    New ways of looking into health and hygiene promotional activities in Lao PDR

    Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) is one of the poorest countries in South-East Asia and is trying to move from a land-locked country to a land-linked country. Rural water supply, sanitation, health and hygiene promotion are principal focus areas for Lao PDR for her National Growth and Poverty Eradication Strategy. The National Centre for Environmental Health and Water Supply (commonly known as Nam Saat) is responsible for the rural water supply and sanitation (RWSS) sector in Lao PDR, which includes facilitating for planning and implementation of the RWSS programme. Many major steps have been taken to put forward the agenda. However, many more steps need to be taken. This paper briefly highlights the background of health and hygiene promotional activities in Lao PDR, including lessons learned on new ways of looking into health and hygiene promotional activities that have been undertaken in Lao PDR

    Quantitative determination, by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, of aromatase mRNA in invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast

    BACKGROUND: Estrogen is a mitogenic factor that is implicated in the genesis and progression of breast cancer via its binding to estrogen receptor (ER)-α. Synthesis of estrogen in situ is believed to be catalyzed mainly by aromatase. Previous studies comparing the relative contributions from tumor cells and stromal cells to local estrogen synthesis, as assessed by immunohistochemical analysis, were quite controversial and no consistent relationship was found between the presence of aromatase and any clinicopathologic factor. In addition, previous studies into aromatase gene expression and clinicopathologic factors are limited. METHODS: We assessed the level of expression of aromatase mRNA, using quantitative real-time RT-PCR, in 162 cases of invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast. Associations between aromatase expression and different clinicopathologic factors were sought. RESULTS: It was found that aromatase mRNA was expressed at significantly higher levels in patients older than 50 years, in those without axillary lymph node involvement, in those with tumor size less than 2 cm, and in ER-α positive tumors. However, no relationship was found between aromatase mRNA expression and any other clinicopathologic factor, including histologic grade and progesterone receptor status. Patients with high levels of expression of aromatase mRNA tended to have a better prognosis than did those patients with low expression. CONCLUSION: These findings imply that ER-α and aromatase may be coexpressed in endocrine responsive patients. They may also indicate that aromatase expression could be a marker of endocrine responsiveness, and it may have prognostic implications for breast cancer progression

    PhaseĂą amplitude coupling between interictal highĂą frequency activity and slow waves in epilepsy surgery

    ObjectiveWe hypothesized that the modulation index (MI), a summary measure of the strength of phaseñ amplitude coupling between highñ frequency activity (>150 Hz) and the phase of slow waves (3ñ 4 Hz), would serve as a useful interictal biomarker for epilepsy presurgical evaluation.MethodsWe investigated 123 patients who underwent focal cortical resection following extraoperative electrocorticography recording and had at least 1 year of postoperative followñ up. We examined whether consideration of MI would improve the prediction of postoperative seizure outcome. MI was measured at each intracranial electrode site during interictal slowñ wave sleep. We compared the accuracy of prediction of patients achieving International League Against Epilepsy class 1 outcome between the full multivariate logistic regression model incorporating MI in addition to conventional clinical, seizure onset zone (SOZ), and neuroimaging variables, and the reduced logistic regression model incorporating all variables other than MI.ResultsNinety patients had class 1 outcome at the time of most recent followñ up (mean followñ up = 5.7 years). The full model had a noteworthy outcome predictive ability, as reflected by regression model fit R2 of 0.409 and area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic plot of 0.838. Incomplete resection of SOZ (P < 0.001), larger number of antiepileptic drugs at the time of surgery (P = 0.007), and larger MI in nonresected tissues relative to that in resected tissue (P = 0.020) were independently associated with a reduced probability of class 1 outcome. The reduced model had a lower predictive ability as reflected by R2 of 0.266 and AUC of 0.767. Anatomical variability in MI existed among nonepileptic electrode sites, defined as those unaffected by magnetic resonance imaging lesion, SOZ, or interictal spike discharges.     Comparative Study on Atmospheric Corrosivity of Under Shelter Exposure in Yangon and Mandalay (Myanmar)

    Corrosion is a degrading process and it is the main degradation problem in building industry around the world. This study emphasises on the corrosivity classification of studied areas and discusses long term prediction for thickness loss of carbon steel and weathering steel under shelter condition. Two locations, Yangon and Mandalay, are selected as study areas in Myanmar. Corrosion rates are measured after one year exposure. The pollutant data of sulphur dioxide and chloride deposition rates are measured according to JIS Z 2382 and the meteorological data are collected by Easy USB data logger. The corrosion rate is classified based on ISO 9223 by evaluating the important atmospheric variables, such as time of wetness, CL- and SO2. The classes of sulphur dioxide and chloride deposition rate can be seen low level for both areas and Time of Wetness (TOW) can be seen τ4 for Yangon and τ3 for Mandalay.So, according to ISO 9223, the corrosivity category for Yangon area is C3 and that for Mandalay area is C2-C3. The actual mass loss for weathering steel is a little more than that of carbon steel in Yangon and adverse condition can be seen in Mandalay after one year period. Then the future corrosion rates of studied areas are discussed based on long time test results from JFE Steel Corporation, Japan. From this, weathering steel is suitable when chloride deposition rate is less than or equal to 0.05 mdd because of its protective properties

    The consensus algorithms were designed to reach agreements in distributed systems trying to maintain a certain tolerance to failures. An application derived from these algorithms is ETCD, a type of key-value storage that provides a safe and reliable way to save data shared in a network of servers, allowing the preser- vation of the information in spite of the possible fall of the involved nodes . My thesis shows the design and operation of these algorithms, and addresses the question of how to man- age the ETCD database and which features involves, as well as recommendations of configuration settings to achieve the best performance of the system. Finally, an academic practice is presented, aimed to network students that would want to have a deeper knowledge about consensus algorithms applications in a distributed system

    Osteoclasts adapt to physioxia perturbation through DNA demethylation

    Oxygen plays an important role in diverse biological processes. However, since quantitation of the partial pressure of cellular oxygen in vivo is challenging, the extent of oxygen perturbation in situ and its cellular response remains underexplored. Using two-photon phosphorescence lifetime imaging microscopy, we determine the physiological range of oxygen tension in osteoclasts of live mice. We find that oxygen tension ranges from 17.4 to 36.4 mmHg, under hypoxic and normoxic conditions, respectively. Physiological normoxia thus corresponds to 5% and hypoxia to 2% oxygen in osteoclasts. Hypoxia in this range severely limits osteoclastogenesis, independent of energy metabolism and hypoxia-inducible factor activity. We observe that hypoxia decreases ten-eleven translocation (TET) activity. Tet2/3 cooperatively induces Prdm1 expression via oxygen-dependent DNA demethylation, which in turn activates NFATc1 required for osteoclastogenesis. Taken together, our results reveal that TET enzymes, acting as functional oxygen sensors, regulate osteoclastogenesis within the physiological range of oxygen tension, thus opening new avenues for research on in vivo response to oxygen perturbation.Nishikawa K., Seno S., Yoshihara T., et al.
