Units, polyhedra, and a conjecture of Satake
Let F/\QQ be a totally real number field of degree . We explicitly
evaluate a certain sum of rational functions over a infinite fan of
-rational polyhedral cones in terms of the norm map \Norm \colon F\to \QQ
. This completes Sczech's combinatorial proof of Satake's conjecture
connecting the special values of -series associated to cusp singularities

Mrk 1014: An AGN Dominated ULIRG at X-rays
In this paper we report on an XMM-Newton observation of the ultraluminous
infrared QSO Mrk 1014. The X-ray observation reveals a power-law dominated
(photon index of about 2.2) spectrum with a slight excess in the soft energy
range. AGN and starburst emission models fit the soft excess emission equally
well, however, the most plausible explanation is an AGN component as the
starburst model parameter, temperature and luminosity, appear physically
unrealistic. The mean luminosity of Mrk 1014 is about 2 times 10^44 erg s^-1.
We have also observed excess emission at energies greater than 5 keV. This
feature could be attributed to a broadened and redshifted iron complex, but
deeper observations are required to constrain its origin. The light curve shows
small scale variability over the 11 ks observation. There is no evidence of
intrinsic absorption in Mrk 1014. The X-ray observations support the notion of
an AGN dominated central engine. We establish the need for a longer observation

Aesthetic feelings in scientific reasoning
Scientists regularly invoke broadly aesthetic properties like elegance and simplicity when evaluating theories, but why should we expect aesthetic pleasure to signal an epistemic good? I argue that aesthetic judgements in science are best understood as a special case of affective cognition, and that the feelings on which these judgements are based are the upshots of metacognitive monitoring of the quality of our engagement with theory and evidence. Finding a theory beautiful fallibly signals that it fits well with our background knowledge and that it’s neither artificially adjusted to accommodate otherwise disconfirming evidence nor fitted to noise in the data, which makes aesthetic pleasure a good heuristic for theory evaluation
Interpersonal Power: A Review, Critique, and Research Agenda
Power is a fundamental force in social relationships and is pervasive throughout various types of
interactions. Although research has shown that the possession of power can change the
powerholder, the full extent of power's consequences on individuals' decision making
capabilities and social interactions within organizations is not fully understood. The goal of this
paper is to review, synthesize, and critique the literature on power with a focus on its
organizational and managerial implications. Specifically, we propose a definition of power that
takes into account its three defining characteristics-having the discretion and means to enforce
one's will-and summarize the extant literature on how power influences individuals' thoughts,
emotions, and actions both in terms of prosocial and antisocial outcomes. In addition, we
highlight important moderators of power and describe ways in which it can be studied in a more
rigorous manner by examining methodological issues and pitfalls with regard to its measurement
and manipulation. We also provide future research directions to motivate and guide the study of
power by management scholars. Our desire is to present a thorough and parsimonious account of
power's influence on individuals within an organizational context, as well as provide a
foundation that scholars can build upon as they continue to make consequential contributions to
the study of power
Self-recording portable soil penetrometer
A lightweight portable penetrometer for testing soil characteristics is described. The penetrometer is composed of a handle, data recording, and probe components detachably joined together. The data recording component has an easily removed recording drum which rotates according to the downward force applied on the handle, and a stylus means for marking the drum along its height according to the penetration depth of probe into the soil
NGC6240: extended CO structures and their association with shocked gas
We present deep CO observations of NGC6240 performed with the IRAM Plateau de
Bure Interferometer (PdBI). NGC6240 is the prototypical example of a major
galaxy merger in progress, caught at an early stage, with an extended,
strongly-disturbed butterfly-like morphology and the presence of a heavily
obscured active nucleus in the core of each progenitor galaxy. The CO line
shows a skewed profile with very broad and asymmetric wings detected out to
velocities of -600 km/s and +800 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity.
The PdBI maps reveal the existence of two prominent structures of blueshifted
CO emission. One extends eastward, i.e. approximately perpendicular to the line
connecting the galactic nuclei, over scales of ~7 kpc and shows velocities up
to -400 km/s. The other extends southwestward out to ~7 kpc from the nuclear
region, and has a velocity of -100 km/s with respect to the systemic one.
Interestingly, redshifted emission with velocities 400 to 800 km/s is detected
around the two nuclei, extending in the east-west direction, and partly
overlapping with the eastern blue-shifted structure, although tracing a more
compact region of size ~1.7 kpc. The overlap between the southwestern CO blob
and the dust lanes seen in HST images, which are interpreted as tidal tails,
indicates that the molecular gas is deeply affected by galaxy interactions. The
eastern blueshifted CO emission is co-spatial with an Halpha filament that is
associated with strong H2 and soft X-ray emission. The analysis of Chandra
X-ray data provides strong evidence for shocked gas at the position of the
Halpha emission. Its association with outflowing molecular gas supports a
scenario where the molecular gas is compressed into a shock wave that
propagates eastward from the nuclei. If this is an outflow, the AGN are likely

Mid-Infrared line diagnostics of Active Galaxies -- A spectroscopic AGN survey with ISO-SWS
We present medium resolution (R approx. 1500) ISO-SWS 2.4--45 micron spectra
of a sample of 29 galaxies with active nuclei. This data set is rich in fine
structure emission lines tracing the narrow line regions and (circum-)nuclear
star formation regions, and it provides a coherent spectroscopic reference for
future extragalactic studies in the mid-infrared. We use the data set to
briefly discuss the physical conditions in the narrow line regions (density,
temperature, excitation, line profiles) and to test for possible differences
between AGN sub-types. Our main focus is on new tools for determining the
propertibes of dusty galaxies and on the AGN-starburst connection. We present
mid-IR line ratio diagrams which can be used to identify composite (starburst +
AGN) sources and to distinguish between emission excited by active nuclei and
emission from (circum-nuclear) star forming regions. For instance, line ratios
of high to low excitation lines like [O IV]25.9um/[Ne II]12.8um, that have been
used to probe for AGNs in dusty objects, can be examined in more detail and
with better statistics now. In addition, we present two-dimensional diagnostic
diagrams that are fully analogous to classical optical diagnostic diagrams, but
better suited for objects with high extinction. Finally, we discuss
correlations of mid-infrared line fluxes to the mid- and far-infrared
continuum. We compare these relations to similar relations in starburst
galaxies in order to examine the contribution of AGNs to the bolometric
luminosities of their host galaxies. The spectra are available in electronic
