Two-Dimensional Dirac Fermions Protected by Space-Time Inversion Symmetry in Black Phosphorus
We report the realization of novel symmetry-protected Dirac fermions in a
surface-doped two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor, black phosphorus. The widely
tunable band gap of black phosphorus by the surface Stark effect is employed to
achieve a surprisingly large band inversion up to ~0.6 eV. High-resolution
angle-resolved photoemission spectra directly reveal the pair creation of Dirac
points and their moving along the axis of the glide-mirror symmetry. Unlike
graphene, the Dirac point of black phosphorus is stable, as protected by
spacetime inversion symmetry, even in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Our
results establish black phosphorus in the inverted regime as a simple model
system of 2D symmetry-protected (topological) Dirac semimetals, offering an
unprecedented opportunity for the discovery of 2D Weyl semimetals
The EPOCH Project: I. Periodic variable stars in the EROS-2 LMC database
The EPOCH (EROS-2 periodic variable star classification using machine
learning) project aims to detect periodic variable stars in the EROS-2 light
curve database. In this paper, we present the first result of the
classification of periodic variable stars in the EROS-2 LMC database. To
classify these variables, we first built a training set by compiling known
variables in the Large Magellanic Cloud area from the OGLE and MACHO surveys.
We crossmatched these variables with the EROS-2 sources and extracted 22
variability features from 28 392 light curves of the corresponding EROS-2
sources. We then used the random forest method to classify the EROS-2 sources
in the training set. We designed the model to separate not only Scuti
stars, RR Lyraes, Cepheids, eclipsing binaries, and long-period variables, the
superclasses, but also their subclasses, such as RRab, RRc, RRd, and RRe for RR
Lyraes, and similarly for the other variable types. The model trained using
only the superclasses shows 99% recall and precision, while the model trained
on all subclasses shows 87% recall and precision. We applied the trained model
to the entire EROS-2 LMC database, which contains about 29 million sources, and
found 117 234 periodic variable candidates. Out of these 117 234 periodic
variables, 55 285 have not been discovered by either OGLE or MACHO variability
studies. This set comprises 1 906 Scuti stars, 6 607 RR Lyraes, 638
Cepheids, 178 Type II Cepheids, 34 562 eclipsing binaries, and 11 394
long-period variables. A catalog of these EROS-2 LMC periodic variable stars

Tensile property improvement of TWIP-cored three-layer steel sheets fabricated by hot-roll-bonding with low-carbon steel or interstitial-free steel
TWIP-cored three-layer steel sheets were newly fabricated by hot rolling of TWIP steel sheet surrounded by low-carbon (LC) or interstitial-free (IF) steel sheets. TWIP/LC or TWIP/IF interfaces were well bonded without pores or voids, while a few pearlites were thinly formed along the interfaces. The strengths and elongation of the TWIP-cored sheets increased as the volume fraction of TWIP-cored region increased, and were also well matched with the ones calculated by a rule of mixtures based on volume fraction or force fraction. According to digital image correlation and electron back-scatter diffraction analyses, very high strain hardening effect in the initial deformation stage and active twin formation in the interfacial region beneficially affected the overall homogeneous deformation in the TWIP-cored sheets without any yield point phenomenon occurring in the LC sheet and serrations occurring in the TWIP sheet, respectively. These TWIP-cored sheets can cover a wide range of yield strength, tensile strength, and ductility levels, e.g., 320-498 MPa, 545-878 MPa, and 48-54%, respectively, by controlling the volume fraction of TWIP-cored region, and thus present new applications to multi-functional automotive steel sheets requiring excellent properties.1163Ysciescopu
Optimal Multiuser Diversity in Multi-Cell MIMO Uplink Networks: User Scaling Law and Beamforming Design
We introduce a distributed protocol to achieve multiuser diversity in a multicell multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) uplink network, referred to as a MIMO interfering multiple-access channel (IMAC). Assuming both no information exchange among base stations (BS) and local channel state information at the transmitters for the MIMO IMAC, we propose a joint beamforming and user scheduling protocol, and then show that the proposed protocol can achieve the optimal multiuser diversity gain, i.e., KM log (SNR log N), as long as the number of mobile stations (MSs) in a cell, N, scales faster than SNRKM-L/1-epsilon for a small constant epsilon > 0, where M, L, K, and SNR denote the number of receive antennas at each BS, the number of transmit antennas at each MS, the number of cells, and the signal-to-noise ratio, respectively. Our result indicates that multiuser diversity can be achieved in the presence of intra-cell and inter-cell interference even in a distributed fashion. As a result, vital information on how to design distributed algorithms in interference-limited cellular environments is provided
The complete mitochondrial genome of a Dokdo shrimp, Lebbeus groenlandicus
Lebbeus groenlandicus is a shrimp species indigenous to the Dokdo islands in the East Sea of Korea. We report the 17,399 bp mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of the species that consists of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), 2 ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), and a control region (CR). A maximum-likelihood tree, constructed with 18 prawn and 45 shrimp mitogenomes, confirmed that L. groenlandicus occupies the most basal position within the Caridea infra-order and is closely related to Pandalidae shrimps
Incipient piezoelectrics and electrostriction behavior in Sn-doped Bi-1/2( Na0.82K0.18)(1/2) TiO3 lead-free ceramics
Dielectric, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and strain properties of lead-free Sn-doped Bi-1/2(Na0.82K0.18)(1/2)TiO3 (BNKT) were investigated. A crossover from a nonergodic relaxor to an ergodic relaxor state at room temperature, accompanied by a giant electric-field-induced strain, was observed at 5 at. % Sn doping. Switching dynamics monitored during a bipolar poling cycle manifested that the observed giant strain originates from incipient piezoelectricity. When Sn doping level reached 8 at. %, BNKT exhibited an electrostrictive behavior with a highly temperature-insensitive electrostrictive coefficient of Q(11) = 0.023 m(4)open3
Association between work-related health problems and job insecurity in permanent and temporary employees
OBJECTIVES: This research was conducted with an aim of determining the correlation between job insecurity and an employee’s work-related health problems among permanent and temporary workers. METHODS: Using the data from the First Korean Working Conditions Survey conducted in 2006, a total of 7,071 workers, excluding employers and the self-employed, were analyzed. Work-related health problems were categorized as backache, headache, abdominal pain, muscular pain, stress, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety or depression. Each problem was then analyzed for its relationship to job insecurity through logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Among the 7,071 workers, 5,294 (74.9%) were permanent workers and 1,777 (25.1%) were temporary workers. For the permanent workers, presence of high or moderate job insecurity appeared more closely linked to backache, headache, abdominal pain, muscular pain, stress, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, and depression compared to absence of job insecurity. However, for the temporary workers, only depression appeared to be associated with the presence of high job insecurity. CONCLUSION: The study showed that the presence of job insecurity is correlated with work-related health problems. The deleterious effects of job insecurity appeared to be stronger in permanent than temporary workers. Additional research should investigate ways to effectively reduce job insecurity
