From process understanding to process control: application of PAT on the cultivation of Bordetella pertussis for a whole cell vaccine

De kwaliteit van farmaceutische producten wordt geborgd door een op Good Manufacturing Practice gebaseerd kwaliteits systeem, waarbij kwaliteitscontrole van het eindproduct een belangrijke rol vervult. Recentelijk is hierin verandering gekomen en vragen regelgevers bij overheden steeds meer om een kwaliteitssysteem dat al tijdens het proces operationeel is. Voor chemische farmaca wordt dit al steeds meer door de industrie toegepast, maar voor biologische producten blijkt die nog steeds moeilijk. In dit proefschrift wordt een methode beschreven die on line monitoring en kwaliteitscontrole voor een complex biologisch product (een cellulair vaccin) mogelijk maakt. Door te identificeren welke procesparameters invloed hebben op de kritieke eigenschappen van het product, kan een controle systeem worden ingericht dat deze kritische parameters tijdens het proces monitort en beheerst. Hiermee verschuift de kwaliteitscontrole van achteraf naar tijdens het proces. Dit maakt de productie van vaccins flexibeler, goedkoper en bovenal veiliger voor de patient

The Impact of Reader’s Workshop on Reading Engagement

The objective of our research was to identify whether reader’s workshop had an impact in student engagement in reading activities. The research was conducted in two third grade classrooms in a rural public elementary school over the course of four weeks. This study was conducted during our reading block which consisted of 90 minutes daily. We gathered data based on the main components of reader’s workshop. These included a pre- and post-assessment of student reading habits, an observation checklist of reading behaviors, reader’s response rubric, and documentation of reader’s conferencing. The data gathered revealed that student reading habits improved through the use of reader’s workshop. Their comprehension and fluency were enhanced due to implementation of sustained independent reading and conferencing with their teacher on a weekly basis. Based on the results, we will continue to implement reader’s workshop to foster positive reading practices in our classrooms

Wicked Water Systems: A Review of Challenges and Opportunities

The contemporary urban water system is under extreme pressure due to growing demand, climate change, and social inequality. Conventional methods to mitigating extreme water events have proven to be insufficient to safeguard our growing urban centers. Unless the competing demands and pressures of the urban water system are addressed in holistic manners, we will soon lack of access to good-quality water, and extreme water events will increasingly affect our metropoles, with most severe consequences for communities already living in marginal conditions. This chapter takes as point of departure that the future urban waterscape is a wicked problem in which actions taken to mitigate the problems are often inadequate and temporary, even when they are the result of the public debate and shared concern. The current urban water system has reached a critical threshold, but how can innovative urban water design or planning solutions be implemented when there is so much at stake? The chapter will address the urban waterscape, its contemporary challenges and what we can expect in future climate conditions. Furthermore, we will discuss contemporary solutions as well as highlight the sociopolitical, economic, and ecological barriers to their implementation. To illustrate the challenges as well as the range of solutions, we will present the algal blooms in Lake Erie, USA, as a case study. We will end with an elaboration on how to innovate in the case of wicked problems

Jaap Kistemaker en uraniumverrijking in Nederland 1945-1962

De Nederlandse fysicus Jaap Kistemaker slaagde er in 1952 voor de eerste keer in om uranium te verrijken. Dat was het begin van een lange reeks experimenten die er uiteindelijk voor zorgden dat Nederland een sterspeler kon worden op de internationale markt voor verrijkt uranium. De ultracentrifugetechnologie stond aan de wieg van het consortium Urenco, een succesvol samenwerkingsverband tussen Duitsland, Engeland en Nederland. Effect of freshwater washing pretreatment on Sargassum muticum as a feedstock for biogas production

The pretreatment of seaweed by washing in freshwater is often used in seaweed biofuel research studies. However, the effect of washing seaweed prior to anaerobic digestion (AD) does not appear to have been greatly studied.
