    Motion-reversal in colloidal walkers

In response to an external magnetic field, the dipoles drive the beads to self-assemble into chains, which rotate and consequently move across a nearby surface. Under strong surface-interaction, the dynamic and equilibrium structures are modeled using a Bell model and measured using Monte Carlo-type update steps. It is shown that the walking motion can be characterized as two different regimes corresponding to an increase of the rotating arm from half to all of the chain-length as the activation barrier of binding interaction increases with a constant overall increase in energy. When operating at rotational frequencies from 1 Hz to 9 Hz and applied field from I mT to 9 mT, the corresponding translational velocities of chain-like rotors can be approximated with a two-state model until the fragmentation transition of chain-like rotors takes place.     Soft X-ray resonant scattering study of single-crystal LaSr2_2Mn2_2O7_7

    Soft X-ray resonant scattering studies at the Mn LII, IIIL_{\texttt{II, III}}- and the La MIV, VM_{\texttt{IV, V}}- edges of single-crystal LaSr2_2Mn2_2O7_7 are reported. At low temperatures, below TN160T_\texttt{N} \approx 160 K, energy scans with a fixed momentum transfer at the \emph{A}-type antiferromagnetic (0 0 1) reflection around the Mn LII, IIIL_{\texttt{II, III}}-edges with incident linear σ\sigma and π\pi polarizations show strong resonant enhancements. The splitting of the energy spectra around the Mn LII, IIIL_{\texttt{II, III}}-edges may indicate the presence of a mixed valence state, e.g., Mn3+^{3+}/Mn4+^{4+}. The relative intensities of the resonance and the clear shoulder-feature as well as the strong incident σ\sigma and π\pi polarization dependences strongly indicate its complex electronic origin. Unexpected enhancement of the charge Bragg (0 0 2) reflection at the La MIV, VM_{\texttt{IV, V}}-edges with σ\sigma polarization has been observed up to 300 K, with an anomaly appearing around the orbital-ordering transition temperature, TOO220T_{\texttt{OO}} \approx 220 K, suggesting a strong coupling (competition) between them.Comment: Accepted by European Physical Journal

    Effect of thermomechanical processing defects on fatigue and fracture behaviour of forged magnesium

    The microstructural origins of premature fatigue failures were investigated on a variety of forged components manufactured from AZ80 and ZK60 magnesium, both at the test specimen level and the full-scale component level. Both stress and strain-controlled approaches were used to characterize the macroscopically defect-free forged material behaviour as well as with varying levels of defect intensities. The effect of thermomechanical processing defects due to forging of a industrially relevant full-scale component were characterized and quantified using a variety of techniques. The fracture initiation and early crack growth behaviour was deterministically traced back to a combination of various effects having both geometric and microstructural origins, including poor fusion during forging, entrainment of contaminants sub-surface, as well as other inhomogeneities in the thermomechanical processing history.             At the test specimen level, the fracture behaviour under both stress and strain controlled uniaxial loading was characterized for forged AZ80 Mg and a structure-property relationship was developed. The fracture surface morphology was quantitatively assessed revealing key features which characterize the presence and severity of intrinsic forging defects.  A significant degradation in fatigue performance was observed as a result of forging defects accelerating fracture initiation and early crack growth, up to 6 times reduction in life (relative to the defect free material) under constant amplitude fully reversed fatigue loading.             At the full-scale component level, the fatigue and fracture behaviour under combined structural loading was also characterized for a number of ZK60 forged components with varying levels of intrinsic thermomechanical processing defects. A novel in-situ non-contact approach (utilizing Digital-Image Correlation) was used as a screening test to establish the presence of these intrinsic defects and reliably predict their effect on the final fracture behaviour in an accelerated manner compared to conventional methods

    Exclusion Statistics of Quasiparticles in Condensed States of Composite Fermion Excitations

    The exclusion statistics of quasiparticles is found at any level of the hierarchy of condensed states of composite fermion excitations (for which experimental indications have recently been found). The hierarchy of condensed states of excitations in boson Jain states is introduced and the statistics of quasiparticles is found. The quantum Hall states of charged α\alpha-anyons (α\alpha -- the exclusion statistics parameter) can be described as incompressible states of (α+2p)(\alpha+2p)-anyons (2p2p -- an even number).Comment: 4 page

    No Association Between Screening for Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Reduced Cancer-Related Mortality in Patients With Cirrhosis

    Background & Aims: Screening patients with cirrhosis for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been recommended. We conducted a matched case–control study within the US Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system to determine whether screening by abdominal ultrasonography (USS) and/or by measuring serum level of α-fetoprotein (AFP) was associated with decreased cancer-related mortality in patients with cirrhosis. Methods: We defined cases (n = 238) as patients with cirrhosis who died of HCC from January 1, 2013 through August 31, 2015 and had been in VA care with a diagnosis of cirrhosis for at least 4 years before the diagnosis of HCC. We matched each case to 1 control (n = 238), defined as a patient with cirrhosis who did not die of HCC and had been in VA care for at least 4 years before the date of the matched case's HCC diagnosis. Controls were matched to cases by year of cirrhosis diagnosis, race and ethnicity, age, sex, etiology of cirrhosis, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score, and VA medical center. We identified all USS and serum AFP tests performed within 4 years before the date of HCC diagnosis in cases or the equivalent index date in controls and determined by chart extraction (blinded to case or control status) whether these tests were performed for screening. Results: There were no significant differences between cases and controls in the proportions of patients who underwent screening USS (52.9% vs 54.2%), screening measurement of serum AFP (74.8% vs 73.5%), screening USS or measurement of serum AFP (81.1% vs 79.4%), or screening USS and measurement of serum AFP (46.6% vs 48.3%) within 4 years before the index date, with or without adjusting for potential confounders. There also was no difference in receipt of these screening tests within 1, 2, or 3 years before the index date. Conclusions: In a matched case–control study of the VA health care system, we found that screening patients with cirrhosis for HCC by USS, measurement of serum AFP, either test, or both tests was not associated with decreased HCC-related mortality. We encourage additional case–control studies to evaluate the efficacy of screening for HCC in other health care systems, in which available records are sufficiently detailed to enable identification of the indication for USS and AFP tests

    Observations and models of solar prominences are reviewed. We focus on non-eruptive prominences, and describe recent progress in four areas of prominence research: (1) magnetic structure deduced from observations and models, (2) the dynamics of prominence plasmas (formation and flows), (3) Magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) waves in prominences and (4) the formation and large-scale patterns of the filament channels in which prominences are located.
