    Ambient air pollution and adverse birth outcomes: a natural experiment study

    Background Radical regulations to improve air quality, including traffic control, were implemented prior to and during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Consequently, ambient concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) and particular matter 10 micrometers or less (PM 10 ), were reduced in a distinct and short window of time, which presented a natural experiment for testing the relationships between maternal exposure to PM 10 and NO 2 during pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes. Methods We estimated the effect of PM 10 and NO 2 exposure during each trimester of gestation on the risk of preterm birth among live births and the birth weight among term babies. The data were based on 50,874 live births delivered between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2010 at the Beijing Haidian Maternal and Child Health Hospital. Air monitoring data for the same period were obtained from the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center. Results Among full-term births, maternal exposure to NO 2 in the third trimester predicted birth weight, with each 10-unit increment (per 10 ug/m 3 ) in NO 2 concentration associated with a 13.78 g (95 % confidence interval: −21.12, −6.43; p \u3c 0.0001) reduction in birth weight. This association was maintained after adjusting for other pollutants, including carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), and PM 10 . No relationship was found between the concentration of PM 10 and low birth weight among full-term births. Neither PM 10 nor NO 2 concentrations predicted the risk of premature birth. Conclusions Exposure to ambient air pollution during certain periods of pregnancy may decrease birth weight, but the effect size is small

    IDENTIFICATION AND QUANTIFICATION OF PINE NEEDLE ESSENTIAL OIL FROM DIFFERENT HABITATS AND SPECIES OF CHINA BY GC-MS AND GC METHOD

    Background: Fresh pine needles, which evergreen, renewable and can be collected at any time, have abundant essential oil. The pine needle essential oil possess various biological activities, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective properties etc., and can be widely used as medicine or medical raw materials, fragrances etc. So in order to make full use of pine needle plant resources, especially essential oil, the identification and quantification of essential oil were investigated. Materials and Methods: GC-MS was used to identified compounds in pine needle essential oil of Pinus massoniana Lamb. from Zhejiang, and GC method was developed for determining 5 compounds (namely α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, bornyl acetate, β-caryophyllene) in pine needle essential oil from different habitats of Pinus massoniana Lamb. and different species (Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc., Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica Litv., Abies holophylla Maxim.). Hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) was used to evaluate homogeneity of pine needles in China. Results: 42 compounds(monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes) were identified by GC-MS, which accounted for 99.62% of total essential oil, particularly contained α-and β-pinene (45.23%). Quantification results showed content of bornyl acetate were the lowest, while content of α-pinene, β-pinene were all high except Sichuan, among them α-pinene were higher than β-pinene except for Shandong and Jiangsu, and total content of essential oil in Guangxi is the highest, Jiangsu was the lowest within Pinus massoniana from different habitats. Within pine needle from different species, the highest total content was Pinus koraiensis, the lowest was Pinus sylvestris, Interestingly, the highest content of bornyl acetate was Abies holophylla. By HCA, samples were sorted into two clusters, Abies holophylla and the other, that is Abies holophylla is different from Pinus massoniana, Pinus koraiensis and Pinus sylvestris. Pinus massoniana from Sichuan is different from other Pinus, in which limonene was the highest in all samples. Conclusions: Compounds of pine needle essential oil vary greatly between genus, while smaller between species, so composition differences among pine needle essential oil was related with genus and species. Abies holophylla is different from other pinus species, and Pinus massoniana from Sichuan is different from other habitats. Pine needle essential oil contains abundant α-and β-pinene, which can be used as an alternative raw materials source of pinene. And Abies holophylla and Pinus massoniana from Sichuan can become bornyl acetate and limonene alternative source of raw materials

    Role of MMP-2(-1306 C/T) and TIMP-2(-418G/C) Polymorphism in Chinese Han Patients with Acne Vulgaris

    Acne is the most common chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Multiple factors, such as hormonal, environmental, immunological, and genetic factors, are thought to be involved in acne. However, genetic studies have yet to elucidate the full mechanism of acne. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of MMP-2 (-1306C/T) and TIMP-2 (-418G/C) polymorphisms with the risk of acne vulgaris in a Chinese Han population. We also analyzed the correlation of clinical parameters and family history in patients with acne vulgaris. This study included 251 acne patients and 121 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood, and genotyping was performed by PCR and DNA sequencing techniques. There is a significant correlation between the MMP-2 (-1306C/T) polymorphism and the acne vulgaris (P<0.001). Although no association was found between the TIMP-2 (-418G/C) polymorphism and the acne vulgaris, patients with the MMP-2 CT/TIMP-2 GG or GC allele are at higher risk of acne vulgaris. There is also a significant difference in the severity of the disease between acne vulgaris patients with and without family history (P<0.001). This study indicated that the MMP-2 (-1306C/T) polymorphism, in combination with the TIMP-2 (-418G/C) polymorphism, contributes to acne vulgaris susceptibility in the Chinese Han population

