    Health and Growth

Inarguably the most important question is about the unequal distribution of income among countries. Development economists have recently turned to health for an answer. This dissertation investigates the e®ect of health on cross-country income. The first essay sheds new light on the impact of AIDS on cross-country income levels. We control for a variety of factors that are potentially related to income as suggested by our empirical model and existing related literature. Using the extended (for human capital) Solow model as our baseline empirical specification, we consider cross-sectional and panel estimation. For the full sample it is shown that AIDS has a negative and significant efect on the level of income in both the cross-sectional, and panel estimations. When we arbitrarily split our full sample into OECD and non-OECD countries, we find that the AIDS coeficient continues to be negative and significant for the non-OECD subsample. The second essay constructs gender-specific human capital inequality measures using the Gini coeffcient. It also considers a new channel through which infant mortality affects economic growth-female human capital inequality. It is inequality in education among women that affects infant mortality and the latter affects economic growth and development. We consider cross-sectional and panel data analysis and use common instruments to correct for endogeneity of infant mortality. Our analysis suggests diverting general education subsidy money directly into the education of the least educated women, especially in less-developed countries

RELIABILITY AND SAFETY RESEARCH OF HOT STANDBY MICROCOMPUTER SIGNALLING SYSTEMS

    Get PDF
In this paper it has been studied the safety of a widespread class of microcomputer systems for real time control, systems with active redundancy (hot standby), composed of two identical units with three modes of each unit - active, safely failed and dangerously failed states. Markov modelling has been used. Safety is estimated by the dangerous failure function and MTBDF. The aim of the study is to prove that the system´s reliability is significantly greater than that of the separate unit while safety does not change sufficiently, which makes the system applicable as a signalling one

How Data Transparency Can Help Higher Ed Institutions Improve Their Planning and Marketing

    Get PDF
Like many IR/Effectiveness offices at smaller institutions, one of the main challenges we face is the size of our staff. The increasing external demands for reporting, transparency, and accountability, as well as the internal shift in culture to be more data-driven, make serving our internal constituents challenging. Having a high price tag, private institutions have experienced the constant pressure to justify their cost. As a result, we have seen the demand for our services to increase exponentially. Bucknell\u27s Office of Institutional Research & Planning has taken various approaches in addressing those pressures and needs. We also demonstrate how data transparency and availability are essential for planning, recruiting and marketing through the eyes of an academic department

Biosorption of Cu (II) onto chemically modified waste mycelium of Aspergillus awamori: Equilibrium, kinetics and modeling studies

    Get PDF
The biosorption potential of chemically modified waste mycelium of industrial xylanase-producing strain Aspergillus awamori for Cu (II) removal from aqueous solutions was evaluated. The influence of pH, contact time and initial Cu (II) concentration on the removal efficiency was evaluated. Maximum biosorption capacity was reached by sodium hydroxide treated waste fungal mycelium at pH 5.0. The Langmuir adsorption equation matched very well the adsorption equilibrium data in the studied conditions. The process kinetic followed the pseudo-firs order model

The starting point for this scientific work is the dance Hexentanz which was enacted by the german expressionist dancer Mary Wigman in 1926. She describes the feeling she had during the performance as a kind of self-revelation. Through certain kinds of body movements and the use of a mask, she achieved a dance-ecstasy, and through that initiated a complete surrender and dissolution of the conscious personality. The connection between her and the theatre reformer Jerzy Grotowski was found through the parallels to his method of self revelation. This scientific analysis on the one hand concerns itself with the connection between the working methods of Mary Wigman and Jerzy Grotowski. The main focus hereby is put on the use of trance and ecstasy – techniques, which have been used by Wigman in her dancing work, as well as which Grotowskis actors used in his Theatre Laboratory. On the other hand it will be documented how Wigman and Grotowski used the mask and to which extent a comparison is possible. When in the process of research a connection between Wigmans teacher, Jaques-Dalcroze, and the mystic Georg Iwanowitsch Gurdjieff emerged, this due to the theoretical parallels to Jerzy Grotowski became the concluding joining link of the topic. The basic characteristic of Gurdjieffs work too was to find methods that would enable people to reach into their real consciousness. A process should be initiated through self-monitoring and self-commemoration to transcende the layers of the own self, which is what Grotowski meant with the term „Verticality“
