do not indicate that increased audit committee expertise and associated increases in audit committee members’ perceived powers cause internal auditors to be less willing to waive misstatements

    Putative spin liquid in the triangle-based iridate Ba3_3IrTi2_2O9_9

    We report on thermodynamic, magnetization, and muon spin relaxation measurements of the strong spin-orbit coupled iridate Ba3_3IrTi2_2O9_9, which constitutes a new frustration motif made up a mixture of edge- and corner-sharing triangles. In spite of strong antiferromagnetic exchange interaction of the order of 100~K, we find no hint for long-range magnetic order down to 23 mK. The magnetic specific heat data unveil the TT-linear and -squared dependences at low temperatures below 1~K. At the respective temperatures, the zero-field muon spin relaxation features a persistent spin dynamics, indicative of unconventional low-energy excitations. A comparison to the 4d4d isostructural compound Ba3_3RuTi2_2O9_9 suggests that a concerted interplay of compass-like magnetic interactions and frustrated geometry promotes a dynamically fluctuating state in a triangle-based iridate.Comment: Physical Review B accepte

    A Calculation of Baryon Diffusion Constant in Hot and Dense Hadronic Matter Based on an Event Generator URASiMA

    We evaluate thermodynamical quantities and transport coefficients of a dense and hot hadronic matter based on an event generator URASiMA (Ultra-Relativistic AA collision Simulator based on Multiple Scattering Algorithm). The statistical ensembles in equilibrium with fixed temperature and chemical potential are generated by imposing periodic boundary condition to the simulation of URASiMA, where energy density and baryon number density is conserved. Achievement of the thermal equilibrium and the chemical equilibrium are confirmed by the common value of slope parameter in the energy distributions and the saturation of the numbers of contained particles, respectively. By using the generated ensembles, we investigate the temperature dependence and the chemical potential dependence of the baryon diffusion constant of a dense and hot hadronic matter.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, LaTeX2

    Missing the target: including perspectives of women with overweight and obesity to inform stigma-reduction strategies

    OBJECTIVE: Pervasive weight stigma and discrimination have led to ongoing calls for efforts to reduce this bias. Despite increasing research on stigma-reduction strategies, perspectives of individuals who have experienced weight stigma have rarely been included to inform this research. The present study conducted a systematic examination of women with high body weight to assess their perspectives about a broad range of strategies to reduce weight-based stigma. METHODS: Women with overweight or obesity (N = 461) completed an online survey in which they evaluated the importance, feasibility and potential impact of 35 stigma-reduction strategies in diverse settings. Participants (91.5% who reported experiencing weight stigma) also completed self-report measures assessing experienced and internalized weight stigma. RESULTS: Most participants assigned high importance to all stigma-reduction strategies, with school-based and healthcare approaches accruing the highest ratings. Adding weight stigma to existing anti-harassment workplace training was rated as the most impactful and feasible strategy. The family environment was viewed as an important intervention target, regardless of participants\u27 experienced or internalized stigma. CONCLUSION: These findings underscore the importance of including people with stigmatized identities in stigma-reduction research; their insights provide a necessary and valuable contribution that can inform ways to reduce weight-based inequities and prioritize such efforts
