    Shuttle-effect-free sodium–sulfur batteries derived from a Tröger's base polymer of intrinsic microporosity

    Room-temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries have recently gained attention as next-generation energy storage devices owing to their low cost, the abundance of sodium, and the high theoretical capacity of sulfur. However, the notorious shuttle effect, caused by the dissolution of intermediate polysulfides during cycling, limits the long-term performance of Na-S batteries. In this study, intrinsically microporous Tro center dot ger's base based polymer (PIM-EA-TB)-based carbon-sulfur composites are prepared for shuttle-effect-free RT Na-S batteries by utilizing the combination of physical confinement and covalent bonding in a single material. The composites demonstrate excellent electrochemical performance, including a negligible capacity fading over 350 cycles and a high coulombic efficiency of approximately greater than 99%.

    Elimination of Chrysanthemum stunt viroid (CSVd) from Meristem Tip Culture Combined with Prolonged Cold Treatment

    Chrysanthemum production in Korea has recently been greatly affected by the spread of Chrysanthemum stunt viroid (CSVd) infection, necessitating the use of CSVd-free stocks to ensure successful chrysanthemum cultivation. We investigated the effects of low temperature (4°C), antiviral chemicals (ribavirin and amantadine) and a combination of these treatments on CSVd elimination by meristem tip cultures using plantlets that originated from CSVd-infected chrysanthemum ‘Ency’. Neither antiviral agents led to CSVd elimination, despite the suppression of meristem tip growth in a concentration dependent manner. However, the CSVd elimination rate increased up to 42.8% when meristem tips were excised after storage at 4°C for two months. The most effective results were obtained from a combination of low temperature for three months at 4°C followed by meristem tip culture on media containing 50 and 100 mgL-1 ribavirin. These results suggest that antiviral agents can also be useful for CSVd elimination if their treatment is combined with prolonged periods of low temperature. This is the first report of eradication of viroids from spray type chrysanthemum bred in Korea

    As the increase of chrysanthemum demand on chrysanthemum increases in Korea, the production of high quality chrysanthemum is needed. Chrysanthemum stunt viroid (CSVd) is one of the important viroid, which infects chrysanthemum and induces diseases that affects the decrease of quality and yield. To solve this problem, we used different size of meristem of chrysanthemum ‘Ency’ for shoot tip culture and also that of combined with heat treatment at 37οC. The efficiency of CSVd elimination was influenced by the size of shoot tip. The small-sized of meristems with 1 or 2 leaf primodia were regenerated into the highest number of CSVd-free plantlets. By RT-PCR, the 214-bp band corresponding to CSVd was not detected in 22.2% of the total number of tested regenerants from shoot tips with 2 leaf primordia. While, shoot tip culture combined with heat treatment of one-month-old in vitro shoots was not effective for CSVd-elimination. The CSVd-free plants grew more vigorously than CSVd-infected plants in the greenhouse

    Background Parenchymal Enhancement of the Contralateral Normal Breast: Association with Tumor Response in Breast Cancer Patients Receiving Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy

    AbstractPURPOSE: This study investigated the association between background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) and pathologic response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). METHODS: A total of 46 patients diagnosed with invasive breast cancer were analyzed. Each patient had three magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, one pre-treatment and two follow-up (F/U) MRI studies. BPE was measured as the averaged enhancement of the whole fibroglandular tissues. The pre-treatment BPE and the changes in the F/U MRI were compared between patients achieving pathologic complete response (pCR) versus those not. Subgroup analyses based on age, estrogen receptor (ER), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) status of their cancers were also performed. RESULTS: The pre-treatment BPE was higher in the pCR group than that in the non-pCR group. Compared to baseline, BPE at F/U-1 was significantly decreased in the pCR group but not in the non-pCR group. In subgroup analysis based on age, these results were seen only in the younger group (<55 years old), not in the older group (≥55 years old). Older patients had a significantly lower pre-treatment BPE than younger patients. In analysis based on molecular biomarkers, a significantly decreased BPE at F/U-1 was only found in the ER-negative pCR group but not in the non-pCR, nor in the ER-positive groups. CONCLUSIONS: A higher pre-treatment BPE showing a significant decrease early after starting NAC was related to pCR in pre/peri-menopausal patients

    Characterization of Pure Ductal Carcinoma In Situ on Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced MR Imaging: Do Nonhigh Grade and High Grade Show Different Imaging Features?

    To characterize imaging features of pure DCIS on dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging (DCE-MRI), 31 consecutive patients (37-81 years old, mean 56), including 2 Grade I, 16 Grade II, and 13 Grade III, were studied. MR images were reviewed retrospectively and the morphological appearances and kinetic features of breast lesions were categorized according to the ACR BI-RADS breast MRI lexicon. DCE-MRI was a sensitive imaging modality in detecting pure DCIS. MR imaging showed enhancing lesions in 29/31 (94%) cases. Pure DCIS appeared as mass type or non-mass lesions on MRI with nearly equal frequency. The 29 MR detected lesions include 15 mass lesions (52%), and 14 lesions showing non-mass-like lesions (48%). For the mass lesions, the most frequent presentations were irregular shape (50%), irregular margin (50%) and heterogeneous enhancement (67%). For the non-mass-like lesions, the clumped internal enhancement pattern was the dominate feature, seen in 9/14 cases (64%). Regarding enhancement kinetic curve, 21/29 (78%) lesions showed suspicious malignant type kinetics. No significant difference was found in morphology (P > .05), tumor size (P = 0.21), and kinetic characteristics (P = .38) between non-high grade (I+II) and high-grade (III) pure DCIS

    Homeobox gene Dlx-2 is implicated in metabolic stress-induced necrosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In contrast to tumor-suppressive apoptosis and autophagic cell death, necrosis promotes tumor progression by releasing the pro-inflammatory and tumor-promoting cytokine high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), and its presence in tumor patients is associated with poor prognosis. Thus, necrosis has important clinical implications in tumor development; however, its molecular mechanism remains poorly understood.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the present study, we show that Distal-less 2 (Dlx-2), a homeobox gene of the Dlx family that is involved in embryonic development, is induced in cancer cell lines dependently of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in response to glucose deprivation (GD), one of the metabolic stresses occurring in solid tumors. Increased Dlx-2 expression was also detected in the inner regions, which experience metabolic stress, of human tumors and of a multicellular tumor spheroid, an <it>in vitro </it>model of solid tumors. Dlx-2 short hairpin RNA (shRNA) inhibited metabolic stress-induced increase in propidium iodide-positive cell population and HMGB1 and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, indicating the important role(s) of Dlx-2 in metabolic stress-induced necrosis. Dlx-2 shRNA appeared to exert its anti-necrotic effects by preventing metabolic stress-induced increases in mitochondrial ROS, which are responsible for triggering necrosis.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results suggest that Dlx-2 may be involved in tumor progression via the regulation of metabolic stress-induced necrosis.</p
