    The Virginia Institute of Marine Science, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Soil and Water Conservation, has identified as one of its major goals the systematic study of hydrodynamic processes that affect recreational, shoreline and benthic resources in the coastal zone of the Commonwealth. In pursuit of that goal, a long-term study of the wave climate in the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay was initiated in 1988 with support from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration through the Coastal Zone Management Program administered by the Virginia Council on the Environment (Grant Ho. HA88AA-D-CZ092). Past knowledge of wave properties in the Chesapeake Bay region has been conspicuous in its lack of an observational basis. Although inner shelf and deep water wave measurements have been made outside the Chesapeake Bay entrance, none of these have produced reliable directional information (Seymour et al., 1985). Therefore, before addressing certain long-term wave monitoring objectives, it was deemed essential to develop a basis for them by obtaining a representative (year-long) series of wave observations at one or more selected locations. The first of these has recently been completed for a station designated as VIMS BAY! located near Thimble Shoals to the west of the Chesapeake Bay entrance (Fig. 1).     Mass-Radius Relation for Magnetic White Dwarfs

    Recently, several white dwarfs with very strong surface magnetic fields have been observed. In this paper we explore the possibility that such stars could have sufficiently strong internal fields to alter their structure. We obtain a revised white dwarf mass-radius relation in the presence of strong internal magnetic fields. We first derive the equation of state for a fully degenerate ideal electron gas in a magnetic field using an Euler-MacLaurin expansion. We use this to obtain the mass-radius relation for magnetic 4^{4}He, 12^{12}C, and 56^{56}Fe white dwarfs of uniform composition.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures and 1 table, To appear in Ap

    As the harvest of timber from native forests has contracted in north Queensland, the traditional supply chain from forest to final consumer has to a large extent broken down. As a result, landholders and non-farmer investors cannot assume that timber markets will automatically exist when they have trees ready for harvest. A wide variety of research has been carried out which is relevant to timber marketing in north Queensland. Surveys of timber millers, cabinet-makers and their staff, and purchasers of timber products, as well as financial modeling of timber milling, have been used to derive information about timber markets in north Queensland.     Putative spin liquid in the triangle-based iridate Ba3_3IrTi2_2O9_9

    We report on thermodynamic, magnetization, and muon spin relaxation measurements of the strong spin-orbit coupled iridate Ba3_3IrTi2_2O9_9, which constitutes a new frustration motif made up a mixture of edge- and corner-sharing triangles. In spite of strong antiferromagnetic exchange interaction of the order of 100~K, we find no hint for long-range magnetic order down to 23 mK. The magnetic specific heat data unveil the TT-linear and -squared dependences at low temperatures below 1~K. At the respective temperatures, the zero-field muon spin relaxation features a persistent spin dynamics, indicative of unconventional low-energy excitations. A comparison to the 4d4d isostructural compound Ba3_3RuTi2_2O9_9 suggests that a concerted interplay of compass-like magnetic interactions and frustrated geometry promotes a dynamically fluctuating state in a triangle-based iridate.Comment: Physical Review B accepte

    Study of the neutron star structure in strong magnetic fields including the anomalous magnetic moments

    We study the effects of strong magnetic fields on the neutron star structure. If the interior field of a star is on the same order of the surface field currently observed, the influences of the magnetic field on the star mass and radius are negligible. If one assumes that the internal magnetic field can be as large as that estimated from the scalar virial theorem, considerable effects can be induced. The maximum mass of stars is arisen substantially while the central density is largely suppressed.     Spin Dynamics in the LTT Phase of ~1/8 Doped Single Crystal La_{1.67}Eu_{0.2}Sr_{0.13}CuO_4

    We present La and Cu NMR relaxation measurements in single crystal La_{1.67}Eu_{0.2}Sr_{0.13}CuO_4. A strong peak in the La spin-lattice relaxation rate observed in the spin ordered state is well-described by the BPP mechanism[1] and arises from continuous slowing of electronic spin fluctuations with decreasing temperature; these spin fluctuations exhibit XY-like anisotropy in the ordered state. The spin pseudogap is enhanced by the static charge-stripe order in the LTT phase.Comment: Four pages, three figure