    MMP-9 Knockdown Inhibits Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Lymph Node Metastasis in the Nude Mouse Tongue-Xenografted Model through the RhoC/Src Pathway

    Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most common types of cancers in developing countries. A major contributor to the high mortality rate of OSCC is the tendency of oral cancer cells to metastasize to lymph nodes around the head and neck during the early stages of cancer development. Matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), an endopeptidase, can degrade the extracellular matrix and basement membrane and plays a key role in tumor invasion and metastasis. In vitro, cell migration ability was conducted by scratching assays. We also investigated the interaction abilities between OSCC cells and vascular endothelial cells (ECs) by an adhesion assay and transendothelial migration assay. And we established a BALB/c nude mouse tongue-xenografted metastasis model to investigate the role of MMP-9 and explore its potential underlying mechanism in OSCC growth, lymph node metastasis, and angiogenesis in vivo. The results showed that knockdown of MMP-9 could significantly suppress OSCC cell migration, proliferation, interactions between endothelial cells, xenografted tumor growth, and angiogenesis and simultaneously markedly inhibited OSCC cell metastasis to mouse lymphonodi cervicales superficiales, axillary lymph nodes, and even distant inguinal lymph nodes. Mechanistic studies revealed that knockdown of MMP-9 also led to a decreased expression of RhoC, Src, and F-actin by RT-PCR, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry. And the bioinformatic analysis showed that MMP-9, RhoC, and Src mRNA expression was positively and linearly correlated in OSCC on TCGA database. Together, our findings indicated that MMP-9 plays a very important role in OSCC growth, migration, angiogenesis, and lymph node metastasis, and its potential mechanism may be mediated by RhoC and Src gene expression

    Mental health problems and social media exposure during COVID-19 outbreak.

    Huge citizens expose to social media during a novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbroke in Wuhan, China. We assess the prevalence of mental health problems and examine their association with social media exposure. A cross-sectional study among Chinese citizens aged≥18 years old was conducted during Jan 31 to Feb 2, 2020. Online survey was used to do rapid assessment. Total of 4872 participants from 31 provinces and autonomous regions were involved in the current study. Besides demographics and social media exposure (SME), depression was assessed by The Chinese version of WHO-Five Well-Being Index (WHO-5) and anxiety was assessed by Chinese version of generalized anxiety disorder scale (GAD-7). multivariable logistic regressions were used to identify associations between social media exposure with mental health problems after controlling for covariates. The prevalence of depression, anxiety and combination of depression and anxiety (CDA) was 48.3% (95%CI: 46.9%-49.7%), 22.6% (95%CI: 21.4%-23.8%) and 19.4% (95%CI: 18.3%-20.6%) during COVID-19 outbroke in Wuhan, China. More than 80% (95%CI:80.9%-83.1%) of participants reported frequently exposed to social media. After controlling for covariates, frequently SME was positively associated with high odds of anxiety (OR = 1.72, 95%CI: 1.31-2.26) and CDA (OR = 1.91, 95%CI: 1.52-2.41) compared with less SME. Our findings show there are high prevalence of mental health problems, which positively associated with frequently SME during the COVID-19 outbreak. These findings implicated the government need pay more attention to mental health problems, especially depression and anxiety among general population and combating with "infodemic" while combating during public health emergency

    Pelvic Floor Muscle Strength in the First Trimester of Primipara: A Cross-Sectional Study

    Background: Pelvic floor muscle (PFM) weakness is associated with stress urinary incontinence. Pregnancy is an important risk factor for PFM weakness. Studies evaluating PFM strength in the first trimester of pregnancy are still lacking. Our study aimed to describe pelvic floor function of the primipara in the first trimester of gestation and investigate the risk factors for PFM weakness. Methods: Primiparas aged 20~40 years with a singleton pregnancy less than 14 weeks of gestation were recruited, and data were collected via questionnaires on items that were suggested as associated with PFM weakness, followed by Modified Oxford Scale (MOS) on genital hiatus and perineal body and pelvic floor ultrasound evaluation for the thickness of the left and right levator ani muscles (LAM), right&ndash;left diameter of the levator hiatus (LH), and LH area. Participants were divided into three groups by MOS &gt;3, =3, and &lt;3 for data analysis. Results: A total of 380 participants completed the questionnaires and examinational analysis, of whom, 228, 98, and 54 were divided into Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3, respectively. The three groups were significantly different in the number of gestations and abortions, toilet types, and the right&ndash;left diameter of the LH (p &lt; 0.05). Logistic regressive analysis showed that squatting toilet dominant (OR = 3.025; 95% CI: 1.623~5.638; p &lt; 0.001) and a larger right&ndash;left diameter of the LH (OR = 1.065; 95% CI: 1.026~1.105; p = 0.001) were significantly associated with PFM weakness. Conclusions: Squatting toilet dominancy and longer right&ndash;left diameter of the LH are significantly associated with PFM weakness in primiparas in the first trimester. Sitting toilets should be recommended to women, especially pregnant women. Trial registration: The trial has been registered at Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (registration number: ChiCTR2000029618)
