    Renal markers in normal and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in Indian women:a pilot study

    Background:Altered renal function is an essential component of the pathophysiological process in pre-eclampsia. Kidneys play an important role in the turnover of low molecular weight substances such as creatinine, uric acid and cystatin C. The present study was undertaken if these serum markers were characteristically altered in Indian pregnant women.Methods: Serum levels were therefore determined in samples from 69 healthy women at term as well as in 27 samples of patients with Pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) and in 20 patients with pre-eclampsia (PE).Results: The levels of all three components were significantly higher in pre-eclamptic patients when compared to healthy controls with the mean ± SD being 1.47 ± 0.9 vs. 1.06± 0.2 for cystatin C, 0.95 ±0.2 vs. 0.67 ±0.1 for creatinine and 6.13± 1.8 vs. 4.28 ±1.1 for uric acid respectively. In PIH cystatin C was significantly higher, 1.25 ± 0.9 unlike creatinine, 0.67 ±0.14 and uric acid, 4.30 ±1.0. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) plots demonstrated that the diagnostic accuracy of serum creatinine was superior to serum uric acid and serum cystatin C and serum uric acid was better than serum cystatin C.Conclusion:The maternal serum cystatin C, creatinine and uric acid were all significantly elevated at the end of pregnancy in pre-eclampsia compared to those of healthy pregnant women. If this rise in the above markers during early pregnancy could predict the onset of PIH/PE, needs to be investigated.

    INFLUENCE OF PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PARAMETERS ON SECONDARY METABOLITE PRODUCTION BY MARINE FUNGI

    Objective: Our study aimed to characterize and optimize the physico-chemical properties which render the high yield of bioactive secondary metabolites from marine fungi and its antibacterial activity against clinical pathogens.Methods: Bioactive secondary metabolites extracted from marine fungi of Nijampatnam mangroves, Guntur district Andhra Pradesh, India. By using different solvent systems, secondary metabolite was screened for antimicrobial activity against clinical pathogen, Optimization of cultural conditions for maximizing the yield of biomass and compared the yield in different broth media and minimum inhibitory concentration of the optimised compound done for both compounds.Results: fungal extracts GAPS-1 and GAPS-2 was affectively extracted in ethyl acetate. Isolated compound showed antibacterial activity highest zone of inhibition against E. coli and least to Pseudomonas. Maximum yield of the compound was achieved in modified potato dextrose broth (PDB) medium containing 20% w/v Potato 2% w/v Dextrose broth containing1% w/v glucose and sucrose,1% w/v beef extract and ammonium chloride and 0.01 % mineral salts(MGSO4 and MNSO4) at 25 °C and 30 °C and pH 7.0 and 8.0 with 144 h of incubation period. The yield was observed maximum in potato dextrose broth compared to czapek dox broth, sabaraud's broth and nutrient broth and minimum inhibitory concentration of the optimized compound ranges from 250 μg for gaps-1 and 300 μg for gaps-2.Conclusion: Secondary metabolite yield maximum in potato dextrose broth and its potential anti-bacterial activity needs further investigation for pharmaceutical applications

    Clino-radiological and functional outcome of intra-articular distal radius fractures treated with volar locking plate system

    Background: No uniform consensus exists to decide type of fixation for unstable distal radius fractures. The objective of the study is to evaluate the patients on regular follow up for radiological & functional status. We evaluated the effectiveness and outcomes of unstable distal radius fractures treated with locking plates.Methods: The study design was prospective observational study. 36 patients with distal radius fractures deemed unsuitable for conservative management underwent ORIF with a volar locking plate. The evaluation methods were clinical examination, DASH score and PRWE score. Patients were followed up from minimum of 2 weeks to 6 months. This data was analysed in MS excel and SPSS software version 19.0 for testing the association between different variables by using the chi-square tests.Results: The mean age of patients was 45 years with male preponderance. As per DASH score 17 patients had zero score implying no disability. In the remaining 19 patients score ranged from 4 to 24 with a mean of 11 indicating good outcome. PRWE score was best in 17 patients and worst in zero patients.Conclusions: The fixation of unstable distal radius fractures with volarly applied locking plates without bone grafting and prolonged immobilisation is an effective method & hence has gained worldwide acceptance and is highly recommended

    Vascular malformations: a hospital based study

    Background: Vascular anomalies comprise a widely heterogeneous group of lesions. Diagnosis and management of these lesions present challenges to the surgeons, radiologists and histopathologists. Accurate classification of these lesions results in appropriate therapy. Aim of the study is to study the role of histopathology and histochemical stain in the diagnosis of vascular malformationMethods: The present study is a hospital based observational study on vascular malformations over a period of three years from 2016 to 2018 done in department of Pathology and Plastic Surgery at tertiary care centre, Visakhapatnam.Results: Out of 107 specimens of vascular anomalies received, 72 cases were vascular neoplasms, 35 were vascular malformations. Majority of the vascular malformations were seen in the cervicofacial region (43%) followed by extremities (37.1%). Most common malformation in the present study was arterio venous malformations (60%) followed by venous malformations (22.8%). Verhoeff’s VanGieson stain demonstrated discontinuity of internal elastic lamina in cases of arteriovenous malformation and helped in differentiating the lesions from capillary malformation and vascular tumors.Conclusions: Histopathology, special histochemical stains along with imaging features can be used to reduce diagnostic difficulties and in helping proper management of vascular malformations

    ABSTRACT This paper presents the static pressure development and the effect of struts on the performance of an annular diffuser. A typical exhaust diffuser of an industrial gas turbine is annular with structural members, called struts, which extend radially from the inner to the outer annulus wall. An annular diffuser model, primarily intended for fundamental research, has been tested on a wind tunnel. Similar conditions that prevail in an industrial gas turbine have been generated in the diffuser. Measurements were made using a five holed Pitot probe. The research had been carried out to make a detailed investigation on the effect of struts and to advance computational and design tools for gas turbine exhaust diffusers

    Preclinical toxicological evaluation of Aloe vera health drinks in wistar rats

    Human consumption of Aloe vera as a beverage has recently increased in popularity. These benefits are controversial with some sources pointing out that the putative effects of aloe are unsupported by clinical studies; it is important that marketed products be tested for toxicities following oral consumption. Hence this study was designed to evaluate the toxicological effect of marketed aloe health drinks. Thirty either sex Wistar rats (200-300gm) were enrolled in this study and are divided into 5 groups. Group I receives Normal saline serves as vehicle control, Group II and III receives Product A- Low dose (0.5 ml twice daily, p.o) and High dose (1.0 ml twice daily, p.o) respectively. Group IV and V receives Product B- Low dose (0.5 ml twice daily, p.o) and High dose (1.0 ml twice daily, p.o) respectively. Weekly body weight and daily feed intake were measured. On 28th day total urine output volume, faecal consistency, Haematological, biochemical, and organ weight were measured to assess the toxicity of aloe health drinks. The result of this study shows that continuous usage of aloe health drinks showed milder weight reduction, significant improvement in erythropoiesis also it increases the WBC count and increases the weight of spleen it may confirm the immune modulatory effect of aloe health drink. At the higher doses, it increased the SGOT, SGPT, serum urea and creatinine it may lead to the hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. In gastrointestinal tract on prolonged uses, it produced few lesions and diarrhoea. It might be concluded that prolonged consumption of unprocessed aloe health drink contains latex, an ingredient which has many health risks associated with it. So it can aggravate health problems
