Degradation of proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis cells: Looking beyond the cell voltage increase

The degradation of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis cells is usually measured in a temporal increase of the cell voltage. Although this is sufficient to evaluate the stability of a system, it is less suitable for targeted material development. Thus, an overpotential-specific and temporally resolved electrochemical characterization protocol is proposed. In this the ohmic overpotential is determined with high frequency resistance measurements. These are also used in combination with polarization curves to distinguish between the kinetic and mass transport overpotentials and to determine kinetic key parameters, according to the Butler-Volmer and transition state theory. Complementary electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements further unravel the individual resistances. On this basis, the following statements can already be issued. The major share of the measured cell voltage increase, i.e. degradation, is of apparent nature as it is recovered once lower potentials are applied. It is suggested that this is due to changes in the oxidation states of the iridium-based catalyst. Real degradation occurs in the ohmic and mass transport overpotential mainly at higher current densities and longer operating times. The increasing kinetic overpotential with increasing operating time is primarily potential-driven. Interestingly, both the Tafel slope and the apparent exchange current density slightly increase over time. © 2019 The Author(s). Published by ECS

Einkommensteuerliche Behandlung von Waehrungsgewinnen und -verlusten

Durch die internationale Kapitalallokation entstehen bei flexiblen Wechselkursen Währungsgewinne und Währungsverluste. Diese müssen bei der einkommensteuerlichen Behandlung grenzüberschreitend eingesetzten Kapitals berücksichtigt werden. Der Autor zeigt, wie Kursgewinne und -verluste unter der Zielsetzung von Kapitalexport- beziehungsweise Kapitalimportneutralität besteuert werden sollten. Außerdem werden mit Hilfe der Optionsbewertungstheorie die Auswirkungen asymmetrischer Besteuerung durch das Anrechnungsverfahren auf die Kapitalallokation analysiert. Dabei wird auch der Frage der steuerrechtlichen Quelle von Währungsgewinnen und -verlusten nachgegangen. Vor dem Hintergrund der gewonnenen Erkenntnisse wird das Steuerrecht der USA und Deutschlands betrachtet. In den USA wurde mit der Steu erreform von 1986 eine gesetzliche Grundlage für die einkommensteuerliche Behandlung von Währungsgewinnen und -verlusten geschaffen. Leydig cells express neural cell adhesion molecules in vivo and in vitro

The neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) polypeptides are expressed by numerous tissues during embryonic development, where they are involved in cell-cell interactions. In the adult, NCAM expression is confined to a few cell types, including neurons and peptide-hormone-producing cells. Here we demonstrate that the Leydig cells of the adult rat, mouse, and hamster testes express NCAM as well. Western blotting showed that an NCAM of approximately 120 kDa was present in the adult testes of all three species investigated. This form was also found in freshly isolated mouse Leydig cells and in Leydig cells after 2 days in culture. After 4 days in culture, mouse Leydig cells expressed additional NCAM isoforms of approximately 140 and 180 kDa, indicating changes in alternative splicing of NCAM primary transcripts. Also, NCAM mRNA of all isoforms, as detected by S1-nuclease protection assays, increased with time in culture. The expression of the cell adhesion molecule NCAM by adult Leydig cells may explain the aggregation of Leydig cells in clusters in rodent testes, which could be a prerequisite for functional coordination of groups of Leydig cells. Furthermore, the presence of this neural and endocrine marker may indicate a closer relationship between Leydig cells and neural and peptide-hormone-producing cells than is considered to exist at the present time

Islam has become a major religion in Europe. The challenging question is whether Islam can accept a secular state or not. Some Muslims refer to the so called constitution of Medina. It regards Jews as equal to the Muslims in rights and duties irrespectively of their different religion. The history of Ps.-Sebeos concerning the earliest Muslim conquest of the Holy Land suggests that the rules of the constitution of Medina was still in effect at that time. Jewish texts as well as archaeological and numismatic findings confirm this hypothesis. A radical change seems to have happened during the second Muslim civil war after 691, when an Islamic model of state was imposed.El islam se ha convertido en una religión importante en Europa. El reto es saber si el islam puede aceptar un estado laico o no. Algunos musulmanes remiten a la denominada constitución de Medina. Ésta contempla a los judíos en el mismo nivel que los musulmanes con respecto a los derechos y deberes independientemente de que se trate de una religión distinta. La historia del Ps. Sebeos acerca de la primera conquista islámica de Tierra Santa indica que las normas de la constitución de Medina se hallaba todavía en vigor en esa época.
