Retiring to Cyberspace: Factors Influencing Older Adults\u27 Ownership of Computer Technology and Internet Usage at the Time of Retirement
Increasingly, computer and Internet usage play a vital role in connecting individuals to the larger society. Many factors may influence computer ownership and frequency of Internet usage by retired older adults. This thesis applies two theoretical frameworks, Cumulative Inequality theory and Intergenerational Solidarity theory, to explore major factors that may influence retired older adults\u27 computer ownership and their frequency of Internet usage. Special attention will be paid to issues of social inequality: including retirement status (respondent and spouse), availability of an employer-paid pension (respondent and spouse), accumulated wealth, income, educational attainment, and employer-paid health insurance (respondent and spouse). In addition, this thesis will explore issues of intergenerational solidarity, specifically, number of children and number of children living in the household in relation to computer ownership and Internet usage, in particular. This study uses the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (WLS) data that were collected through phone surveys that were conducted in 2004
Unlocking the Paradox of Christian Metal Music
In 1984, Stryper released its first album The Yellow and Black Attack and introduced audiences to a different kind of heavy metal. Instead of lyrics about sex, alcohol, and Satan, Stryper sang about Jesus, salvation, and God. While there were a number of fans ready for this change more were not. Members of the Church as well as members of the metal subculture were in agreement that Christianity and heavy metal were incompatible. Despite these objections, however, more bands emerged, and Christian metal became a significant genre within the Christian music industry. These bands presented Christian-oriented lyrics within the full spectrum of metal subgenres.
This dissertation examines the ways in which Christian metal bands create an intersection between Christianity and the heavy metal subculture, infusing Christianity within the textual, visual, and musical structures of heavy metal. The author employs Deena Weinstein’s “metal code” to frame the analysis. The metal code includes the textual elements (band names, album and song titles, and song lyrics); the visual elements (band logos; album covers; and the various elements of the concert experience including the bands’ appearances, the staging, the interactions with the fans, and music videos); and the musical elements (timbre, modality, formal structure, and production of the songs and albums) that set metal apart from other musical genres. The dissertation also examines the concept of bands as “metal missionaries” that immerse themselves within the heavy metal subculture for the purpose of bringing the Christian message of hope and salvation. The author concludes that even though Christian metal bands modify aspects of elements that are otherwise incompatible with their Christian beliefs and message, they still maintain a sense of stylistic integrity that gives them credibility within the heavy metal subculture and allows them to fulfill their mission
Developing Multiplication Fact Fluency
Using specific components of three broad learning theories—cognitive, social-interactional, and behavioral—students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classrooms were given multiplication fact fluency instruction over a period of five weeks for 10-15 minutes each day. Two different approaches were utilized with two distinct groups of students for the purpose of comparing different approaches to fluency development. Results indicate that students using a strategy-based approach for fluency development by means of instructional tasks emphasizing social-interactional and cognitive theories (particularly Bruner’s theory of Modes of Representation) increased multiplication fact fluency, with a greater degree of consistency, than students using a drill-based approach emphasizing behavioristic techniques such as repetition and memorization
An ica algorithm for analyzing multiple data sets
In this paper we derive an independent-component analysis (ICA) method for analyzing two or more data sets simultaneously. Our model permits there to be components individual to the various data sets, and others that are common to all the sets. We explore the assumed time autocorrelation of independent signal components and base our algorithm on prediction analysis. We illustrate the algorithm using a simple image separation example. Our aim is to apply this method to functional brain mapping using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). 1
Targeted Insertion of the mPing Transposable Element
Class II DNA Transposable Elements (TEs) are moved from one location to another in the genome by the action of transposase proteins that bind to repeat sequences at the ends of the elements. Although the location TE insertion is mostly random, the addition of DNA binding domains to the transposase proteins has allowed for targeted insertion of some elements. In this study, the Gal4 binding domain was added to the transposase proteins, ORF1 and TPase, which mobilize the mPing element from rice. The Gal4:TPase construct was capable of increasing the number of mPing insertions into the Gal2 and Gal4 promoter sequences in yeast. While this confirms that mPing insertion preference can be manipulated, the target specificity is relatively low. Thus, the CRISPR/Cas9 system was tested for its ability to generate targeted insertion of mPing. A dCas9:TPase fusion protein had a low transposition rate suggesting that the addition of this large protein disrupts TPase function. Unfortunately, the use of a MS2 binding domain to localize the TPase to the MS2 hairpin containing gRNA failed to produce targeted insertion. Thus, our results suggest that the addition of small DNA binding domain to the N-terminal of TPase is the best strategy for targeted insertion of mPing
A Spatially Robust ICA Algorithm for Multiple fMRI Data Sets
In this paper we derive an independent-component analysis (ICA) method for analyzing two or more data sets simultaneously. Our model extracts independent components common to all data sets and independent data-set-specific components. We use time-delayed autocorrelations to obtain independent signal components and base our algorithm on prediction analysis. We applied this method to functional brain mapping using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The results of our 3-subject analysis demonstrate the robustness of the algorithm to the spatial misalignment intrinsic in multiple-subject fMRI data sets. 1
